CHAPTER I

Introduction

In the current situation of our country, it is not possible to start face-to-face

learning that has physical contact between the students to fellow students, students to

teachers, and teachers to teachers. The Department of Education (DepEd) thought of a

solution by implementing distance learning that is new to everyone and that is called new

normal.

According to Malaya (2020), there are different types of delivery modalities such

as Online Distance Learning (ODL), Modular Distance Learning (MDL), and Self-

Learning modules (TV/Radio- Based Instruction). The students are permitted to choose

what they want as their method of learning based on their available resources. Modular

Distance Learning allows learners to use self-learning modules (SLM’s) in print or

electronic copy. In Modular Distance Learning, the teachers will have to deliver the

learning materials or the parents will have to get it in a certain place. Online Distance

Learning allows the students and the teachers to have classes and assessments through the

use of the internet. The teachers and students use google meet and google classroom to

have classes and upload the activities.

Students have to know how to adjust and learn in today's process of learning.

Since the environment in the house and at school is different, there are certain factors that

can affect their way on how to study. According to Alex (2011), study habit is described

as something that is done on a scheduled, regular, and planned basis that is not relegated

to a second-place or optional place in one’s life. It can be improved upon by constant

practice; it is very hard to give up a habit once it is formed. Study habits are actions such

11
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

as listening to music, taking down notes, holding a group study with classmates or

friends, and many more.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to compare the factors affecting the study habits of Grade 12 STEM

students in HCPSMSHS in Online and Modular distance learning. Specifically, it aims to

discover the answers to the following questions:

1. How may the profile of the respondents be described in terms of:

1.1 age;

1.2 gender; and

1.3 section?

2. Is there a significant difference between Online and Modular distance learning of Grade

12 STEM students of HCPSMSHS in terms of study habits?

3. Is there a significant difference between the factors affecting the study habits of Grade 12

STEM students in HCPSMSHS in Online and Modular distance learning in terms of:

3.1 Attitude of the student;

3.2 Family and friends;

3.3 Internet connection;

3.4 Environment; and

3.5 Gadgets?

Hypothesis

Based on the problems stated, the following assumptions will be formulated:

1. The profile of the respondents cannot be described in terms of:

1.1 age;

12
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

1.2 gender; and

1.3 section

2. There is no significant difference between Online and Modular distance learning of

Grade 12 STEM students of HCPSMSHS in terms of study habits

3. There is no significant difference between the factors affecting the study habits of Grade

12 STEM students in HCPSMSHS in Online and Modular distance learning in terms of:

3.1 Attitude of the student;

3.2 Family and friends;

3.3 Internet connection;

3.4 Environment; and

3.5 Gadgets

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

The following studies presented in the following paragraphs tackled different ideas,

concepts, and developments in the past in line with the topic of the study, namely factors

affecting the study habits of the students.

Studies have shown that there are a lot of factors that affect the study habits of a student.

According to Independence University (2020), it’s your study habits that will get you through to

your college degree and not your charm. But sometimes, no matter how much you’ve worked to

create a study habit and stay focused, other factors creep in. Oftentimes, these factors are out of

your control but becoming aware of any factors affecting study habits increases your chances of

success. There are top five factors that are seriously affecting your study habits: Weather, Social

life, Health, your interest in the material and your ultimate goal. These five are not the only

factors that could affect a student’s study habits but a lot more. In the whole world a lot of

student’s have a variety of study habits that helps them in their education. A study was conducted

in Davao Doctors College by Gementiza, K. Saco, R. and Cielo, J. on 2017 focuses on one of the

factors affecting the student’s study habits is social media, with 47 million Facebook users in the

Philippines it is quite obvious that almost half of the population are in the field of social media.

Another factor would be the attitude of a student, as Husain (2000) said, negative attitude

towards study sometimes finds expression in comments such as “I study but cannot remember

what I study” or “the lessons are too long”. Attitude serves as an index on how we think and feel

about people, objects and issues in our environment. Study attitude refers to the predispositions

which students have developed towards private readings through a period of time. According to

him, study attitude offers great possibilities for successful achievement in studies. Study method

is the knowledge and application of effective study skills or techniques by students. Several study

16
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

methods have identified several effective study methods and skills that could be used by students

based on the learning environment.

Nalwa & Anand (2003) conducted the research study in India showed that

dependent groups were found to delay work when they spent more time for online activities and

they lost sleep due to late-night online habits. Some of the respondents accepted that without the

internet their life would be boring. The dependent group spent more hours on the

internet comparatively to the non-dependent group. On the loneliness amount, the dependent

group scored higher than the non-dependent group. (Singh, D. 2014). Also in Nigeria, there are so

many factors influencing the ability of students to cultivate effective and efficient study habits.

Ozmert (2015) emphasized the importance of environmental influence as a major factor in the

development of students' studying habits. In the same vein, Adetunji and Oladeji (2007) submit

that the environment of most children is not conducive for studying; it is in the light of this that

made some parents to prefer their children to go to boarding school for proper discipline and to

inculcate better reading habit.

According to Geetika Sharma and Dr. Charu Vyas (2017) these are some of the important

factors that affect the study habits. First is home, it is the first school for every child and mother is

the first teacher. If the home environment is good, automatically the child's nature in the school is

good. Hence the relationship with family member such as parents, brothers and sisters influence

the child’s performances. Second is the school environment, the teachers and the peer group also

play an important role in his study habits. Parents should keep an eye on the friends of their child.

Because with good friends, he/she learns good habits. Third is the curriculum, it is also one of the

factors for developing good study habits. Curriculum should be constructed on the standards of

the child. Fourth is the personality of the child, it is very important factor in developing good

study habits. If the child gets easily adjusted with the environment, he/she develop good study

habits. Intelligence also plays a pivotal role in developing good study habits of the child. It is

general observation that intelligent students stand in top positions. Last is the community,

17
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

community has to arrange the community centers such as library facilities, community resource

centers, information centers, etc. a good community provides necessary facilities for good study

habits. Study habits may be a good or poor once

Study habits are termed as the methods of study of students. Study habits are student’s

ways of studying whether systematic, efficient or inefficient (Ayodele & Adebiyi, 2013) implying

that efficient study habits produces positive academic performance while inefficient study habits

lead to academic failure. Socio-Economic Status (SES) of parents and the education agencies play

a vital role in molding the study habits of the students at all levels of education. Plowden (1967)

revealed that when both parents and teachers provide the support system needed to guide their

child’s growth, the child has a greater chance for educational achievement. The study habits, with

proper environment, feedback and guidance help the individual to develop a balanced personality.

In school, the teachers while at their home the parents should guide the students for his/her study

habits.

According to GoodStudy (2020), the vast majority of successful students achieve their

success by developing and applying effective study habits. The following are the top 10 study

habits employed by highly successful students. So if you want to become a successful student,

don't get discouraged, don't give up, just work to develop each of the study habits below and

you'll see your grades go up, your knowledge increase, and your ability to learn and assimilate

information improve. First, don’t attempt to cram all your studying into one session. Second, plan

when you’re going to study. Third, study at the same time. Fourth, each study time should have a

specific goal. Fifth, never procrastinate your planned study session. Sixth, start with the most

difficult subject first. Seventh, always review your notes before starting an assignment. Eighth,

make sure you’re not distracted while studying. Ninth, use study groups effectively. Lastly,

review your notes, schoolwork and other class materials over the weekend.

Studies of Lykalogab 2012) have shown that giving too many assignments or quizzes is

not healthy for learning due to stress leading to confusion, focal distraction and short attention

18
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

span. Nowadays, there are several ways on how to cope up with good study habits and fight out

stress and problems that may pave the way to learning. Also, due to the massive influence of

modern technology today students have difficulties in overcoming their motivation to study

although at times gadgets can also be of assistance in their studies.

There are various factors that affect the students‟ academic achievement. Amongst these

factors are some activities called study habits which the students gained, preferred and like to do

for learning at and out of school. Findings of the study of Oluwatimilehin and Owoyele (2012),

revealed that of all the study habits’ subscales, “teacher consultation” was most influential while

the “time allocation” exercise, concentration, no taking reading and assignments were regarded as

less integral to students’ academic performances. Therefore, regular counseling services to train

students on study skills strategies were advocated in order to boost their study habit and enhance

their academic achievement.

CHAPTER III

Methodology

The type of research, conceptual framework, general procedures, sampling procedures

and samples, and data collection techniques and procedure are presented in this chapter

Type of Research

The type of research design that the researchers would like to propose is

quantitative research to be accurate non-experimental comparative research. A non-

experimental comparative research study is used to determine and quantify the

relationships between two or more variables by observing different groups either by

choice or circumstances. According to Bhandari (2021), Quantitative research is the

process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and

averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize results to wider

populations.

The researchers want to propose this type of quantitative research because this is

the first in our history of conducting long-term distance learning methods in teaching

students. Since the world is experiencing a pandemic specifically a Covid-19 virus that is

very dangerous to humans’ health, this is the first time education management (DepEd)

decided to conduct two types of learning which are modular and asynchronous or

synchronous e-learning for this academic school year.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers aim to gather information on the differences between the factors

affecting the study habits of students in online and modular distance learning. The study

20
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

habits of the students are writing down notes or listening to music while learning, or maybe

watching tutorial videos online for educational purposes, having a group study with other

students, and planning ahead of time for doing school work. But since the pandemic happens

in our world, there are some changes in the way of learning of the students that affect their

study habits because the students have to adjust to the new normal. The factors that are

affecting the study habits of the students are attitude, family, friends, internet connection,

environment, and friends. By taking on this matter, the researchers were able to assess what

are the differences between the factors affecting the study habits of students in the two

distance learning modality.

General Procedures

The following is the procedure that the researchers did in comparing the factors affecting

the Grade 12 STEM students in HCPSMSHS in Modular and Online Distance Learning.

Identifying the Making of survey

Gathering of data
problem questionnaires

Forming a Collecting and Performing the

conclusion Analyzing the data survey

Identifying the problem

First, the researchers identify what problem they want to do in this research by

checking the latest issue that is happening in our country and our society. After the

researchers identified the problem, the researchers used Quantitative Non- Experimental

Research Design for the study.

Gathering of data

The researchers gathered all the available information that can be acquired and

accessed through the use of the internet and other reliable websites or sources that have

pertinent detail to the researchers’ study.

Making of survey questionnaires

The researchers made questions for the survey questionnaire that are connected to

the subject matter of the study. The approval of the research adviser is needed, so the

researchers submitted the final questionnaire for checking. After the researcher adviser

22
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

checked the questionnaires, the researchers asked for permission to perform a survey by

sending a letter to the principal.

Performing the survey

After the principal approved the letter, the researchers performed the survey to

60% of the population to represent it as a whole. The researchers used a stratified random

sampling technique so that each individual has the same probability of being chosen. The

researchers gave the survey form to randomly selected 20 students from each section in

online distance learning and modular distance learning. The platform that the researchers

used to perform the survey is google forms.

Collecting and Analyzing the Data

The researchers collected the data after all the participants answered the survey

questionnaires. The collected data was organized, analyzed, and presented by the

researchers to compare the differences in the factors affecting the students in modular and

online distance learning. The researchers used graphs as visual aids for a more elaborate

and clear presentation of the results.

Forming a conclusion

After the collection and analysis of data, the last procedure is to summarize the

result of the data and form a conclusion of the study regarding the comparison of the

factors affecting the study habits of Grade 12 STEM students in HCPSMSHS in online

and modular distance learning.

Sampling Procedure and Samples

The researchers used stratified random sampling to the whole grade 12 STEM

students. The researchers used this sampling technique to get a participant in each section

23
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

and it enables to obtain a sample population that best represents the entire population

being studied by dividing it into subgroups called strata. According to Hayes (2020),

Stratified random sampling is a method of sampling that involves the division of a

population into smaller sub-groups known as strata. In stratified random sampling, the

strata are formed based on members' shared attributes or characteristics. The sampling

procedure is elaborated using the diagram below.

Diagram 2: Flowchart of the stratified random sampling performed.

Data Collection Techniques and Procedure

The researchers collected the information needed in the study through questionnaires by

using google forms as a platform to have the data easily organized and arranged. The

questionnaire is one of the techniques in collecting quantitative data and instruments used.

According to Satya (2012), a questionnaire is a series of questions asked to individuals to obtain

statistically useful information about a given topic. The questionnaire is also good for collecting

data from a big number of respondents situated in different places, it will be more efficient in

terms of giving it to our target because of the pandemic that is happening right now.

This study focused on the students of Honorato C. Perez Sr. Memorial Science High

School, mainly on all of the Grade 12 students under the STEM who are in Online and Modular

Distance Learning. The researchers calculated the sample of the population by getting 20% of

each section’s total number of students and adding them altogether. As a result, there were 20

respondents each from XII STEM Leeuwenhoek, Pasteur, Rutherford, Maxwell, and Bell for a

total number of 100 students. The researchers used stratified random sampling on choosing the 20

respondents from each section to have an equal chance of being chosen.

The researchers will use ANOVA to find the answer to our statement of the problem.

According to Singh (2018), Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a statistical technique that is used

24
HONORATO C. PEREZ, SR. MEMORIAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL

to check if the means of two or more groups are significantly different from each other. ANOVA

checks the impact of one or more factors by comparing the means of different samples. It is the

most appropriate statistical test for the study because the researchers will compare the major

factors affecting the study habits of the modular and online classes. The data will be presented

through graphs and tables for better understanding and easier presentation of data.

According to McLeod (2015), ethical guidelines refers to correct rules of conduct necessary

when carrying out a research. Researchers have a moral responsibility to protect research

participants from any harm. The following ethical guidelines are put into place for the research

period:

1. The research data will remain private and confidential that limits access to the

information gathered throughout the study.

2. The researchers got the permission of the respondents to use their information in the

research paper.

3. The respondents will have a choice to not reveal themselves and stay anonymous because

of anonymity.

4. The researchers will be honest about the results that will be obtained in the study.
