The issuance of the 1000 South Korean Won banknotes commenced in 2007 and remains in
circulation to this day. These banknotes, issued by the Bank of Korea, feature the portrait of Yi
Hwang, a prominent Confucian scholar who wrote under the pseudonym Toegye and was also
known as Gyeongho. Yi Hwang was a contemporary of Yi I, who is featured on the 5000 won
note. Notably, Yi Hwang established the Dosan Seowan, a private academy dedicated to the
practice and study of Neo-Confucianism. The reverse of the 1000 KRW bill showcases the
painting ‘Gyesangjeonggeodo’ by Jeong Seon, a masterpiece displayed in Dosan Seowan. This
banknote thus serves as a tribute to Yi Hwang's intellectual contributions and cultural heritage.

The 5000 won banknote of the Republic of Korea showcases Yi I, known by his pen name Yulgok.
Notably, he is the son of Shin Saimdang, the distinguished figure depicted on the 50,000 won
banknote. Beyond being a celebrated Confucian scholar akin to his mother, Yi I played an active
role in politics, contributing significantly to the incorporation of Confucian principles and values
into the governance of South Korea. The reverse side of the 5000 KRW note features a painting
of insects and plants, skillfully created by Yulgok's mother, Shin Saimdang. This banknote not
only pays homage to Yi I's intellectual and political contributions but also highlights the artistic
talents of his renowned mother.
