Friction
Motion is an everyday part of life. Without it, no work could be done. Forces acting on an
object may be balanced or unbalanced. Force gives energy to the object which can either set
it in motion, or change its motion in any way. Motion happens because of forces acting on
an object. Some forces act only if objects touch.
Example:
1. When you use your hands to push a heavy cart across the floor, your hands and the
cart touch.
2. You push your foot on the floor to move a skateboard forward.
3. Pull the door of the refrigerator to open it.
4. Press on the keys of the keyboard of a computer to type words.
5. When pushing the box, the underside surface of the box is in contact with the surface
of the floor.

Friction as Force

When you walk on the floor, friction acts as breaks to your foot. It acts against the floor and
enables you to step forward, backward and stop whenever you want to. Friction is also the
reason why any ball across the ground slows down after some time.

The force acts in the opposite direction to the way an object wants to move. This force
slows down the movement on certain surfaces. It also stops or resists motion in some
instances.

I. Study the pictures below. Identify whether the illustrations show a PUSH or a PULL
to move the given objects or persons. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
II. Activity: Roll and Stop
In this activity, you will need any round object available at home like a ball, a
tin can, or a tomato and the floor.

Get the ball or any available round object and put it on the floor. Push the ball
gently to allow it to roll on the floor, as shown in the figure below. Observe the
movement of the ball.
III. Directions: Read the following items carefully and tell whether the statements are True or
False. write True if the statement is correct and False if the statement is incorrect.

________1. Friction acts in a direction the same as the direction of the object’s motion.

________2. Friction occurs when the surfaces of the two objects rub against each other.

________3. Friction causes moving objects to stop.

________4. Friction is produced by a single object.

________5. Friction opposes motion of objects.
