A relation can be presented in many ways:

• Set of Ordered Pairs

• Rule/ Function

Four types of relation:

:one to one
: many to one
:one to many
: many to many
(Out of this four, only one to one relation and many to one relation represents a function)

One on one function (also known as injective)

- denotes the mapping of two sets.

- One-to-one is also written as 1-1

A function g is one-to-one if every element of the range of g corresponds to exactly one element of the domain
of h.

A function f is one-to-one if it never takes the same value twice or f(x1) ≠ f(x2) whenever x1 ≠ x2 . That

is, the same y-value is never paired with two different x-values.

real life applications of one to on functions

1. The relation pairing an SSS member to his or her SSS number = one-on-one
- Each SSS member is assigned a unique SSS number. Thus, a relation is a function. Further, two
different members cannot be assigned the same SSS number. Thus, the function is one-to-one.
2. The relation pairing a real number to its square = not a one-on-one function
- Each real number has a unique perfect square. Thus, the relation is a function. However, two
different real numbers such as 2 and -2 may have the same square. Thus, the function is not
one-to-one.
3. The relation pairing a person to his or her citizenship = not one-on-one
- The relation is not a function because a person can have dual citizenship
Situation 1. Suppose the Kidzoona charge in an hour play is Php 300.
Your baby brother wants to play in the said amusement.

Questions:
How much will you pay if your baby brother will play 1 hour? 2 hours? 3hours?
How about 5 hours?

If the brother will play 1 hour the sister will pay Php 300, while if he
will play 2 hours his sister will pay Php 600, moreover if he will play for
3 hours they will pay Php 900. If 5 hours, that will be Php 1,500.

2. Based on your answer in item 1, write an ordered pair in the form (time, amount).
Ordered pairs are: (1, 300), (2, 600), (3, 900), (5, 1500)

3. Make a rule/ function that represents the given relation.

Let x - be the number of hours playing at Kidzoona

f(x) – be the amount total charge/amount to be paid

f(x) = 300x
4. The relation is a one-to-one function since there exactly one element of f(x) in every element of x.

5. The total amount to be paid depends on the time consumed playing in Kidzoona.

A simple way to determine if a given graph is that of a one-to-one function is by using

: Horizontal line test
-a function is one-on-one if each horizontal line does not intersect the graph at more than one point.
-A horizontal line that will intersect the graph at one point
-used to determine whether a function is injective (one-on-one)

The vertical and horizontal line tests

-All functions satisfy the vertical line test. All one-to-one functions satisfy both the vertical and
horizontal line tests
