Review Questions: IT211 – Data communication: Assignment 4

1. What is the relationship between period and frequency?
Reverse as F = 1/T
2. How can a composite signal be decomposed into its individual
frequencies?
Using Softwares and Hardwares
3. Is the frequency domain plot of a voice signal discrete or continuous?
Continuous
Review Problems
1. Given the frequencies listed below, calculate the corresponding periods.
a. 24 Hz 1 - 1/24
b. 8 MHz 2 - 1 / 8 x 10^6 = 1.25x10^-7
c. 140 KHz 3 - 1/140 x 10^3 = 50/7
2. What is the phase shift for the following?
a. A sine wave with the maximum amplitude at time zero
Phase Shift = Pi / 2 = 180
b. A sine wave with maximum amplitude after 1/4 cycle
1/4 x 360 = 90

c. A sine wave with zero amplitude after 3/4 cycle and increasing
3/4 x 360 = 270

3. A periodic composite signal with a bandwidth of 2000 Hz is composed of

two sine waves. The first one has a frequency of 100 Hz with a maximum
amplitude of 20 V; the second one has a maximum amplitude of 5 V. Draw
the bandwidth.

4. What is the bit rate for each of the following signals?

a. A signal in which 1 bit lasts 0.001 s

Bit Rate = 1 / .001 = 1000BPS
b. A signal in which 1 bit lasts 2 ms
Bit Rate = 1 / 2x10^-2 = 50BPS
c. A signal in which 10 bits last 20 μs
Bit Rate = 10 / 20x10^-6 = 500000BPS

5. What is the bit rate for the signal in Fig

Bit Rate = 9 / 16x10^-9= 562500000 BPS

6. What is the bandwidth of the composite signal shown in Figure 3.37?

Bandwidth = Fh - Fl = 180 - 165 = 15

7. A non-periodic composite signal contains frequencies from 10 to 30 KHz.

The peak amplitude is 10 V for the lowest and the highest signals and is 30
V for the 20-KHz signal. Assuming that the amplitudes change gradually
from the minimum to the maximum, draw the frequency spectrum.

8. A file contains 2 million bytes. How long does it take to download this file
using a 56-Kbps channel? 1-Mbps channel?
1 - 2x10^6/ 10^3 = 2x10^3 Kb 2 - 2x10^6 / 10^6 = 2Mb
2x10^3 / 56 = 250/7 Second 2 / 1 = 2 Seconds
