Onboarding Checklist for New Employees – Your First Month

Note: This checklist will walk you through the first month of the onboarding journey and outlines the
tasks to be taken by both you and your supervisor.

During your first month, you will be starting to get familiar with the culture, processes and your job
duties and expectations. As you are building your knowledge, your team and supervisor play a vital role
in your onboarding experience.

We know there is lots of learning and reading that happens in the first month, be sure to so pace
yourself and set aside time for learning.

On-Going Conversations
Continue to check-in with your supervisor (and/or buddy) both formally and informally to:
 Let them know how things are going
 Discuss priorities and expectations
 Review initial learning needs and how they can be met
☐  Request feedback on your progress and performance
 Celebrate accomplishments
 Ask any questions and get support if necessary
 Provide feedback on your onboarding experience

Resources
There is a lot to read, give yourself time, talk to your supervisor about prioritizing what you need to know now,
and spread the reading over the next few weeks. Remember you aren’t expected to know it all right away!

Familiarize yourself with the “culture” of the office and find out about any social norms (for example:
☐ coffee clubs, birthday celebrations, potluck lunches, recreational and health activities, social clubs, etc.)

☐ Learn about your team’s vision and direction

☐ Learn about the current issues and challenges of the ministry, branch, division/team

☐ Find out about the latest Work Environment Survey results for the Ministry and your Branch

☐ Find out about Ministry recognition (e.g. Ministry STARS Awards)

☐ Find out about the succession and leadership development initiatives in the Ministry
Learn about the Ministry’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural safety and reconciliation
☐ and removing barriers to accessibility

MyPerformance
Review MyPerformance and the process your team follows
☐  Discuss short-term work goals and learning goals in alignment with the MyPerformance cycle and
the probationary period
Create or update your MyPerformance Profile
☐  If you need assistance, refer to the MyPerformance Guide

Finance and Accounting


Find out about any applicable travel, expense approvals and reimbursement processes, signing
☐ authority, taxi card, travel card and purchasing card.
 Review Financial page on Health ePlace for more information

Get Connected
Get involved, network and continue to connect with team members, colleagues, clients and other
☐ stakeholders

☐ Check out the perks for BC Public Service employees at the Employee Discount Store

Health and Wellness


☐ As your supervisor about the Ministry’s Employee Liaison
Look into the health and wellness resources available to you including the Employee & Family
☐ Assistance Services (for you and your family) and Health and Well-being Workshops
Be aware of your own mental health during this transition and refer to the resources available. Look at
☐ taking the Here to Help Screen Self-test
