Tutorial 5: Economic Dispatch

Question 1
The fuel-cost curves for two generators are given as follows

𝐶1(𝑃1) = 650 + 19 × 𝑃1 + 0.05 × 𝑃12

𝐶2(𝑃2) = 710 + 25 × 𝑃2 + 0.03 × 𝑃22

Assuming the system is lossless, calculate the maximum dispatch values of 𝑃1 and 𝑃2 for a total
load of 1000MW, the incremental operating cost, and total operating cost.

Question 2
Rework Question 1, except assume that the generators outputs are subject to the following
inequality constraints:

200 ≤ 𝑃1 ≤ 800𝑀𝑊

100 ≤ 𝑃2 ≤ 400𝑀𝑊

Question 3
Rework Question 1, except assume that the 1000 MW value also includes losses, and the
penalty factor for the first unit is 1.0 and for the second unit is 0.95.

Question 4
The fuel-cost curves for two generators are given as follows

𝐶1(𝑃1) = 570 + 15 × 𝑃1 + 0.05 × 𝑃12

𝐶2(𝑃2) = 710 + 25 × 𝑃2 + 0.04 × 𝑃22

While the system losses can be approximated as

If the system is operating with a marginal cost of $60/hr, determine the output of each unit, the
total transmission losses, the total load demand, and the total operating cost.
