English in Philippine Education:

Solution or Problem?

If there would be a thing that will represent English language, I could say it’s like a
bridge. Here’s a definition of “bridge” according to Wikipedia; a bridge is a structure built to
span a physical obstacle (such as a body of water, valley, road or railway) without blocking
the way underneath. It is constructed for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle,
which is usually something that is otherwise difficult or impossible to cross. Just like a
bridge, English language has become the most effective tool in communication in a certain
way that the people who are talking with different nationality and does not share the same
language. With the use of English language, it is possible to cross the gap of not being
understood because the people who uses English language understand what is being said in
English.

To answer the question, English in Philippine Education: Solution or Problem?

Personally, I would say English in Philippine Education is not a problem and it will never be,
it’s a solution, rather. Since I was in grade school, high school up to college, the medium of
instruction had been in English always, most importantly in examination papers. Aside from
that, many sectors also use English as their medium of instruction such as on the Government
Sector, Healthcare Sector and others. In connection, the reason why English in Philippine
education is a solution because nowadays, the world becomes more globally competitive in
terms of using the English language. As an English Language student, I have grown a lot in
terms of having knowledge and the use of English in everyday basis. I wasn’t really good in
English before, but I can say that I am now better than I was. It’s a privilege that Filipino
