Assessment Task Notification

Student Name: Stage: 4

____________________________________________ Task Number: Part A
Course: Technology (Mandatory)
Task due: Week 7
Area of study: Engineered Systems
Mark out of: 20
Date issued: Week 4
Weighting: 20%
Task Type: Research/A3 poster

Task Context: Engineered systems are all around us. They are in our homes, classrooms, shopping
centers and even our streets! All these use different forces, motion and energy in different ways.

Task Description: Students are to select an everyday item from the list below. Each of these items
can be considered a simple machine and can have multiple applications. If you wish to choose
another item you must consult with your teacher.
- See-saw (Lever)
- Slide (Ramp)
- Lift (Pulley)

Students will research and answer the following questions.

The information will be presented as a digital A3 poster and will include graphics to support the
information.

1. Identify and define two possible forces that can be applied to this simple machine. Provide an
image for each to support your definition.

2. What does the Law of Conservation of Energy state? Define the terms ‘kinetic energy’ and
‘potential energy’. Provide an example for each of these categories of energy and include an image
to support your information.

3. Explain how your chosen simple machine utilizes both kinetic and potential energy. What forces
are applied to create motion in this machine?

Task Submission:

Students will need to submit completed A3/PDF/Word poster to canvas submission box. Please see
stage four assessment booklet for late submission penalties.

Key Terms Guide

Identify  Name.

 Before you can explain you must: Identify outline describeexplain.
 Key words for explain: “the effect of” or “the result of”.
Outcomes being assessed by this task:
TE4-8EN explains how force, motion and energy are used in engineered systems
TE4-1DP designs, communicates and evaluates innovative ideas and creative solutions to authentic problems
