1.2 IAEA OVERVIEW

scientific basis with the IAEA Task Force independent review.

The Task Force :
1. Was established under the authority of the IAEA Secretariat and
chaired by a senior IAEA official.
2. IAEA staff members in the Task Force will serve as the primary source for
the technical and regulatory expertise needed to complete the IAEA’s
review
3. 11 internationally recognized experts* are included.
(Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Korea, the
Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States and Viet Nam. )
*The Task Force members will not work in a national capacity but as part of an international team managed by the IAEA.

3 THREE COMPONENTS OF

Assessment of Review TEPCO’s implementation plan and supporting documentation.

4. STATEMENT OF THE IAEA
DIRECTOR GENERAL
“The Task Force’s findings from its first mission in February
2022 were considered in depth and have been reflected in
Japan’s revisions to the plan. The IAEA will continue its
impartial and science-based review of the proposed discharge
plan,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

”We the IAEA will also be able to ascertain that once discharge
of processed water goes into the Pacific Ocean, that is right
behind us, it will be done in full conformity with the
international standards and therefore it will not cause any
harm to the environment.”

SUMMARY
Under the IAEA's review, the Japanese
Government has committed to:
1. taking measures in accordance
with international standards and
practice,
2. fully taking into account the impact
on the environment as well as the
health and safety of people, and
3. placing transparency and
accountability to the
international community.
