Introduction
Language is the identity of a country, as is Indonesian. Language plays an important
role in communication in people's lives. Indonesian society is a bilingual society,
namely a society that uses two or more languages to communicate. Indonesian people
use regional languages to communicate in their respective regions; Indonesian is used
as the national language, and English is used as the international language.
In the modern era of globalization, national boundaries are increasingly blurred by the
ease of communication. People from various parts of the world can communicate
easily without distance limits using electronic media. The use of social media is not
limited by age, from young people to adults; however, the majority of social media
users today are dominated by teenagers from the millennial generation. The habit of
teenagers in Indonesia being bilingual, coupled with technological advances in
communication, means the tendency to use foreign languages on social media is also
increasing. Social media users in Indonesia often replace Indonesian vocabulary with
English vocabulary. Research conducted by Adinda Prasty and Hayatul Cholsy (2020)
shows that there are forms of borrowed vocabulary or English language interference on
social media.
What we mean by changes in Indonesian vocabulary is the phenomenon of the
Indonesian language being displaced because it is being replaced by a new language.
The beginning of this change in Indonesian vocabulary was changing Indonesian
words to English according to the theme we raised. This can happen due to cultural
influences, technological developments, or interactions between the two languages.
We will focus on seeing changes in vocabulary that occur on social media. As we
know, we live in a digital era where almost all activities carried out by individuals
themselves use digital systems, and language is one of the most important
components in carrying out activities in the digital world. Individuals can make voice or
video calls and discuss with other people in different cities and even in different
countries using digital devices. This can affect a person's language due to the large
amount of exposure to English on social media, such as English content, English
songs, and even English language films.
We are interested in conducting research related to this topic because we are also
active social media users and are often exposed to English on social media; therefore,
there have been changes in some of the vocabulary we use. So, we wanted to see
whether other social media users experienced changes in vocabulary or even none at
all. We also understand that social media has algorithms, so differences in viewing may
occur.
Data Collection
The criteria for our research respondents are men and women aged 15 to 23 who have
social media and actively use it. Data collection was carried out by distributing online
questionnaires. The total number of participants involved was 36, and all respondents
met the criteria we wanted.
There is a gender imbalance among our respondents, with 29 female respondents and
7 male respondents involved in this research. However, gender imbalance will not
affect the results of this research, and 100% of respondents in this research use social
media. In the context of the age of participation, respondents varied quite widely, with
15 respondents aged 15–17 years, 12 respondents aged 18–20 years, and 9
respondents aged 20–23 years.
To find out whether English can influence changes in Indonesian vocabulary on social
media, we designed targeted steps to reach relevant respondents. First, we developed
a questionnaire tailored to the research objectives.
Next, we implemented a questionnaire distribution approach by utilizing the WhatsApp
application by contacting potential respondents one by one, and we invited potential
respondents to participate in the research by providing access to the link to the
questionnaire. We also utilized school alumni groups to invite group members to
participate in our research. by distributing the questionnaire link.
Result
As with the problem regarding changing Indonesian vocabulary to English, which was
explained in the previous section, the researcher explained the results of the analysis
of the data found.
