Mercury

Liane Perez

Mercury is a toxic
metal that is
liquid at room
temperature.

Mercury is a
chemical element
with the symbol
Hg and atomic
number 80.

Mercury is used to
making
thermometers,
barometers,
electrical switches,
streetlights,
Mercury is used in fluorescent lamps
dentistry and is and in the chemical
also found in industry as a
seafood. catalyst.
Mercury is a toxic
metal that can cause
serious and lasting
health problems.
Breathing the vapors
can cause mercury to
build up in your blood
and brain possibly
causing permanent
damage. But the
production of many
mercury-containing
products continues
around the world. The inhalation of
mercury vapour can
produce harmful
effects on the
nervous, digestive
and immune
systems, lungs and
kidneys, and may be
fatal.

Mercury and its

compounds affect
the central nervous
system, kidneys, and
liver and can disturb
immune processes;
cause tremor,
impaired vision and
hearing, paralysis,
insomnia and
emotional instability.
During the 18th to 20th centuries, hat
makers used mercury to stiffen felt for
hats. They used a type of mercury called
mercuric nitrate and worked in poorly
ventilated rooms. Over time, the hatters
inhaled mercury vapors.

In some places in
the world, Mercury,
in small amounts,
may still used in the
felting process of
men’s hats. Most
places, however,
have found an
acceptable
alternative in
Hydrogen Peroxide.

The solution to this problem would be to

avoid the use of products with mercury. For
mercury thermometers we can use digital
thermometers instead of thermometers with
mercury. Digital thermometers are the most
accurate and quickest way to take a
temperature.
For fluorescent lamps, Light-emitting diode
(LED) bulbs are a popular alternative for
those lamps. Another efficient and mercury-
free lighting alternative is the electron-
stimulated luminescence bulb, which uses
accelerated electrons to stimulate phosphor
to create light.
