ABSTRACT

This experimental research aimed to determine the effectiveness of pomelo

peel in deodorizing and cleaning furnishings. It also answers the question of how

4
effective pomelo peel is in deodorizing and cleaning compared to commercial

products.

The primary objective of this research project is to determine whether pomelo

peel can be utilized to clean and deodorize furnishings and to determine the

effectiveness of pomelo peel in cleaning and deodorizing furnishings. Pomelo peel is

rich in essential oils, which are known to control the population kinetics of microbes,

including bacteria, various viruses, and infectious fungi. Essential oils have various

applications. such as aromatherapy and perfumery. Essential oils can also alleviate

antibiotic resistance in multiple pathogenic microorganisms. It can help clean

furnishings and make them smell better.

Pomelo was gathered by the researcher in their backyard, and after that, it was

peeled. After peeling, the pomelo peel is boiled. Determining the effectiveness of

pomelo peel in cleaning and deodorizing furnishings is the main goal of this research.

The study found that the pomelo peel is effective in cleaning and deodorizing

furnishings. The results of the study provide enough knowledge and information

about pomelo peels.

CHAPTER 1

RATIONALE

8
The pomelo tree is commonly found everywhere in Asian countries. It is a

tree that bears a pomelo fruit, a pulp fruit that is usually pink in color. It is covered by

a thick pomelo peel that has an appearance of either pale green or yellow green. It

serves as a protection of the inside pulp from any oxidation, for instance, because it is

rich in antioxidants.

When eating pomelo, most of the time, the pomelo peel is only thrown away

and considered waste. Not knowing that this waste could be turned into something

such as a deodorizer and cleaning agent for furnishings.

Furniture are sometimes irritating for having an unpleasant smell, and most of

the time the metals, such as the curtain holder, are rusting due to the exposure to

oxygen. Most of the cleaning agents and deodorizers that people are using today

contain harmful chemicals that could affect the welfare of humans, animals, and the

environment. To prevent this, the group comes up with the idea of proving the

effectiveness of pomelo peel for deodorizing and cleaning furnitures, as it does not

contain any harmful chemicals.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

9
Pomelo is commonly found in every part of Asia, but it originates in Thailand.

It is known as a non-hybrid citrus fruit that produces many different products. Its tree

grows at approximately 16–50 feet tall. The characteristics of the pomelo peel are

either greenish-yellow or pale-yellow, while the inside color varies to either pink or

red. Its tastes vary from neither sour nor sweet to bland, and it has an aftertaste of a

little bit of bitterness (Cheong, Shao, Zhou, & Yu, 2013).

In eating pomelo, only the pulp inside is edible, while the peel is thrown away.

Pomelo peel is considered biodegradable as it can be decomposed after how many

days? People become curious about how this pomelo peel could be useful,

disregarding the fact that it protects the inside pulp of pomelo.

The peel of the pomelo contains a higher amount of antioxidants than its

actual pulp. The main purpose of its peel is to protect the fruit from oxidation (Toh,

Khoo, and Azrina, 2013). It accounts for approximately 30% of the total fruit weight

and contains phytochemicals, including aroma-active volatiles, pectin, flavonoids,

phenolic acids, carotenoids, coumarins, and polysaccharides. The result of antioxidant

capacity assays indicated that for citrus peels, hot water extract had almost the same

capacity as the methanol extract ( R. Tocmo 2020). Which the flavonoids are good

for deodorizing as well as the methanol extract for cleaning furniture.

Methanol extract is a form of alcohol that can be used to clean and get rid of

stains from furniture, as bacteria are the main cause of dirt and odor into the furniture.

It is commonly used in industries such as pesticides, solvents, and alternative fuel

sources.

10
The general objective of this study is to prove the effectiveness of pomelo

peel for deodorizing and cleaning furnishings. Furthermore, the purpose of this is to

provide a home remedy for deodorizing and cleaning furnishings without involving

any harmful chemicals. In addition, if it is proven, this study specifically aims to

convince users to use it as a natural and environmentally friendly deodorizer and

cleaner of furnishings.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

RELATED STUDY

In order to minimize the toxic effects of scent compounds from chemicals to

the environment and humans. Besides, the increasing demand of consumers for

natural compounds, so the research team has conducted a search for compounds with

good odor-producing ability and high activity extracted from the species plants in

nature. The study was carried out based on the investigation of influencing parameters

in product formulations such as carrier, essential oil, emulsifier, solvent. Research

results are based on the evaluation of the product's volatility and appearance. At the

same time, it is also shown that pomelo essential oil has the ability to combine with

many other ingredients in the product without being denatured, with the content of 4%

pomelo essential oil is diffused with a pleasant scent that is not pungent and can High

deodorizing capacity in the air. The obtained research results have opened new

perspectives on the applicability and potential of essential oils in the aromatherapy

industry or cosmetic field, used as an alternative to artificial fragrances with

properties of environmental friendliness (T. Ngan, T. Tran, L Ngoc Minh, et.al, 2021).

18
RELATED LITERATURE

Citrus grandis Osbeck is the largest citrus fruit, sometimes known as "pomelo"

or "shaddock," and its peel is a well-known agricultural residual waste. Pomelo peel

contains a variety of components with potential dietary applications, including

essential oils, polysaccharides, and phytochemicals. Utilization of pomelo peel to

recover these components is an important step toward agricultural sustainability. This

review covers pomelo peel utilization opportunities beyond conventional composting

and animal feed production, and critically examines value-added uses via the recovery

of potentially bioactive components. The peel of pomelo accounts for approximately

30% of the total fruit weight and contains phytochemicals, including aroma-active

volatiles, pectin, flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, coumarins, and polysaccha-

rides. Recovery of these phytochemicals offers an opportunity for value-added

utilization such as the development of enriched or functional foods and nutraceuticals.

The health-promoting and therapeutic potential of pomelo peel extracts and isolated

pure compounds have been evaluated through numerous in vitro and in vivo studies

that revealed a wide range of bioactivities, including hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic,

antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Preclinical

evidence highlights multifaceted molecular and signaling events that possibly underlie

the said bioactive potential. Overall, the pomelo processing industry offers a great

opportunity to recover or produce valuable products from the large amounts of

19
residual wastes it generates. It is envisaged that a thorough understanding of the

bioactive components of pomelo peel, their functional and nutraceutical applications,

and mode of actions will benefit the food industry. (Tocmo, Fronteras, Calumba, and

Mendoza, 2020).

The present study aimed to determine the factors affecting the use of cleaning

products at the home environment and the frequency of problems. The pomelo fruit

has been linked to several purposes. It is rich in vitamin C and has been used in

indigenous medicine as a sedative for nervous affections and convulsive cough, and

as a treatment for hemorrhagic disease and epilepsy (Vijaylakshmi & Radha, 2015).

RELATED LEGAL BASES

Executive Order 134 (Order) was issued on January 5, 2005 to reduce the

environmental impact of cleaning State facilities. The Order requires all State

agencies and certain public authorities to procure and use cleaning products having

properties that minimize the potential impact on human health and the environment.

Such products shall conform to guidance for environmentally preferred cleaning

products that may be provided pursuant to the Order such as the use of alternative

cleaning products- citrus peels, baking soda, etc.

JUSTIFICATION

For their furniture, many homes overuse professional cleaners and

deodorizers. As certain cleaning and deodorizing treatments are expensive, the

researchers looked for an inexpensive product that may assist them in cleaning their

20
furniture. The pomelo peel is not as efficient at cleaning and deodorizing as

commercial treatments. Nonetheless, the pomelo peel is more effective than the

synthetic one. Pomelo peel is extremely simple to locate and prepare.

CHAPTER 3

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study methodology, statistical approach, and technique developed for this

endeavor are presented in this chapter. This contains details on the investigative

project's procedures, how the components were prepared, and the steps used to

evaluate the pomelo peel's efficacy in cleaning and deodorizing furniture. The goal of

the research design is to evaluate how well pomelo peel cleans and freshens up

furniture. T-test Design was the method of research.

RESEARCH DESIGN

All experimental procedures were approved and supervised by the subject-

teacher. The current study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the

pomelo peel as cleaner and deodorizer for furnishings. Two different treatments

( distillation and soaking ) were used to complete the t-test design.

Furnishings was used as a tester. The collected juiced from the soaked and

distilled pomelo peel was used to determine the effectiveness of Pomelo Peel in the

term of cleaning and deodorizing furnishings. The its capacity to increase internal

21
validity, Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) can be the best method for evaluating

the efficacy or effectiveness of therapies. As well as the t-test were be used as

statistical analysis that contrasts the averages of two groups.
