Geometric sequences

Starter challenge

● Draw a square with an area of 16 cm2 and label its vertices


as A, B, C, and D.
● Draw a new square by connecting the midpoints of the
sides of square ABCD
● Continue this pattern until you have drawn a total of six
squares.
● Find the area of each square and examine your results;
comment on any patterns that you notice.
● Predict the area of the 10th square and check your
prediction.

Each time a new square is drawn, the area of the bigger


square is divided into two equal parts.

Thus, the areas of the squares form the following sequence


16, 8, 4, 2, 1, …

which can be described as un = 1/2 × un−1

This is an example of a geometric sequence .
