and its connections. Vector Phasor Group, Parallel Operation of 3-Phase

UNIT 2: D.C. MACHINES Constructional features, methods of excitation, armature
winding, power balance, e.m.f. and torque equations, operation as generator, self
excitation principle, characteristics, armature reaction and commutation,
operation as a motor, characteristics.
UNIT 3: POLY-PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR Construction details, review of poly-
phase distributed ac winding coupled circuit equations, steady state analysis,
equivalent circuit, phasor diagram, power flow diagram, torque-slip
characteristics.
UNIT 4: SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES Constructional features, pitch factor,

conductors & metals. Energy Distributions of Electrons in a metal. Fermi Dirac
function and Fermi level. Carrier concentration in an intrinsic semiconductor. No.
of holes in valence band. Fermi level in an intrinsic semiconductor; intrinsic
concentration.
UNIT 2: TRANSPORT PHENOMENA IN SEMICONDUCTORS Mobility and
conductivity. Current density. Electrons & Holes in Intrinsic and Semiconductors:
their Fermi-level descriptions. Extrinsic charge neutrality and mass- action law.
Electrical Properties of Ge & Si. The Hall-effect. Conductivity Modulation.
Generation and Recombination of charges. Diffusion; Einstein Relation. The
continuity equation. Injected Minority- Carrier charge. Diffusion & Drift Currents.
Potential variation within a graded semiconductor.
UNIT 3: P-N JUNCTION Open circuited p-n Junction- Poisson’s equation. Band
structure of an open circuit p-n Junction. Contact difference of potential. P-n
Junction in forward and reverse bias. Current component in p-n junction. Law of
the junction. P-n Junction volt-ampere equation. Temperature dependence of p-n
junction. Charge control description of a diode Diffusion & Transition capacitance.
Early effect. Varactor diode. Junction diode switching times. Break down diodes.
Circuit application of p-n junction, Zeners and tunnel diodes, including their
parasitic effects.
UNIT 4: FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTORS Junction field effect transistor (JFET) volt
ampere and transfer characteristics. MOS Structure & Operation. V-I
characteristics (qualitative explanation). Threshold voltage, small signal models of
JFET & MOSFET low frequencies. Analysis of simple analog and digital circuits
using JFETs & MOSFETs.
UNIT 5: BJTs AND OTHER SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES Bipolar Junction Transistor
(BJT). Ebers-Moll model Analysis of BJT in cut-off, saturation & active region.
Negative resistance devices: UJTs SCRs, IGBTs and Tunnel Diodes. Opto- Electronic
Devices: Photo-diodes, light emitting diodes & solar cells.
