AIM: To compare the effects of oral curcumin gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) with the effects
achieved by SRP alone by assessing their effects on plaque, gingival inflammation, and gingival bleeding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CLINICAL RESULTS: MECHANISM OF ACTION:
PARAMETERS:
INTERGROUP COMPARISION OF
SAMPLE SIZE 30 1. PLAQUE INDEX (PI) PLAQUE INDEX(PI), GINGIVAL INDEX (GI),
2.GINGIVAL INDEX (GI) AND SULCUS BLEEDNG INDEX (SBI) AT
3. SULCUS BLEEDING BASELINE, 7 DAYS, 14 DAYS, AND 21DAYS.

CURCUMIN GEL:

CURCUMIN ONLY SRP
(GROUP A) - 15 (GROUP B) - 15
DISCUSSION:
1% curcumin gel and 0.1% chlorhexidine gel following SRP showed significant improvement in clinical parameters as well as more reduction of colony-forming units.
Farjana et al, Davi et al and Anitha et al.
Antiplaque effects of curcumin in gingivitis by evaluating salivary reactive oxygen species and proposed that antioxidant properties of curcumin can be responsible
for its anti-inflammatory action. Arunachalam et al.
CONCLUSION: Adjunctive use of oral Curcumin gel showed better improvement in the reduction of plaque scores, gingival
inflammation, and gingival bleeding than receiving only mechanical debridement as a treatment modality. Thus, Curcumin gel
used as an adjunct to scaling and root planning has a significant therapeutic effect on the management of gingivitis.
