Manual on how to use the present perfect in English

Introduction

The present perfect is a verb tense in English that is used to express actions that have occurred in the
past but have a connection with the present. For example, we can use the present perfect to talk about:

Experiences we have had:

I have been to Mexico
Things we have learned:
I have learned Spanish.
Things we have accomplished:
I have finished my homework.

Structure

The structure of the present perfect is as follows:

Subject + have/has + past participle of the verb

Examples:

I have eaten.
She has read.
We have gone.

Negative form

The negative form of the present perfect is formed by negating the verb auxiliary "have".

Examples:

I have not eaten.

She has not read.
We have not gone.

Interrogative form

The interrogative form of the present perfect is formed by placing the verb auxiliary "have" before the
subject.

Examples
:
Have I eaten?
Has she read?
Have we gone?

WH QUESTION

Wh-word + have/has + subject + verb + past participle + ?

Examples

 When have you seen her?

 What have you done today?
 Who has eaten my cake?

In wh questions, the wh-word is placed at the beginning of the sentence, followed by

the auxiliary “ have “or ”has, depending on the subject. Then, the subject, the past
participle verb, and finally the question mark are placed.
Wh-words are interrogative words that are used to elicit specific information. The most
common are:
 Who (¿quién?)
 What (¿qué?)
 When (¿cuándo?)
 Where (¿dónde?)
 Why (¿por qué?)
 How (¿cómo?)

Examples

Who has eaten my cake? (¿Quién se ha comido mi pastel?)

What have you done today? (¿Qué has hecho hoy?)
When have you seen her? (¿Cuándo la has visto?)
Where have you been? (¿Dónde has estado?)
Why have you been late? (¿Por qué has llegado tarde?)
How have you been feeling? (¿Cómo te has sentido?)

The present perfect is used to express a variety of meanings, including:

 Actions that began in the past and continue into the present.
For example:

I have lived in Mexico for 10 years.

 Actions that occurred recently.
