THE ACCOUNT OF PIGAFETTA

Antonio Pigafetta (1491–1531) was an Italian scholar and traveler who was born

in Vicenza, Italy. Prior to joining Ferdinand Magellan's expedition to the Maluku Islands,

which was under by Emperor Charles V and on which Magellan was killed and Pigafetta

was injured in the Philippines, Pigafetta served on board battleships of the Knights of

Rhodes, traveled to Spain with the papal nuncio, Monsignor Chieregati. One of the 18

men who managed to complete the voyage was Pigafetta, who arrived back in Spain in

1522. Pigafetta assisted Magellan and documented his journeys in a journal which is still

in existence that contains important details about Magellan's voyage.

On one of the most incredible global exploration expeditions, Antonio Pigafetta

played a significant role. The significance of his own expedition stems primarily from the

fact that he participated in the first globe circumnavigation between 1519 and 1522 and

was able to complete it following Ferdinand Magellan's murder. He left a detailed account

of the journey in the Report of the First Trip Around the World, a lost manuscript that was

later discovered in 1797 and is now regarded as some of the most significant documentary

evidence relating to the geographical discoveries of that time. One of the greatest

accomplishments in the history of maritime exploration and discovery was his own

account of the first circumnavigation of the globe.

Pigafetta heard about Magellan's journey, and he asked for and was given

permission to join it. He wanted to learn more about the world. Five ships in Magellan's

fleet lifted anchor from Seville and set sail for the Canary Islands, the coast of Africa, and

across the equator. From there, they sailed towards the coast of Brazil. They continued

until October 21, 1520, when they discovered the strait that bears Magellan's name. They

eventually made it to the Philippines, where they got to know the locals, who were friendly

and welcomed them as guests in the king's palace. Magellan's translator and the king of

Cebu set up a trap that killed more Europeans after the rest of the group had escaped

and gone back to Spain. But at this time, their desire to get back to Spain forced them to

leave as soon as possible, despite the fact that they could make money from trade and

have positive interactions with other people.

Pigafetta has the Excellency to record or document one of the most important

events in our history which is the first encounter between Filipinos and Europeans.

Pigafetta`s work gives a great impact on dilatation of our knowledge about our history

about the Philippines and Europe encounter that even it in 500 years later it is still a

reference for historians and each and every one of us who`ll study the Philippines during

pre-Hispanic times. On the video documentation about what happened during the

encounter of Magellan and Lapu-Lapu, there are a lot of historians have been interviewed

and give their own knowledge about what happened on the encounter. What really

matters is it really happened and it carved an important role in our history up until the

present times.

Events such as this one, the encounter of Magellan and Lapu-Lapu is one of the

most important things we must know or it is commonly known by us, Filipinos but we

wouldn`t be knowledgeable about such, if weren`t because of Antonio Pigafetta`s records

about the event. The records of this encounter are one of the proofs that history really

matters and it really plays an important role in our lives because history defines us by the

means of our culture and traditions and it is the root of everything we have and of who we

are right now.
