For

BOX CULVERT
1.0 Introduction This method statement is to describe the outline construction methods for
the installation of Precast Box Culvert structure of size 3.0 m x 2.4m across
Lebuhraya Iskandar excavation.

1.1 Type of Plant Machineries

Small tools

Manpower

Operator 6 persons

General Workers 6 persons

Project Manager 1 person

Safety Supervisor 1 person

Survey Team 2 person

1.2 Sequence of Works Preparation Works

a) This method statement applies to all personnel involved in the construction

and supervision of the works including the Consultant site staff required for
inspection and approval of the works.
b) Material for permanent construction such as concrete mix and
reinforcement etc shall be submitted in the form of samples, technical
brochures and all approvals in writing to be obtained prior commencement of
works.

c) The invert level of the box culvert at inlet and outlet points shall be
determined using survey equipment and marked on site at timber peg for
easy reference.

d) The survey team shall ensure that all setting out works are in order. Survey
filed data for later reproduction of as-built drawings shall be kept and
documented by the supervisor.

e) Backfilling materials to be used as bedding or backfilling (crusher run, sand)

shall be stockpiled at strategic area before laying works commencing.

Traffic Management

a) The installation of traffic safety devices shall follow the approved Traffic
Management Plan. The devices and signboard must comply with the
specifications.

b) Prior to the commencement of physical works, traffic management and all

lane closure programmes shall be checked and approved by Bahagian
Pengangkutan Bandar, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur before the
construction activities can be commenced.

c) The Traffic Team member must wear suitable clothing to ensure they can
be seen clearly by the road users.

d) Flagmen to be stationed at both ends of the road closure to guide the road
users and to control the flow of traffic.

Cutting of Road Surface

a) The first step is to demarcate the excavation area. Lines are drawn on the
road surface to mark the width of trench.

b) The trench width will be slightly wider (ie 600mm on each side) than the
width of the Box Culvert to be installed works. This will be working space
during laying of Box Culvert and also for compaction for backfilling material.

c) A breaker will be used to cut the top surface of the road along the mark
lines to ensure the cut section will be neat in appearance and with less
damage to the adjacent road during the excavation work.

Excavation

a) Prior to the excavation works, the area shall probably mark as a guide to
control the longitudinal alignment of the culvert crossing.

b) The excavator shall be used for excavation works, followed immediately

with the bedding preparation and also laying of Box Culvert. The length of
excavated trench shall not more than 10m. This to avoid excavation wall from
collapsing and to control the water level inside the trench

d) The supervisor must monitor the excavation work and check the level from
time to time to avoid over excavation and to ensure the correct gradient of
the laying work is achieved.

e) Water pump of suitable capacity shall be operating to keep the excavated

trench essentially dry.

f) The excavated soil shall be stockpiled nearby and shall be used as backfilling
material if found suitable. Unsuitable soil shall be removed from site as soon
as possible.

Preparation for foundation

a) The cut shall be to the level specified or indicated in the engineer’s drawing

b) The foundation shall be prepared as shown in the drawings and joint

inspection with the consultant site staff shall be carried out and recorded.

e) Dewatering by water pumps may be required to enable a dry surface for

working.

f) When the excavation level is reached, the soil shall be leveled and
compacted to ensure the strong support layer.

g) Crusher run (hardcore) shall be placed, leveled and compacted as bedding

to support the box culvert.
h) The supervisor must check the thickness of the compacted hardcore layer
and also the gradient to ensure when culvert was installed, water will flow in
the intended direction.

i) Where lean concrete is required, it should be placed immediately after the

foundation preparation has been completed to protect it from inclement
weather.

Installation of Box Culvert

a) The box culvert shall be offloaded using mobile crane and lifted up by a
spreader beam with lifting cables and properly tie up to weep holes.

b) The box culvert drains are to be stacked on level and laid on prepared base.
It is laid from the downstream end with sockets facing upstream to receive
the next box culvert to be laid.

c) The joints of box culvert are closed by pulling against the box culvert
previously laid.

d) The gaps between box culverts shall be filled up with cement-sand mortar.

e) Backfill and compact with suitable earth layer by layer up to the top of the
trench according to the specification. Avoid use of heavy vibratory equipment
next to side walls
