EMERGENCY DRUGS IN DENTAL PRACTICE

DRUG INITIAL ADULT DOSE INDICATION

1. Oxygen 100% inhalation -Almost any medical emergency


2. Nitrous oxide ~35%, inhalation -Angina like pain unresponsive to nitroglycerin
3. Epinephrine 0.1 mg i.v., OR 0.3-0.5 mg i.m. -Anaphylaxis
0.1 mg i.v., OR 0.3-0.5 mg i.m. - Asthma unresponsive to albuterol / salbutamol
1 mg i.v. - Cardiac arrest
4. Nitroglycerin 0.3 - 0.4 mg sublingual -Pain of angina
5. Antihistamine -Allergic reactions
(diphenhydramine OR 25-50 mg i.v., i.m.
chlorpheniramine) 10-20 mg i.v., i.m.
6. Albuterol / salbutamol 2 sprays inhalation -Asthmatic bronchospasm
7. Aspirin 160-325 mg -Myocardial infarction
8. Glucagon 1 mg i.m. -Hypoglycemia in unconsious patient
9. Atropine 0.5 mg i.v. OR i.m. -Clinically significant bradycardia
10. Hydrocortisone 5mg i.v., OR 10-25 mg i.m. -Adrenal insufficiency
5mg i.v., OR 10-25 mg i.m. Recurrent anaphylaxis
11. Naloxone 0.1 mg i.v -Reversal of opioid overdose
12. Diazepam. 5-10mg i.v. -Status epilepticus
13. 25% Dextrose 100ml i.v. -low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia)
14. Sodium bicarbonate 8.4% 25ml -severe metabolic acidosis in cardiac arrest
