Group Work Requirements

Working in groups (or teams) is complex and often challenging but is recognised as an essential skill required at
work in any small, medium or large organisation. In recognition of this group work is included as a fundamental
element of the curriculum within NBS courses and all students will be expected to participate positively in their
group work.

The completion of the peer assessment forms, meeting record and collaborative working agreement will
support your group in identifying and adopting effective group work behaviours. These records also provide
part of the evidence that will be assessed by tutors in determining the most appropriate individual grade to be
allocated to each group member.

Peer Assessment Requirements

In line with the NBS Group Work Policy, all students completing any group work assignment are required to
submit an Individual Peer Assessment Form. The deadline for submitting the form is the same as the
submission of the associated group work.

The expectation is that a group works collaboratively and effectively and that each group member
demonstrates equivalent commitment and quality of contribution to the group output. Where everyone
contributed equally (similar effort and quality), then you should allocate all members (including yourself) a ‘2 -
Engaged’ score in the table overleaf.

Where the output of a group has been substantially improved as a result of the performance of a specific
individual then you should score that person a ‘3 – Highly Engaged’. Normally, only one member in a group
might be expected to score ‘3’.

However, if you feel that a member of your team has under-performed thereby requiring other group
members to undertake work on tasks allocated to that individual then you should score that person a ‘1 –
Intermittently Engaged’.

Where an individual has been largely absent from the group work, and/or has submitted work that is clearly
below the standard expected then you may score that person a ‘0 – No Meaningful Engagement’. However,
please note that your tutor will expect to have prior notification of an individual with such low engagement
before the submission of the peer assessment forms.

In all cases you should provide examples of behaviours in the comments area that provide evidence for the
score you have allocated.

Confirmation statement

I confirm that I understand the peer assessment requirements.

I confirm that my assessment of my own contribution and that of my peers is based on my honest assessment
of each person’s engagement with the team and contribution to the project.

I confirm that in making these assessments I have put aside any personal disagreements and focused on group
member performance only.
Name: Signed: Date:
MY COMPLETED PEER ASSESSMENT

In the table below I have:

1. Added my name in the top part and listed the names of each person in my group;
2. Thought carefully about my experience of working in this group and inserted the number that best
describes my own and each group member’s contribution to the group work task (using the scale below);
3. Added comments that describe examples of individual behaviours that evidence the number I have
allocated.

3—Highly Engaged. This individual made significant content and process contributions throughout the project,
and was clearly committed to making the whole project a success. The quality of the individual’s work was
excellent. Indeed, without this person’s contribution, the project would have been unlikely to be successful,
and the student may have taken on more than might reasonably have been expected. This student should
receive a higher mark than that for the group.

2—Engaged. This individual performed as expected by making a full contribution to the group and providing
work of an appropriate standard and should receive the group mark.

1— Intermittently Engaged. This individual missed some project meetings, was sometimes unprepared, or
contributed substandard work that was late and / or required correction by fellow team members;

0 – No Meaningful Engagement. The student was totally absent from the project, and the end product in no
way reflects a contribution on her or his part. Absence from the majority of meetings may have had a negative
effect on the team by forcing work to be redistributed. The individual exhibited very little effort and made
minimal contribution to the project with a failure to take any kind of responsibility for the task.
