ENHANCING EMOTIONS

EMOTIONS: AN INTRODUCTION-
We all have emotions or the presence of emotional
intelligence within us. Emotions are mental states brought on
by neurophysiological changes, variously associated with
thoughts, feelings, behavioural responses, and a degree of
pleasure or displeasure.
In other words, emotions are conscious mental reactions
(such as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as strong
feelings usually directed toward a specific object and typically
accompanied by physiological and behavioural changes in the
body.
Emotion can be of different types. It is not necessary that a
person will feel a specific emotion all the time. Emotion is
dynamic; hence, feeling happy at one instance and feeling sad
at the other is normal.
Based on this note, emotions are of two types; positive
emotions and negative emotions.
A GLIMPSE ON POSITIVE EMOTIONS-
Positive emotions doesn’t just mean feeling happy all the time. A range of
other emotions can also increase focus and success and, over time, improve
student wellbeing. The broaden-and build theory of positive emotions suggests
that all positive emotions lead to broadened repertoires of thoughts a id
actions and that broadening helps build resources that contribute to future
success.
Positive emotions include:
• Joy
• Amusement
• Hope
• Pride
• Love
• Compassion
• Interest
• Gratitude
• Satisfaction
• Serenity
• Awe

Positive emotions- signal flourishing. In fact, positive emotions also

produce flourishing. Moreover, they do so not simply within the
present, pleasant moment but over the long term as well. The take-
home message is that positive emotions are worth cultivating, not
just as end states in themselves but also as a means to achieving
psychological growth and improved wellbeing over time. When we
experience positive emotions, it signals that we engage in actions or
activities that align with our values. They also suggest that the
experience is meeting our needs.
Negative emotions- also have an intuitively adaptive value. In
an instant, they narrow other thought action repertoire to
those of fight or flight that promote our survival in life
threatening situations.

Even amidst overwhelming negativity in almost all

dimensions of human life in the present era, a ray of hope is
that relentless attempt to be a good communicator
generating positive emotions in self and others can yield the
desired result. It can go a long way out by cultivating the
habit of being a good communicator. This is a matter of
attitude and not money – caring words, listening with all
attention, using a calm tone of voice, looking in the eyes, a
smile and a genuine concern for wellbeing of the
communicatee are all what are needed.
CONCLUSION-

In today’s date, many people throughout the world face

hardships and problems due to many negative emotions in
our challenging environment. Every emotion has some
purpose. We should learn to face every challenge in our life
and we can definitely move towards enhancing positive
emotions.
