Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 9

(1st Quarter)

Date: October 10, 2023 Time Allotment: 1 hour

Time: 8:30-9:30 AM

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate understanding of...

1. how genetic information is organized in genes on chromosomes
2. the different patterns of inheritance

MELC: Explain the different patterns of Non-Mendelian inheritance

I. OBJECTIVE/S:

a. Describe Non-mendelian Inheritance.

b. Differentiate genotype and phenotype.
c. Identify complex patterns of inheritance such as codominance and incomplete
dominance.
d. Show complete Punnett Squares for various genetic crosses, and analyze and interpret
the results of those crosses.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

a. Topic: Non-Mendelian Inheritance

b. Material/s: Modules, Paper and pen, PPT, Chalkboard, Laptop and TV
c. Reference/s: Science 9 Learners Module and Teachers Guide

III. LEARNING PROCEDURE:

Preparatory activities:

1. Prayer
2. Checking of attendance

A. Review/Recall
Before anything else let’s have a quick review regarding to our previous topic. What was our
topic last meeting? What is Mendelian Law of Inheritance?

B. Motivation
Who among you here love animals? Do you have pets in your house? What is your pet? What
is its color? Have you ever wondered about their colors or why they got that color? (Teacher
will show a picture of a cat) Have you seen a cat that looks like this? Now who loves plants?
(Teacher will post a picture of a flower) Especially flowers?

C. Lesson Proper

Unlocking of Difficulties:
Genetics-it is a branch of biology concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation and
heredity in organism.
Variation-Any difference between cells, individual organisms or groups of organisms of any
species.
Gene-it is a unit of heredity; a section of DNA that codes for a specific trait.
Alleles- one of two or more alternative forms of gene that arise by mutation and are found at
the same place on a chromosome.

Our lesson for today is about Non-mendelian Inheritance. Do you have any idea about this?

Non-Mendelian Inheritance from the name itself, it does not follow the Gregor Mendel’s
Law. Traits can be controlled by more than one allele gene. Alleles are neither dominant nor
recessive.

Genotype vs. Phenotype

Types of Non-Mendelian Inheritance

1. Incomplete dominance-It is a form of intermediate inheritance in which one allele
does not completely dominate another allele, resulting a new phenotype. (The teacher
will give examples using Punnett square.)
2. Complete Dominance-Both alleles are expressed in the phenotype of the
heterozygote. (The teacher will give examples using Punnett square.)
3. Multiple alleles- are alternative forms of the same gene so they influence the same
trait. The blood type is an example of this.
D. Activity
Identify whether the following is INCOMPLETE DOMINANCE or CO-DOMINANCE.

1.

2.

3.

4.

E. Generalization
Why is it important to learn Non-Mendelian Inheritance?
Answer: Non-Mendelian inheritance plays an important role in several disease
processes and can manifest as incomplete dominance where, offspring do not
display traits of either parent but rather, a mix of both.

IV. Evaluation:
A. Direction: Read carefully the question and write only the letter of the best answer.
1.Type of inheritance that results in a new heterozygous trait that is a blend of both parents.
For ex. red flower x white flower = pink flower offspring
a. Incomplete dominance b. dominant c. co-dominance d. recessive
2. Type of inheritance that results in a new heterozygous trait showing both traits side by
side. For ex. black dog x white dog = black with brown spots offspring
a. Incomplete dominance b. dominant c. co-dominance d. recessive
3. The physical appearance of an organism based on traits.
a. genotype b. meiosis c. phenotype d. genetics
4. The genetic information of organism.
a. genotype b. meiosis c. phenotype d. genetics
5. This type of inheritance wherein the patterns of phenotypes do not coincide with those
that presented in the Mendelian Law of Inheritance.
a. Non-mendelian Inheritance b. co-dominance
c. incomplete dominance d. Mendelian Inheritance

B. Complete the Punnett Square

In a certain fish, blue scales (BB) and red scales (bb) are codominant. When a fish has the hybrid
genotype, it has a patchwork of blue and red scales. Analyze and interpret the results of those
crosses.

b b

Genotype: ______________________
Phenotype: _____________________

Answers:
A. 1. a B. Genotype: 100% Bb
2. c Phenotype: 100% Patchwork fish
3. c
4. a
5. a
V. Assignment:
Define and explain the process of photosynthesis. Write your answers in your notebook.
