CHAPTER 4: THE COLOR GUARD

1. What is the role and function of the color guard?


It gives the illusion that there is a bigger and more eloquent band.
2. In a novice or developing color guard, what piece of equipment should be
used solely?
Only flags should be used in a novice color guard.
3. Why is a color guard specialist essential to teach the guard on a daily basis
Chances are the band director has little to no experience in color guard, along
with the fact that he or she will have no time to focus on only the color guard.

CHAPTER 5: THE MARCHING PROGRAM

1. Describe the importance of marching fundamentals and a daily marching


routine
This is essential because of the performance aspect of it. Not only does the
band have to sound good, but as importantly should the band look good. Anyone can
tell whether the line or formation of students is crooked or off.
2. Write a short description (a few words) for each term:
a. Attention -Basic standing position
b. Horns Up -Bring instruments to the playing position
c. Horns Down -Bring instruments to attention
d. Dress Right/Left/Center -Check the straightness of lateral and vertical
lines
e. Mark Time -Marching in place
f. Halt -stopping all movement
g. Forward March -Move forward
h. Backward March -Move Backward
i. Slides - instruments facing the front field as feet are pointed to end zones
j. Crabstep - Percussion method that moves side to side while facing front
k. Clean -to make more precise
l. Rank - A group of 3 or more members side to side.
m. File -a line of individuals
n. 8 to 5 -8 steps for 5 yards
o. 16 to 5 -16 steps for 5 yards

CHAPTER 5: CAN’t TEACH WHAT YOU DON’T POSSESS


3. In two sentences, describe a typical Coach Wooden Practice.
They were run at an exciting fast pace, allowing for the maximum amount of
efficiency and instruction to take place over the practice session. Wooden would never
change something that worked and corrected anything he saw wrong.
4. What stood out most to educational researchers about how Wooden delivered
information during practice?
He packed an incredible amount of information into one practice rehearsal. He
also exclusively used positive/educational reinforcement.
5. According to Coach Wooden, what three types of conditioning are essential for
success? Please describe each type.
Physical - Players have to take care of themselves by getting the correct amount
of sleep and eating well to give practice their all.

Moral - Wooden always told his students to do their best, regardless of the outcome.

Mental - He showed students how to control emotions, as the other players, the crowd,
and the score can easily affect your gameplay if you let emotions take over.
6. Describe Coach Wooden’s approach to teaching fundamentals. According to
Wooden, what is the purpose of being fundamentally sound?
It is so that individual creativity and imagination can thrive.
7. Describe Wooden’s Unique approach to team spirit.
Wooden did not choose the best players, but rather the players that worked well
together and completed their job on the court well. The full potential was found in teams
with great communication.
8. According to Wooden Mistakes are usually caused by lack of what?
Mistakes were usually caused by a lack of basic fundamentals.
