STRENGTH OF MATERIALS: PRELIM SAMPLE PROBLEMS

LESSONS:
SIMPLE STRESS

 NORMAL STRESS
1. NORMAL TENSILE STRESS
2. NORMAL COMPRESSIVE STRESS
 SHEAR STRESS
 BEARING STRESS

1. Determine the actual normal stress produced in the cord system shown if the cross sectional
area of each cord is 100mm2.

100mm2

45o 30o

Solution:
1. Consider free body diagram of 1000N

∑Fy= 0
Tc= -1000n=N =0
= 1000N
σC=F/A= 1000N/100mm2
= 10mpa
2. CONSIDER FBD OF JOINT O
∑Fx= 0 ∑Fy= 0
TA cos 45 + Tb cos 30=0 TA sin 45 +TB sin 30-100=0 TB
TA= Tb cos 30 cos 30
cos 45
cos 45
TA= 896.58N
TB= 732.05N

σA = TB= 896.58N
100mm2
σA = 8.97 Mpa

σB = TB= 732.05N
100mm2
σB = 7.32 Mpa
2. A rod is composed of an aluminum section rigidly attached between steel and bronze
sections, as shown in Fig. P-107. Axial loads are applied at the positions indicated. If P = 3000
lb and the cross sectional area of the rod is 0.5 in2, determine the stress in each section.

SOLUTION:
For steel:
σstAst = Pst
σst(0.5) = 12
σst=24 ksi

For aluminum:
σalAal = Pal
σal (0.5) = 12
σal = 24 ksi

For bronze:
σbrAbr = Pbr
σbr(0.5) = 9
σbr = 18 ksi
3. A 12-inches square steel bearing plate lies between an 8-inches diameter wooden post and a
concrete footing as shown. Determine the maximum value of the load P if the stress in wood is
limited to 1800 psi and that in concrete to 650 psi.

SOLUTION:
1. Consider Wood Post

For wood:
Pw = σwAw
Pw = 1800[14π(82)]
Pw = 90477.9lb

For concrete:
Pc = σcAc
Pc = 650(122)
Pc = 93600lb

For safe load P,

P = 90478lb
4. Compute the shearing stress in the pin at B for the member supported as shown. The pin
diameter is 20 mm.

SOLUTION:
1. ΣMC = 0
0.25RBV=0.25(40sin35O) + 0.2(40cos350)

RBV = 49.156kN

ΣFH = 0
RBH = 40cos35O
RBH = 32.766kN

2. Consider Pin B

RB = √ RBH2+RBV2 RBH = 32.766kN

RB = √ 32.7662+49.1562
RB = 9.076kN → shear force of pin at B

3. Shear Stress at Pin B

RBV =
VB = τBA→ double shear 49.156kN
59.076(1000) = τB{2[1/4π(202)]}
τB = 94.02 MPa
5. The members of the structure weigh 200 lb/ft. Determine the smallest diameter pin that can
be used at A if the shearing stress is limited to 5000 psi. Assume single shear.

SOLUTION:

1. For member AB
Length, LAB=√42+42 = 5.66ft
Weight, WAB=5.66(200) = 1132lb

ΣMA=0
4RBH+4RBV = 2WAB
4RBH+4RBV = 2(1132)
RBH+RBV = 566 → Equation (1)

2. For member BC
Length, LBC = √32+62 = 6.71ft
Weight, WBC = 6.71(200) = WBC=1342lb

ΣMC=0
6RBH = 1.5WBC+3RBV
6RBH−3RBV = 1.5(1342)
2RBH−RBV = 671 → Equation (2)
3. Add equation 1 and 2
RBH+RBV=566 → Equation (1)
2RBH−RBV=671 → Equation (2)

3RBH = 1237
RBH = 412.33lb

4. From equation 1

412.33+RBV = 566
RBV = 153.67lb

5. From the free body diagram of member AB

ΣFH=0
RAH = RBH = 412.33lb

ΣFV=0
RAV+RBV = WAB
RAV+153.67 = 1132
RAV = 978.33lb

RA = √R2AH+R2AV
RA = √412.332+978.332
RA = 1061.67lb → shear force of pin at A

V = τA
1061.67 = 5000(1\4πd2)
D = 0.520 in → answer
6. The lap joint shown is fastened by four ¾-in.-diameter rivets. Calculate the maximum safe
load P that can be applied if the shearing stress in the rivets is limited to 14 ksi and the bearing
stress in the plates is limited to 18 ksi. Assume the applied load is uniformly distributed among
the four rivets.

SOLUTION:
1. For Normal Stress
Anet = (7/8”)(4”) – (3/4”)(7/8”)(3)
= 1.53 in2
σ = P/A
30 kips P
= =
¿ 1.53∈¿ ¿
= 45.9 kips

2. For Shear Stress

P=τA

P = 14[4(1/4π)(3/4)2]
P = 24.74 kips Safe load P,
P = 24.74 kips

3. For Bearing Stress

P=σbAb
P = 18[4(3/4) (7/8)]
P = 47.25 kips
