At the end of this learning activity, learners will be able to:
● Read phrases, sentences and short stories with 2- syllable
words; and
● Answer questions about it

Dividing words into parts, or “chunks” helps speed up the


process of decoding. Knowing the rules for dividing syllables helps
you read words more accurately and fluently.
Two- syllable words are words that, when spoken, have two
definite sounds. To easily syllabicate 2-syllable words, you need to
clap or tap out the syllables first. Focus on each syllable separately
and say the word more than once.
To begin, try to do this activity. Note: Please ask your mother/
father/ sister/ brother to do this activity with you. Let the learner clap
and read the syllables of each word.

A. PRACTICE TASK

Practice Task 1
Read the short story below. Answer the questions that
follow and identify all the two-syllable words found in the story.
Write them on your answer sheet.

Timmy’s TV
There is a child who is fond of watching television. Timmy is his
name. Before going to school, Timmy watches television. After
classes, he does the same.

One day, his teacher told the class that there would be an
exam the following day. When he went home, he turned on the
television.
“Timmy, why are you watching the television again? You have
an exam tomorrow,” his mother said. “I have already mastered our
lessons, Mom,” Timmy said.
“But there is still a need for review,” his mother said. “Later,
Mom, because I’m watching my favorite show,” Timmy explained.
After watching it, he felt sleepy. Thus, he was not able to
prepare for the test.
He arrived late to school because of waking up late. “Good
morning, Teacher,” he said. Timmy got a low score. He felt ashamed.

Read the short story titled “Cody the Spider”. Underline


the two-syllable words used and answer the questions below.
Cody the Spider
Cody the spider and Janie the tiger lived among the
clovers. Cody the spider liked to yodel. Janie the tiger liked
the silence. Janie asked Cody to do her a favor. She asked
him to only yodel when he was laboring at work. She wanted
to enjoy the clovers in silence. Cody thought it over and
decided to reject her request. He did not like the silence.
Together, they agreed to play soft music. This made
them both happy.
