WHAT IS A PEST ???
‘Pest’ is defined as insect or other organism that causes any damage to crops,
stored produce, or a nuisance and health hazard to man and his livestock.
The word ‘Pest’ derived from the Latin word ‘Pestis’ meaning Plague. An insect
reaches the status of a pest when its number increases and inflicts significant
damage.
Pest includes insects, nematodes, mites, snails, slugs etc. and vertebrates like rats,
birds etc.
Damage boundary is the lowest level of injury where the damage can be
measured.
WHAT CAUSES PEST OUTBREAK
1) negligible
2) minor and
3) major
time
Economic Injury level (EIL): It is defined as the lowest population density of insect
that will cause economic damage. OR
The critical density of insect population where the loss caused by the pest equals the
cost of control measures.
Economic Threshold Level (ETL) or Action threshold : It is defined as the pest density at
which control measures should be applied to prevent an increasing pest population from
reaching EIL.
HOW TO CALCULATE ECONOMIC INJURY LEVEL?
CATEGORIES OF PESTS
4. Persistent pests: Occurs on the crop throughout the year and is difficult to control
e.g. Chilli thrips, mealy bug on guava
population

GEP lies above EIL always EIL

EIL
Economic damage can be prevented by timely
and
ETL
repeated sprays e.g. Cotton jassid, Rice stem
borer

(iii) Minor pest/Occasional pest
EIL
GEP is below the EIL usually
population
Rarely they cross EIL ETL
Can be controlled
e.g. Cotton stainers, Rice hispa, Ash GE

(iv) Sporadic pests e

GEP generally below EIL
EIL
Sometimes it crosses EIL and cause severe
loss in some places/periods ETL
e.g. Sugarcane pyrilla, White grub, Hairy

(v) Potential pests e
They are not pests at present EIL
GEP always less than EIL population
If environment changed may cause ETL
economic loss
e.g. H. armigera is potential pest on alfalfa
