INTRODUCTION
The Airbus A330 is a wide-body commercial airliner that utilizes a sophisticated hydraulic system to control
various aircraft components and systems. The hydraulic system is a critical part of the aircraft, providing
the necessary power to operate the landing gear, flaps, slats, brakes, and other key components.

The A330 hydraulic system is a complex network of hydraulic pumps, reservoirs, filters, valves, and
actuators. It is a closed-loop system that uses a special fluid to transmit power from the pumps to the
various components that require hydraulic power. The hydraulic system is powered by three independent
hydraulic pumps, two engine-driven pumps, and one electrically driven pump, providing redundancy and
backup capability.

The hydraulic system is controlled by a series of valves and actuators that are operated by the flight crew
using hydraulic control panels located in the cockpit. The system also includes a hydraulic accumulator,
which stores hydraulic fluid under pressure and provides emergency backup power in case of pump failure.

The A330 hydraulic system is designed to be reliable, efficient, and safe. It is subject to rigorous testing
and maintenance procedures to ensure that it operates as intended and meets all safety standards.
OPERATION
The A330 has three independent hydraulic systems: two main systems (Green and Yellow) and a backup
system (Blue). Each system has its own hydraulic reservoir, hydraulic pump, and hydraulic lines.

The hydraulic pumps are powered by the aircraft's engines and provide pressure to the hydraulic lines. The
hydraulic lines distribute the pressure to various components throughout the aircraft, such as the landing
gear, flaps, spoilers, and brakes.

The Green and Yellow hydraulic systems are normally used during normal flight operations, with the Blue
hydraulic system serving as a backup in case of a failure in one of the main systems. Each main system has
its own hydraulic pump, which is powered by a hydraulic motor that is driven by the respective engine.

In the event of a failure in one of the main hydraulic systems, the backup system can provide pressure to
critical components to allow the aircraft to continue flying safely until it can be repaired.

The A330 also has a hydraulic system that operates the aircraft's thrust reversers, which are used to slow
down the aircraft after landing. This system is separate from the main hydraulic systems and has its own
hydraulic pump.

Overall, the A330's hydraulic systems are designed to provide reliable and redundant pressure to critical
components throughout the aircraft, ensuring safe operation in the event of a failure in one of the systems.

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM MONITORING UNIT (HSMU)

The HSMU is for monitoring the hydraulic system. It processes the control of electric pumps, RAT
extension, both engine green hydraulic fire shutoff valve closure in a case of green reservoir low level,
hydraulic quantity indication correction of fluid temperature, tank overheat warning, fault light
illuminating logic and leak measurement valve.
COMPONENT FUNCTIONS

• Fuel Shutoff Valve(FSOV)

To intercept and block the fuel before it reaches the burner . This valves very useful to prevent fuel reach
engine in case of an engine fire.

• Engine Driven Pump(EDP)

The engine-driven pump provides the main hydraulic flow and pressure to the aircraft's hydraulic
components. It is typically used when the power goes off for a certain reason or situation.

Possibility of its can be malfunction:

i. The spline has wear.

ii. The pipeline broken

iii. The piston was jammed

iv. The engine fail caused by Foreign Object Damage (FOD)

• Hydraulic Pump

The A330 hydraulic pump functions to pressurize hydraulic fluid and power various systems such as the
landing gear, brakes, and flight controls.

• Reservoir

The A330 has three separate hydraulic systems, each with its own hydraulic fluid reservoir. The reservoir
stores hydraulic fluid that powers the system and helps to maintain the pressure and temperature of the
fluid. It ensures that there is always enough hydraulic fluid in the system and helps to dissipate heat
generated by the system. The reservoir is an essential part of the A330's hydraulic system, making sure
that it works properly.

• Actuator

In simple terms, an actuator in the A330 is a device that converts hydraulic pressure into mechanical
motion to control various parts of the airplane, such as the flaps, landing gear, and rudder.

• Filter

A filter is an important component of the hydraulic system in an aircraft like the A330. Its primary function
is to remove contaminants from the hydraulic fluid to ensure that it remains clean and free from debris
that can cause damage to the system. The filter works by trapping particles and impurities as the hydraulic
fluid passes through it, preventing them from circulating through the system. This helps to extend the life
of the hydraulic system components and maintain their performance. Regular maintenance and
replacement of the filter is necessary to keep the hydraulic system in optimal condition.
• Valves

Valves are critical components of the hydraulic system in an aircraft like the A330. They control the flow
and pressure of hydraulic fluid to various components and systems, including the landing gear, brakes,
flaps, and flight controls.

There are different types of valves used in the A330's hydraulic system, such as pressure relief valves, check
valves, and directional control valves.

Pressure relief valves regulate the pressure in the hydraulic system by opening and releasing fluid when
the pressure exceeds a set limit. Check valves ensure that hydraulic fluid flows in the correct direction and
prevent backflow, which can cause damage to the system. Directional control valves control the direction
of fluid flow and are used to operate the various hydraulic actuators.

Overall, valves play a crucial role in the proper functioning of the A330's hydraulic system, allowing for
precise control and efficient operation of the aircraft's various systems and components.

• Heat Exchanger

Keeps the fluid at the proper temperature.

• Hydraulic Fuses

Safety devices designed to automatically seal off a hydraulic line if the operating pressure becomes too
low.

• Leak Measurement Valve

It can be closed by operation of switches on the maintenance panel. The effect of closing these valves is
to shut off hydraulic supply to the primary flight controls.

• Accumulator (ACCU)

To take a specific amount of fluid under pressure from the hydraulic system and store it until it is
required within the system.

• Elect Pump

convert electrical energy into fluid pressure by using an electric motor to drive the pump. It operates on
ground (maintenance, towing and cargo handling).
BACKUP SYSTEM

• Alternate Hydraulic System.

The Airbus A330 hydraulic system contains an emergency backup system that is meant to provide hydraulic
power if the primary hydraulic system fails. This backup system is known as the Alternate Hydraulic System.

The Alternate Hydraulic System is designed to provide limited hydraulic power to certain critical systems,
including the landing gear, brakes, and flaps. The system is not intended to provide full hydraulic power to
all systems, but rather to enable the aircraft to land safely in the event of a hydraulic failure.

The system includes a dedicated hydraulic reservoir, which is filled with hydraulic fluid and can be used to
supply hydraulic power to the various components in case of a primary hydraulic system failure. The
system also includes a backup hydraulic accumulator, which stores hydraulic fluid under pressure and can
be used to provide emergency power to the landing gear and brakes in case of a total hydraulic system
failure.

• Ram Air Turbine (RAT)

Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is a small turbine that is installed in an aircraft and used as an alternate or
emergency hydraulic or electrical power source. This RAT is generating the power from the airstream based
on the speed of the aircraft on air. This RAT is use when the event like loss of hydraulic systems in air
happen.

When in normal conditions the RAT stowed in compartment in the fuselage or wing. It can deploy
automatically or manually.
