The Motions of the

Earth
Objectives
ü
Describe the different seasons in
the Philippines.
ü
Differentiate between rotation
and revolution and describe the
effects of Earth’s motion.
A globe is a model of Earth. It
shows where the different
countries and the cities are
located and the landmasses and
bodies of water on Earth.
The size and shape of the
features found on a globe is
proportional to their actual
size. The globe also shows
how Earth rotates on its axis.
As you know that the earth has
two types of motions, namely;
q
Rotation
q
Revolution.
ROTATION
The globe is tilted on its axis
and can be turned around.
Like the globe, Earth spins on
its axis.
Earth rotates at a speed of
approximately 1675 km/h. The
direction of rotation of Earth
depends on the position of the
observer.
When observed from
Earth’s North Pole, the
direction of rotation is
counterclockwise.
However, if the observer
is on the South Pole, the
direction of rotation is
clockwise.
One complete rotation of
Earth on its axis takes about
24 hours. This is called a
solar day.
The second motion of the
earth around the sun in its
orbit is called revolution. It
takes 365¼ days (one year) to
revolve around the sun.
We consider a year as
consisting of 365 days only
and ignore six hours for the
sake of convenience.
Season of Earth
The tilt of Earth’s axis is the
primary reason for the
occurrence of seasons in the
planet.
Season of Earth
the movement of Erath
around the sun also
contributes to the changing
seasons on Earth.
Four Seasons of the
Earth
Seasons in the Philippines
The Philippines experience
only two seasons. This is
because the philippines is
located in the northern
tropical zone, which is near
the equator.
DRY SEASON
ü
It occurs from November to
April. This is the period
when there is low rainfall.
WET SEASON
The rest of the year
experience rainy period. The
rainy seasons starts in
mAy/June and lasts till
October.
Solar and Lunar Eclipses
What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs any time something passes
in front of the Sun, blocking its light. This can
be the Earth or the Moon.
An eclipse is the casting of a
shadow of one celestial body on
the surface of another. The Earth’s
shadow creates a lunar eclipse; the
Moon’s shadow creates a solar
eclipse.
