HCl divide into 2 parts.
(i)To one part add White ppt solution in Presence of Al3+

ppt. in dil. HCl and
divide into 2 parts.
(i) To one part add a
few drops potassium A deep blue Presence of Fe3+
ferrocyanide colourisation. confirmed.
K4[Fe(CN)6]
Fe3+ + K4[Fe(CN)6] → Fe4[Fe(CN)6] +12KCl
(ii)To another part add Blood red colour Presence of Fe3+
(KCNS) appears confirmed.
Fe3+ + 3KCNS → Fe(CNS)3 + 3K+
GROUP 4(Test for Zn2+)
(a)To a little of salt Dirty white ppt. Presence of Zn2+
solution add NH4Cl
and NH4OH and pass
H2S
Zn2+ + H2S → ZnS + 2H+
ZnS + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2S↑
(b)Dissolve the above
ppt. in dil. HCl and
divide into 2 parts. White ppt. soluble in Presence of Zn2+
(i)To one part add excess of NaOH confirmed.
NaOH solution. Zn(OH)2 + Na+
Zn2+ + NaOH → Bluish white ppt. Presence of Zn2+
(ii)To another part add confirmed.
K4[Fe(CN)6] Zn2[Fe(CN)6] + 4K+
Zn2+ + K4[Fe(CN)6] → Na2ZnO2 +2H2O
Zn(OH)2 + 2NaOH →
Ash test: Greenish ash Presence of Zn2+

conc. HCl and conc.
HNO3 in the ratio 2:1 &
evaporate the solution
to half of its volume
b)To the above
solution add few drops Rosy red ppt Presence of Ni +2
of Dimethyl glyoxime confimed
followed by large
excess of NH4OH
Test for Mn2+
(a)To a little of the salt Presence of Mn2+
solution add NH4Cl, Flesh coloured ppt.
NH4OH and pass H2S
gas. Divide the ppt.
into 3 parts by adding
CH3COOH
Mn2++ H2S → MnS + 2H2
MnS + HCl → MnCl2 + H2S↑
White ppt.

(i) To one part add Presence of Mn2+


NaOH confirmed.
Mn2+ + 2NaOH → 2Mn(OH)2 + 2Na+
(ii)To second part add Brown ppt. Presence of Mn2+
bromine water. confirmed.
Br2+ + H2O → 2HBr + [O]
Mn(OH)2 + [O]→ MnO(OH)2↓
(iii)To the above Pink coloured Presence of Mn2+
brown ppt. add conc. solution is found. confirmed.
HNO3andPbO2. Boil,
cool and allow to
settle.
MnS + 2HNO3 → Mn(NO3)2 + H2S
2Mn(NO3)2 +5PbO2 + 6HNO3→ 2HMnO2 + 5Pb(NO3)2+ 2H2O

GROUP 5(Test for Ba2+)


(a)To a little of the salt White ppt. Presence of Ba2+
solution add NH4Cl,
NH4OHand (NH4)2CO3
Ba2+ + (NH4)2CO3 →
(b)Dissolve the ppt. in BaCO3 ↓+ 2NH4+ Presence of Ba2+
acetic acid and add Yellow ppt. confirmed.
K2CrO4
BaCO3 + 2CH3COOH →(CH3COO)2Ba+ H2O
(CH3COO)2Ba+K2CrO4 →BaCrO4+2CH3COOK + CO2↑
Flame test:
Make a thick paste of Apple green flame Presence of Ba2+
salt with conc. HCl on confirmed.

introduce into the
flame.
Test for Ca2+
(a)To a little of the salt White ppt. Presence ofCa2+
solution add NH4Cl,
NH4OHand (NH4)2CO3
Ca2+ + (NH4)2CO3 → CaCO3 ↓+ 2NH4+

Dissolve the ppt. in


acetic acid and divide
into 2 parts.
(b) To one part add No ppt. Presence of Ca2+
K2CrO4 confirmed.
(c) To another part add White ppt. Presence of Ca2+
NH4OH and (NH4)2C2O4 confirmed.
(CH3COO)2Ca + (NH4)2C2O4→CaC2O4 + 2CH3COONH4
Flame test:
Make a thick paste of Brick red flame Presence of Ca2+
salt with conc. HCl on confirmed.

Test for Sr2+
(a) To a little of the salt White ppt. Presence of Sr2+
solution add NH4Cl,
NH4OHand (NH4)2CO3
Sr2+ + (NH4)2CO3 → SrCO3 ↓+ 2NH4+
Dissolve the ppt. in
acetic acid and divide
into 2 parts.
(b) To one part add No ppt. Presence of Sr2+
K2CrO4 confirmed.
(c) To another part add White ppt. Presence of Sr2+
(NH4)2SO4 confirmed.
(CH3COO)2Sr + (NH4)2SO4 → SrSO4 + 2CH3COONH4
Flame test:
Make a thick paste of Crimson red Presence of Sr2+
salt with conc. HCl on confirmed.
a glass rod and
introduce into the
flame.
GROUP 6(Test for Mg2+)
(a)To a little of the salt White ppt. Presence of Mg2+
solution add NH4Cl,
NH4OHand Na2HPO4
Mg2+ + Na2HPO4→
(b)To the salt solution Mg(NH4)PO4↓ + 2NH4+ + H2O
add NaOH and a few White ppt. turns to Presence of Mg2+
drops ofmagneson blue confirmed.
