Abstract

This study reveals the results of an autobiographical study of students in the

Laguna Colleges questions regarding two different educational models

caused by the COVID-19 pandemic: face-to-face and e-learning. The aim is to

discover their perceptions and opinions about their experiences during the

learning process and what they have experienced during this global

emergency and period of home confinement. The sample is made up of 100

Respondents among grade 11 students from the Laguna Colleges. 45% of

males and 55% of females participated, for a total of 100% who participated in

the study. Our results showed that there is no significant difference between

two variables. The implications of this study could be used to promote the

different experiences of the students.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

SARS-CoV-2, also known as 2019-nCoV, is the novel coronavirus that

causes this disease, which has drawn attention from all over the world due to

rising infection rates and the need to find a cure and flatten the transmission

curve (Guo, March 13, 2020). Cough, fever, and shortness of breath are

among the symptoms, which can be spread by close contact with an infected

person who coughs, sneezes, or releases respiratory droplets or aerosols

(Muhammad Adnan Shereen, 2020). Although it affects people of all ages,

the most vulnerable groups include adults, children, and those with underlying

medical issues. (WHO, 2020b). Currently, illnesses and fatalities are both on

the rise globally.

In order to avoid the infection, containment, contract tracing, self-

isolation, social distancing, the wearing of face masks, improved health care

systems, hand-washing, and surface cleaning are recommended by the World

Health Organization (WHO, 2020b). The fight against the COVID-19

pandemic had far-reaching consequences, affecting nearly every sector of

humanity. These have resulted in widespread disruptions such as the closure

of schools (Russell M Viner, april 6,2020) and the global economic recession

(Nuno, March 22, 2020). One of the most affected sectors by COVID-19 was

the educational sector. We need to live with the Disease as viruses are

constantly evolving (Tria, 2020). The COVID-19 PANDEMIC still exists today.

However, scientists are still on their way in studying and developing vaccines
and presently in Clinical trials (Cortegiani et al., Dong et al., & Gautret et al.,

2020) for almost two PANDEMIC months, most countries around the world

have temporarily closed educational institutions to contain the spread of the

COVID-19 pandemic and reduce infections. This closure has affected more

than 1.2 billion learners worldwide with more than 28 million learners in the

Philippines. Philippine Response like community lockdown and community

quarantines in several countries have led students and teachers to study and

work from some which led to the delivery of online learning platforms

(Crawford, 2020). However, the implementation of online learning posed

different risks, problems, and challenges to both teachers and students,

especially in higher education institutions (HEIs) ( (Wei, 07 April 2020). Since

public and private schools were closed to protect the health of learners and

educators, teaching had to be performed remotely with the use of modular

and digital platforms.

In a statement on May 8, Education Leonor Briones said that the Basic

Education - Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) of the Department of

Education's major response and commitment to protecting the health, safety,

and well-being of learners, teachers, and personnel. Briones added that

education must continue under the health protocols set by the Department of

Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) (Montemayor, December

31, 2020,).Many students acknowledged that the absence of instructor-

student contact was the biggest drawback of remote learning when the

modular system was originally put into place. Because there were no

opportunities for students to speak with their teacher in person, they were

unable to communicate nonverbally and ask questions or hold conversations

(Smith S.-H. H., Effectiveness of Personal Interaction in a Learner-Centered

Paradigm Distance, August 2013). Some of the students are copying

someone else’s work using technology and then submitting it as their own

(2015).

Statement of the Problem

We, the researchers would like to explore the Transition of Modular

Distance Learning to face to face modality among Grade 11 Students in

Laguna Colleges. We sought to seek the answer to the following problems:

1. What is the demographic profile of Grade 11 students in terms of:

1.1Family Income

1.2 Family Status

2. What are the effects of Modular Distance Learning (MDL) in terms of?

2.1 Interaction between the teacher and the Learners

2.2 Online courses are often more individualized

2.3 Students Predominantly Asynchronous

3. What are the Impacts of the Face-to-Face Modality in the Students

engagement Academics in terms of:

3.1. Physical

3.1.2Social

3.1.3Emotional

3.1.4Interactive

4. Is there a significant difference in the modular Distance Learning (MDL)

and Face to Face Modality in the Academic Performance of Students?

H0 - The null hypothesis in statistics states that there is no difference between

groups or no relationship between variables.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the Impact of Transitioning from Modular

Distance Learning (MDL) to Face-to-Face (F2F) Modality on the Academic

Performance of Grade 11 Students. This study is limited to 134 Respondents

from Laguna Colleges

Significance of the Study

This research is mainly conducted to know what is the possible impact of

transition from Modular Distance to Face to Face. The study is beneficial to

the following persons:

To the School Administrator: This research would help to supervise

the teaching staff in how they manage their learning approach to their

students and inform the school personnel to provide help with the student’s'

priority and needs, especially in the new normal learning system.

To the Teachers: This study could help with additional information

related to the teaching approach of the teacher with their students

To the Parents: This research could help the parents be enlightened about

what their children are being taught and learning in school.

To the Students: This study could help the students because it would

help them to be open or actualize their problems on learning their lesson in

school.
To the Researcher: This study could help us to know what is the

possible impact of The Transition of Modular Distance Learning to Face-to-

Face Modality among grade 11 Students in Laguna Colleges.

Definition of Terms:

For a clearer in better understanding of this study, the terms are

defined operationally and conceptually.

Face-to-face refers to, the instructor and the students of a nonprofit

educational institution being in a place devoted to instruction, where teaching

and learning take place at the same time. In this study, an instructional

method where course content and learning materials are taught in person to a

group of students was used. This allows for a live interaction between a

learner and an instructor.

Transition refers to, the end-to-end set of processes that lead to the

successful development and implementation of a research idea, technology,

or observation in an ongoing and useful application (operations). In this study,

Distance learning refers to, involves physical separation between

teachers and students, using technology for communication. In this study,

involves students using printed self-learning modules and digitally accessible

electronic devices for learning.
