INTRODUCTION

Some enzymes require mildly alkaline

conditions while others operate only in weakly
acidic conditions. Amongst the latter category
of enzymes, some control digestion of
proteins present in food as it reaches
stomach. Dil. hydrochloric acid is secreted and
it provides mildly acidic conditions required for
functioning of protein igesting enzymes.
However, sometimes the stomach begins to
secrete an excess causing hyperacidity due to
over eating and spicy food. This interferes in
normal process leading to acute indigestion.

Nowadays, there are available many

commercial products known as ANTACIDS,
which neutralize the excess HCl secreted.
Commonly used antacids are Gelusil, Milk of
Magnesia, Digene.
OBJECTIVE

This project aims at

analyzing some of the
commercial antacids to
compare their
effectiveness by
determining the amount of
hydrochloric acid they can
neutralize.
THEORY
The action of antacid is based on the fact
that a base can neutralize acid forming salt
and water.
An essential requirements of an antacid is
that it must not supply an excess of alkali
which may lead to alkaline conditions,
thus being ineffective. This is achieved by
incorporating other constituents which
help to keep pH within an acidic range.
Stomach keeps on emptying itself and
action of antacid lasts only for a short
while, irrespective of the dose taken.
Hence, it should be taken at frequent
intervals.
EXPERIMENT
AIM: To analyze samples by determining
amount of HCl they can neutralize.

REQUIREMENTS: Burettes, pipettes, titration

flasks, measuring flasks, weights, NaOH, HCl,
Na₂CO₃, phenolphthalein and methyl orange.
PROCEDURE:
1. Prepare 1L of 0.1 N HCl solution by diluting 10ml of the
concentrated acid to 1L.
2. Similarly, make 1L of 0.1 N NaOH solution by dissolving 4g of
NaOH to prepare 1L of solution.
3. Prepare 0.1 N Na₂CO₃ solution by weighing exactly 1.325g of
anhydrous Na₂CO₃ and then dissolving it in water to prepare
exactly 0.25L of solution.
4. Standardise the HCl solution by titrating it against standard
Na₂CO₃ solution using methyl orange.
5. Standardise NaoH solution by titrating it against standardised
HCl solution using phenolphthalein.
6. Powder various samples and weigh 1g each.
7. Add specific volume of HCl to each in conical flasks. Acid to be
in slight excess, so that it can neutralize all alkaline components.
8. Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein and warm flask till most of
dissolve dissolves. Filter off insoluble material.
9. Titrate this solution against standardised NaOH solution, till
permanent pinkish tinge obtained.
10. Repeat with different antacids

CONCLUSION
The antacid for which
maximum volume of HCl
is used for neutralising,
is the most effective.
