Tips For Better Storytelling

Many brand stories are ruined by poor
storytelling. It's one thing to have a good
story, it's another thing to be able to
deliver on that story (check previous post
for more context)

1. Know your target audience
You need to understand who you are
telling a story to be able to tailor the story
accordingly
Swipe
For instance, a story written for kids
under age 10 differs from a novel for
adults. Both are interesting to the
different age groups.

In the same way, a brand targeting
Gen Z may use a different story
approach from a brand targeting
baby boomers

2. Have a core message
You need to have a clear "why" behind
your story.
Swipe
3. Create conflict
This may sound counter-intuitive but it is
one of the ways to elicit emotions and
create a connection with the reader.
However, your conflict has to be
something your audience can relate to.
Swipe
Example:
“The weight loss space is filled with
people who are more interested in
taking your money than helping
you lose weight.”
Swipe
4. Resolve Conflict
Never leave a conflict unresolved

5. Paint picture
No, you don’t need a canvas and brushes.
You only need words that help your
audience picture exactly what you are
talking about as they read your story
Swipe
Example:
“Our coaching program helps you become more
confident…”
Vs.
“At the end of our coaching program, you will be
able to show up at your workplace chin up,
shoulders back. No slouching during meetings, no
fidgeting and stuttering during presentations...”

6. Keep it real
This is as straightforward as it sounds. Be
true to your story and authentic to your
brand positioning.
Swipe
7. Inspire action
Tell your readers what you want them to
do. Brand storytelling is not like fiction
novels that are aimed at entertainment.
