SKILLS THAT MUST BE ACQUIRED BY

ENGLISH
PHONICS
Children will review the letters sounds, to be able to read and write fluently, work with
tracing of letters, identify direction and spaces, letter names, action, formation, blending
and sounding.
- Children must know each letter sound.
- Recognize the order of the letter-sound groups.
- Know the 7 letter-sound groups.
- Letter Names: be able to connect the name of the letter to the correct sound.
- Use of capital and lower case letters.
- Blending: children must be able to blend short, phonetic words as well as some unknown
regular words.
- Be able to silently blend words in their head to promote fluency in reading.
- Digraphs: ai, oa, ie, ee, or, ng, oo, OO, ch, sh, th, qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar.

Alternative ways in which some of the vowel sound can be written.

TRICKY WORDS
Learning to Spell Tricky Words
Students will review words to make it easier to spell and write them, by teaching the
children to observe the irregularities, and by giving them techniques and simple rules, so
they can be more accurate in their spelling.
BLUE GROUP
The, he, she, me, we, be, I was, to, do, are, all

YELLOW GROUP

You, your, come, some, said, here, there, they, go, no, so

Children should learn how to spell the Tricky Words after they have been taught to read them.
Using techniques as look, copy, cover, write and check.
DICTATION
- Dictation of letters and words.
- Use of Capital and lowercase letters.
- Developing independent writing: children must be able to word building, listening for the
sounds and writing the appropriate letters.

READING
- Children should be able to identify:
- Main idea.
- Text structure: Title, Author, Characters, Setting and Plot (begging, middle and end).
- Use of a web map to summarize.

Pupils will start reading stories; children will gain confidence and will be able to enjoy
storybooks independently.

GRAMMAR
Sentences
-Parts of a sentences.
- Subject and Predicate
- Common Sentences
- Questions
- Exclamation

Nouns
-Names of people, animal, places and things.
- Identify nouns in a sentence.
