Introduction

--This project seeks to find the effects of mining in the in parish of ST. Thomas. This is of great interest
to the research as he as hope of becoming a renewable energy specialist. Also this is of personal
interest as the researcher seek to find out what persons around the parish thinks about environmental
situations such as mining.this will help in future career as I may seek solutions that are not only

Preface

The purpose of this article is to alert persons of the dangers of mining and the effects it may have on
the demography and how we can solve them. This is intended to reach the environmental communities
and anyone who is concerned about the environment.

The researcher has written a newspaper article on the topic “The Effects Of Mining In The Parish Of
St Thomas” which seeks to enlighten persons on how mining can damage their environment and a few
way in which they can be solve. It makes reference to many bad mining practices. This article contains
many literary devices. One such device is the use of pun. The phrase “choke on that” after referring to
the effects of air pollution, which can mean literally choking on the air or meditate on what the
narrator is trying to say.

The piece The Effects Of Mining In Jamaica written by Leon Haley is a news paper article that

informs the reader about the bad effects of mining. It inform how mining affects the air, water, and
human lives. It also talks about how many companies can fix these problems. Out of the many
language indicators two included in the piece are: Dialectal variation and language registers.

In the passage The Effects Of Mining In Jamaica one language indicator used is Dialectal Variation.
Personas who used this language indicator is the narrator. The narrator switches from the acrolect to
the mesolect as he tries to ask popular questions that may arise during a conversation with a local or a
plebeian. Evidence of this is form terms such as “soun bad man ”and “yeah we knu, But i caan be all
that bad man” can prove of this language indicator existence.
Also language register are found in this passage as the narrator speaks in a somewhat formal way.
The language register switch between casual, informative/ consultative. The piece is considered casual
as it seen as though the narrator is having a conversation with someone. This is evident as statements
such as Yes,yes I know your probably asking,”but I caan be all that bad” such that this persona is
having a conversation. This piece can also be considered to be consultative as it gives information on
mining. This whole passage is informative.
With the aid of these language register , there are also literary devices that aid in bring out the best in
this piece. Literary devices in this piece such as pun, irony and contrast.
