ME – SEMESTER – I (New)– EXAMINATION – WINTER-2019
Subject Code: 3710713 Date: 03-01-2020
Subject Name: Power Electronics Converters and Applications
Time: 02:30 PM TO 05:00 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (a) Draw and explain static V-I characteristics and transfer characteristics of Power 07
MOSFET.
(b) Draw the buck-boost converter topology. With relevant waveforms explain its 07
operation in discontinuous mode of operation. Also, derive expression of output
voltage in terms of duty ratio in the discontinuous mode.
Q.2 (a) In a step-up converter consider all components to be ideal. The supply voltage 07
Vd is in range 8 -16V, output voltage Vo=24V (regulated), switching frequency
fs =20kHz and C=470μF. Calculate Lmin that will keep the converter operating
in a continuous conduction mode if Po ≥ 5W.
(b) Write a brief note on the techniques to improve the power factor of AC-DC 07
converters.
OR
(b) Compare Bipolar and Unipolar switching schemes of Sinusoidal PWM inverter 07
with necessary waveforms and harmonic spectrums and justify which one is
better.
Q.3 (a) With relevant waveforms and circuit, explain the operation of 3-phase bi- 07
directional (full wave) AC voltage controller operating with firing angle α = 60°
and feeding star connected resistive load.
(b) Critically evaluate Current Source Inverter with Voltage Source Inverter. 07

OR
Q.3 (a) With relevant circuits and waveforms explain the operation of Sepic converter. 07
Derive the equation of output voltage in terms of duty ratio.
(b) Draw the circuit diagram of Z-source inverter and with mathematical analysis justify 07
that it possess the capability of both stepping up and stepping down the voltage.

Q.4 (a) Draw the circuit for 3-phase to 1-phase cyclo-converter and discuss its principle 07
of operation in brief.
(b) A single phase full wave ac voltage controller working on ON-OFF control 07
technique has supply voltage of 230V, 50Hz. It supplies a resistive load of 50.
The controller is ON for 30 cycles and off for 40 cycles. Calculate (i) RMS output
voltage (ii) Input P.F (iii) Derive the average thyristor current equation and hence
calculate it.
OR
Q.4 (a) List the steps involved in space vector control of 3-phase bridge inverter. Also, 07
show that the amplitude of output voltage with this technique is 15.5 % higher
than that obtained with sine-triangle PWM technique.
(b) Discuss the need of (i) blanking circuit and (ii) isolation in power electronic 07
converters.

Q.5 (a) With relevant waveforms explain the operation of a single-phase ac-dc converter 07
as a line commutated converter. Clearly mention the conditions under which the
converter can operate in the inversion mode.
(b) Explain the principle of dual converter and briefly discuss the working of 07
circulating current type dual converter. Also draw the relevant waveforms.
OR
Q.5 (a) A 3-phase full converter is connected to a resistive load. Show that the average 07
output voltage is given by
Vo  ml 1  cos   / 3 
3V
for  / 3    2 / 3
s
where Vml is the maximum value of line voltage.
(b) Explain the method of providing electrical isolation between control circuit and 07
driver circuit using transformer when the switching frequency is very less. Draw
relevant waveforms and circuit diagram.
