VIDAMO, KATELYN V.

My Teaching Profession: “Teaching” in My Own Words…

There are many definitions of the word education. Psychology Today has defined Education as “whether
formal or informal, it can shape an individual’s life, both classroom and outside of it” (Psychology
Today, n.d.). Education is significant to the society because it wipes away ignorance and establishes
knowledge and skills among individuals. Without education, no human will ever survive since we are the
backbone of the society. Everyone of us are being educated to become a part of the contributors of
change in the growing society.

In my own words, I believe that learners deserve to attain the highest possible quality education
because they need to adapt to the forever changing world. Nowadays, the abundance of mental illness
among children and adolescents is prevalent and as a future educator, it is our duty to make them feel
that they are important, loved, and adored by listening to them and understanding them to satisfy their
needs. Students of today are immersed in gadgets especially in social media and are more vocal of the
current issues than the previous generation. They also learn effectively if the teacher is fervently giving
fair praises and affirmations on their performance in class. In that sense they will feel much empowered
and motivated in the process of education.

I strongly believe that teaching is the noblest profession in the world because without teachers, there
will be no doctors, politicians, engineers, musicians, scientist, and many more for it is the mother of all
professions. It is also a vocation and a passion. In order to become a part in the succession of
knowledge, a teacher must have a fiery passion in this profession. Teachers have an important role in
shaping their students to their fullest potentials in order to become an efficient part of the society. Being
a good teacher is a tedious yet fulfilling task because your teachings will become the foundation of your
students in order for them to reach their goals. It is a fulfilling task because it will be a good feeling if you
see your former students doing great and adapting well in the society.

As a future science educator in the modern society, my teaching philiposophy would be progressivism. I
chose progressivism because I will be teaching science someday and it is a tough subject that needs to
be explained thoroughly for my students to cultivate knowledge effciently in this matter. In order for my
students to understand science efficiently I would give them the freedom to explore topics like
chemistry, physics, and anatomy by giving them laboratory experiments. I want them to experience in
order for them to understand the lesson and apply it in the real world someday. Learning from
experiences is better than learning from books. To understand what the books tells, one must
experience it through activities that would give one the freedom to explore and gather answers from
hypotheses. I will teach them about topics such as botany, biology, and meteorology outdoors for them
to have an exposure to these areas. Through that, they would understand and become competent in
these subjects. A solid foundation in the natural sciences would make students to be knowledgeable on
the changes of otheir own surroundings and can formulate hypotheses that may contribute to knew
researches and discoveries. As a progressivist, I believe that learning is life-long and in the future I will
focus more on the student’s learning and will be lenient in giving them science experiments for them to
acquire knowledge through experiencing so that they can adapt in the changing society.

All in all, I believe that the youth deserves to attain the highest possible quality education. I, Katelyn V.
Vidamo, as a future science educator, my long term goal is to work on my credibility for my future
students by studying hard and gaining experiences in and out of the University of Santo Tomas College
of Education which holds the flame in the field of education. I will not let my students to go out from the
four corners of the room without learning or understanding anything. I will update my learning as long
as I can because the youth is hungry to learn and I don’t want the younger generation to have an empty
mind. Having an empty mind is much deadlier than having an empty stomach.
