THE ONE-PAGE

GUIDE TO COACHING

PAUSE FOR 15 SECONDS

Every time the person finishes a sentence or thought,
give a verbal cue such as 'Hmm' or 'Yep.' Every time the
person pauses, count slowly to 15 in your head before you
speak. At 5 and 10 seconds, if they still haven't spoken,
give a verbal cue of 'Hmm' or 'Yeah' during the pauses.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
If they haven't spoken after a 15 second pause, repeat
back the last few words they spoke. Eg. 'You don't know
what to do next...' Then count to 15 again.

SUMMARISE BACK
If they don't speak for 15 seconds after asking them a
reflection question, summarise back to them the last few
things they've said. Eg. 'So what I'm hearing is...' Then
count to 15 again.

ASK GREAT QUESTIONS

If they don't speak for 15 seconds after you've
summarised, ask a great question (see separate list).
Eg. 'What else?', 'Anything else?' or 'What might a
great leader do in your situation?'

BOOKEND IT
Start with socialising, asking what progress they made on
last session's action steps and clarifying what topic they
want to wrestle with today. Finish by asking for action
steps, asking what was most helpful or valuable from the
session, scheduling the next session and emailing them
the topic and action steps.

SCORE ACTION STEPS

Ask 'What else?' after each action step. Once they run
out of action steps, ask them to score each action step
out of 10 for how confident they are that they'll actually
do it. If the score is 7 or lower for any action step, ask,
'What else, if anything, could you do to move that to an 8
or 9?' and add what they say to the action steps.
