USES OF WOULD

USES OF WOULD:
Future for the past (1)
Future for the past reflects the perspective about a hypothetically
conceived action that would occur in the past formed using a
structure with "would", and the action derived from that perspective
formed using the simple past tense.

b) They said they would be here by 9pm,
and they arrived on time.
c) The newspapers said it would rain but it didn't.

started shining with many goals.
e) We expected your brother would be a bad
writer, and at the end he was.
USES OF WOULD:
Past refusals
We use "would" when something was refused in the past.
a) He wanted a divorce but she wouldn't agree.
b) I needed the car but dad wouldn't give it to me.
c) Lorena didn't want Stacy to come to the party,
but she would come anyways. Lots of drama.
d) Yesterday, the car wouldn't start even though
I needed it so badly.
e) Mark didn't ask for help, yet he'd be helped by me
USES OF WOULD:
Past behaviour
We also use "would" for habitual past behaviour
(as a synonym of 'used to')
a) When I was younger, I would paint for 2 hours every day.
b) I would do something funny when Lea was angry.
c) Moses would have doubts until he saw it.
d) Frank wouldn't arrive on time before he was fired
from his first job.
e) They would win every competition so I was happy
for their success.
USES OF WOULD:
Future for the past (2)
We also use "would" to express something that has not
happened at the same time we’re talking about.
a) In London she met the man that she would marry one day.
b) Jennifer invented something that would
become a great achievement in science.
c) Christopher would see us again, after we
meet at Regina's party.
USES OF WOULD:
Opinions
We use "would" to express our opinions in a kind way.
Examples:
a) I would imagine they'll arrive for on dinner time.
b) She would guess you'll apply for the
scholarship.
c) I would think you are going to try on
these clothes.
d) They would suppose we'll break up.
USES OF WOULD:
Wishes
We use "would" to express wishes in certain situations.
Examples:
a) They don't like me. I'm sure they wish I'd resign.
b) I bet Mary wishes we would work together.
c) They love me. It's certain they wish I'd
come back.
d) You can't deny Mark wishes I'd become
his girlfriend.
EXTRA:
Was/were going to
"Was/were going to" is often used to talk
about an intention or plan that didn’t happen.
Examples:
a) I was going to tell her but I didn’t have time.
b) They were going to start the project on Monday
but they had to change plans due to an operational issue.
c) He told me he was going to travel by bus so I’ll
wait for him at the stop.
d) She said she was going to wash her hair tonight
so couldn’t go out.
