Lab: 1

Topic: Taxonomy – Classification of Living Things

Date: October 11, 2022

Aim: To observe organisms in their natural habitat and to classify them based on their visible
characteristics

Apparatus/ Materials: book, pen, 10 organisms

Method:10 organisms were observed in the home and an school environment. A table was
constructed displaying their characteristics. Another table was constructed showing the
kingdom, phylum, and class they belong to.

Observation:
TABLE 1 SHOWING ORGANISM AND THEIR VISIBLE CHARACTERISTICS
ORGANISMS VISIBLE CHARACTERISTICS

1. Bougainvillea ● The leaves have a network Venation

Plant ● The stems contain thorns
● The leaves are green
● The bark of the plant have a
greenish-brownish color
● The end have a small leaf that have a
brownish-orange color
● Flowers are pink with a network of veins

2. Mosquito ● Have clear pair of wings with cross veins

and longitudinal veins
● Have six legs (2 hind,2mid,2 fore)
● Have three body segments (abdomen with
7 abdominal segments and a cercus, have
a hairy thorax and a head with huge
compound eyes two palps between the two
antennae & a proboscis in between the two
palps and antennae)
● Body color is brownish beige with a little
black

3. Fly ● Has 6 legs

● A head with compound eyes

● 2 antennae
● A gray sort of transparent thorax with 4
back stripes
● Transparent wings with a network of veins
● A hairy abdomen

4. Ant ● 4 body segments (a thorax, nodes , a

abdomen, and a head)
● 6 legs
● Two hangover antennas
● A mandible as a mouth
● A red body with a burgundy abdomen

5. Hibiscus Plant ● Petals in multiples of five

● Flower color is kinda pinkish red ish
somewhat peach looking
● Veins on flower are narrow
● The stigma, style and stamen properties are
visible
● Leaves have a network of veins
● Leaves are light green

rump and the green fork tail

Tree holes where stems branch off
● Green stems
● Narrow leaves are bright green with little bit
of yellow in between the veins
● network and narrow veins
● Fist size fruits
● Orange and vibrant yellow fruits (sometimes
green with black spots)
9. Breadfruit ● Fruits are round with rough green surface
Tree ● Bark color is a gradient from brown up to
white

Discussion:Classification is the scientific method of grouping biological organisms on the basic

similarities between their characteristics. Organisms can be classified by observation in means
of their hairiness, color, number of wings or/and body segments, venation, etc. They can also be
classified scientifically in depth by internal structures, their development pattern, their life cycle,
etc. Organisms are grouped by their kingdoms, their phylum, their class, their order, their
families, their genus and their species.

Conclusion: The organisms observed were classified by their visible characteristics.Their

venation, color, number of body segments, wings and number of legs and also their rankings.
