Learning Objective
1. Determine the atomic mass of
elements based on the periodic table
2. calculate the molar/formula mass
of compounds;
Atomic Mass
Knowing the various Atomic Masses of elements is
helpful to calculate the molar mass of substances.

Atomic Masses
(Atomic Weight)- the
sum of the positively Atomic Mass
charged proton and
neutral neutron.
ACTIVITY 1: Complete the table
Chemical Atomic Mass
No. Element
Symbol (Atomic Weight)
1. Hydrogen H 1.008
2. Aluminum Al 26.98
3. Fluorine F 19.00
4. Iron Fe 55.85
5. Magnesium Mg 24.31
Molar Mass
Is simply the sum of the atoms in 1
mole of that substance.
Is the mass of one mole of particles
(atoms, molecules, formula units) of a
substance expressed in terms of g/mol
Molar Mass
Note: The mass of one atom and the mass of one
mole of the same atom are numerically the same.
Atomic mass of an element is expressed in amu while
the mass is expressed in g.
It means that the atomic mass of calcium is 40.08
amu and the molar mass of one mole of calcium
atom is 40.08 g. Likewise, one atom of potassium
weighs 39.10 amu and its molar mass is 39.10 g.
How do you
determine the
molar mass of a
given substance?
How to determine the molar mass of a given substance:

In calculating the molar mass,

the presence of the chemical
formula or chemical symbol of
compounds and elements,
respectively must be given.
How to determine the molar mass of substances for:
A. Atom
Consider a mole of Calcium atom ,its molar mass is 40.08
g/mol which is equivalent to its atomic weight. Therefore, one
mole of calcium has a molar mass of 40.08 g/mol. One mole of
Ca contains 6.02 x 1023 atoms. For simplicity, all atomic
mass/weights of elements will be rounded into a whole
number.
This can be represented as:
1.00 mole of Ca = 40 g = 6.02 x 1023 Ca atoms
Molar Mass = 40g/mol
How to determine the molar mass of substances for:
B. Compound
In calculating the molar mass of a compound
(be it ionic, covalent, or molecules), the
chemical formula of the compound is an
essential component. For example, your task is
to determine the molar mass of 1 mole of ethyl
alcohol (C2H5OH).
How to determine the molar mass of substances for:
B. Compound
Example: Ethyl Alcohol
Step
Write the chemical formula of

1 the given compound.

Chemical formula- C2H5OH
How to determine the molar mass of substances for:
B. Compound

Step Determine and write the elements

2
present in the compound
Elements:
Carbon (C)
Hydrogen (H)
Oxygen (O)
How to determine the molar mass of substances for:
B. Compound
C2H5OH
Step Determine the quantity of elements present in

3 the chemical formula. This is shown by the

subscript.
C =2
H= 6
O=1
How to determine the molar mass of substances for:
B. Compound
C2H5OH
Step Find out the atomic mass of the elements in the

4
periodic table and multiply it to the quantity of
elements in the chemical formula of the compound.
C = (2) (12g) = (24g)
H = (6) (1g) = (6g)
O = (1) (16g) = (16g)
How to determine the molar mass of substances for:
B. Compound
C2H5OH
Step Add all the products. This is now the formula mass of

5
the ethyl alcohol.
C = (2) (12g) = (24g)
H = (6) (1g) = (6g)
O = (1) (16g) = (16g)

Summary for Lesson 1
• The molar mass of substances is equivalent to the total
atomic mass of elements comprising the substance.
• The atomic mass of monoatomic elements served as its
molar mass.
• For compound substances, the molar mass is the sum of
all the atomic mass of the elements depending on the
quantity of the elements in a chemical formula.
Summary for Lesson 1
• A number written in a subscript form beside the
chemical symbol of elements tells the number of
atoms present in a compound.
• Molar mass is expressed in grams per mole (g/mole)
which means that the molar mass is equivalent to a
mole of that substance.
