Answer the following questions on the answer sheet. [50 marks]

1. Explain the meaning of the following terms. [4]

a. oxidation reaction
b. oxidising agent
c. reduction reaction
d. reducing agent

2. Balance the following redox reaction by using oxidation number method. [4]
When an aqueous solution of iron (III) ions is reacted with sulfur dioxide
gas, aqueous iron (II) ions and the sulfate ion (SO4-2) are produced.

3. Explain whether the following reaction is redox reaction or not. [2]

2 HNO2(aq) + Ca(OH)2(aq) → Ca(NO2)2(aq) + 2 H2O(l)

4. Indicate the element that has been oxidized and the one that has been [12]
reduced, the reductant and the oxidant .
a. FeO + O2 --> Fe2O3
b. Cu + HNO3 --> CuNO3 + H2
c. Ca + F2 --> CaF2

5. Assign oxidation numbers to each element in each of the following [12]

substances.
a. H2O
b. Na2SO4
c. FeCl3
d. KO2
e. CaCr2O7

6. Nitrogen can have different oxidation states. The following species contain [8]
wide range of oxidation number of nitrogen, from smallest to highest.
a. Using the following species, identify oxidation number of each nitrogen
atom.
b. Determine the species that can act only as a reducing agent.
c. Determine the species that can act only as an oxidizing agent.
Show all your workings.
N2, NO3-, NO2, NO2-, NO, N.

7. Lead compounds were used in old oil paintings. These paintings are often
dark because air pollution has changed the lead compounds into black
lead (II) sulphide, PbS. The black colour can be removed by aqueous
hydrogen peroxide.
The equation for the reaction is:
PbS + 4H2O2 --> PbSO4 + 4H2O
black white
compound compound
(i) Name the white compound and state the elements it contains.
(ii) Explain where oxidation and reduction take place in the reaction. [4]

8. Name the following compounds using oxidation number method.

(a) SO2
(b) NO2
(c) NO
2- [4]
(d) SO4
