CASS

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

WHY DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT?
CASS stands for Cumulative Assessment. What does cumulative assessment mean?
This is a mark made up of the marks achieved for your formative assessments (Tests, Assignments,
Parts, Tasks, ICE etc) for which a mark is allocated (also referred to as a graded assessment).
assignment.

CASS IS USED FOR TWO PURPOSES:

1. Gaining access to the summative assessment
2. Contributing to the final mark for the unit of learning (module or course)

EASY, RIGHT?
HOW WILL CASS AFFECT MY STUDIES AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
You will need CASS to gain entry into your summative assessment of a module within your
qualification. You will need a weighted average of 40% for your CASS mark if there are three or
more elements that make up your CASS mark. The CASS mark forms part of the total module
mark. A CASS mark of 39% will be condoned so that you may attempt the summative assessment.

BUT WHEN DOES CASS NOT APPLY?

• Where there are two or fewer formative marks
• Portfolios of Evidence and Dissertation
• Short Learning Programmes
• Special Exams and Discontinuation examinations
• If the modules are the last two outstanding modules for successful completion of the qualification
• (please see provisions for special exams or section 27.2 in the assessment strategy and policy)
• Other modules for which this exception is stipulated such as the Brand Activations and Challenges.
• If the module is being discontinued (Please see the provisions for Phasing out modules or section
25 in the assessment strategy and policy)

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE MET CASS FOR EXAM ENTRY?

• CASS is available in a staggered approach as your formative assessment results are released
• Your CASS result will change as formative results are released
• Your final CASS result will reflect at least 5 working days before the summative assessment
• Ensure that all your formative assessment results are reflecting before confirming that you
have met the CASS requirement for a module
• Once all your formative assessments results are released, your Obtained Percentage should
be 40% or higher

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE NOT MET CASS?

If you have not met the requirements for entry into the summative assessment of a module, you
will have failed that module so please remember to attempt all your formatives!
