CP PHYSICS Color Mixing Lab period Background

Name: ________________________________ ___

The primary colors of light are red, blue, and green. They are called primary because they can be mixed to form any other color in the spectrum. The primary colors of pigments (such as paints or inks) are yellow, cyan (a bluish-green) and magenta (hot pink). These are the primary colors for pigments because they can be mixed to form any other color of pigment. When two primary colors are mixed, you get a secondary color. Also, a primary color of light is a secondary color for pigment. A primary color of pigment is a secondary color of light.

Purpose To use a website to make observations about the mixing of various colors of light and of pigment. Procedures Part 1: Mixing Light 1. Read the intro at the top of this sheet. Then go to: http://www.phys.utb.edu/%7Epdukes/PhysApplets/Colors/TabbedcolorBox.html 2. What are the 3 primary colors of light? _________________ _________________ _________________

3. Click on Mixing Light. What colors appear? _________________ _________________ _________________

4. Now you will be mixing colors. Do this by clicking once on a color you would like and drag the color to the desired location. Fill in the chart with the names of the colors formed when the following colors are mixed: Red Red Green Blue XXXX XXXX XXXX Green Blue

5. Now, reposition the squares so that all three colors overlap. What color is in the resulting overlap area? _________________ CP PHYSICS, Color Mixing Lab, page 2 Part 2: Mixing Pigments 6. Click on Mixing Pigments. What colors appear? _________________ _________________ _________________

7. What are the three primary colors of pigments? _________________ _________________ _________________

8. You will now be mixing pigments in the same way you did in Part 1 with light. Fill in the following chart with the names of the colors formed when the following pigments are mixed: Yellow Yellow Cyan Magenta XXXX XXXX XXXX Cyan Magenta

9. Now reposition the squares so that all three colors overlap. What color is in the resulting overlap area? ___________________ Part 3: Color Printing 10. Click on Color Printing. Are these the primary colors of light or of pigment? _____________________________ 11. At this point, all the colors are at 100% Saturation. How do you know this? _____________________________ 12. Describe what happens to a color as you reduce its saturation level. _____________________________ Websites to check out for fun: http://www.phy.ntnu.edu.tw/~hwang/shadow/shadow.html
