MY STUDY HABITS VERSION 4.0

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. explain how your learning style affects your study habits;
2. assess your study skills needed in effective facilitation of learning; and
3. cite ways on how to strengthen your effective study habits.

Period: Week 1 of 1st Quarter

Suggested Total Time Allotment: 60 Minutes

Materials Needed:

l Clean sheets of paper/bond papers

l Study Skills Assessment Worksheet
l Coloring materials, if available

Introduction

The pandemic situation that all of us are facing at the moment may change how you
learn but it will not hold back your education in any way. You will continue to gain knowledge
and acquire skills, perhaps in an unconventional method and environment, but you can still
learn.

5
As a learner, you will get to see the significant connection between your learning style
and your study habits. You will also be more deeply aware of your study habits by answering
a Study Skills Questionnaire that will help you assess the level of your study skills. You know
by now that developing effective study habits is one great way of ensuring academic
achievement.

Let’s Try This

Suggested Time Allotment: 5 minutes

“Isipin Mo, Iguhit Mo—Magagawa Mo!”

1. Think of one activity that you wanted to do by yourself for a long time now.
2. On a clean sheet of paper/bond paper, try to convey the idea through drawing.
3. It is all right if you need additional time to translate your idea through drawing.
Remember that your creativity is limitless.
4. Below your drawing, write your answers to the processing questions.

Processing Questions:

1. What activity did you draw? Why?

2. Was it easy to translate your idea into drawing?

6
Let’s Explore This
Suggested Time Allotment: 5 Minutes
Rank Your Senses
In the past eight years of your student life, try to analyze yourself in terms
of the senses you usually used to learn. In a scale of 1 to 5, 1 as the lowest
and 5 as the highest, rank your most used senses during learning session.

RANK
LEARNING STYLE 1 2 3 4 5
Visual – learning with
pictures and images
Auditory – learning with
sounds and music
Kinesthetic – learning with
bodily movements
Logical – learning through
reasoning
Verbal – learning through
words
Social - learning with other
people
Solitary – learning through
feelings

Processing Questions:
1. What have you noticed with your answers?
2. What convinced you to have such answers?
3. Could you recall the most recent experience where your rank 1 was
evident?

7
Keep in Mind

Suggested Time Allotment: 20 Minutes

The activity showed seven (7) different types of learners and while most of you have
a combination of different learning styles, you can say that you have a preferred method of
processing information. Each learner has a dominant learning style.

Since you are presently learning from home and not attending face-to-face classes, it
is all the more important for you to get acquainted with the different learning styles, strengthen
your dominant or preferred learning style, and cultivate good study habits connected to the
said learning styles.

There are many types of learning styles. It would help if you can identify yours so you
can be mindful how you learn best.

l Visual is a learning style where students acquire knowledge when the lessons are
presented in pictures, images, directions and diagrams. This is often called as spatial learning
style.

l Auditory is a learning style where students learn best when audio, music or sounds
are being employed in the learning session.

8
l Kinesthetic is a learning style where students are keen on utilizing their sense of
touch and hands to learn well. Kinesthetic learners learn most when they move.

l Logical is a learning style where students use reasoning, logic and systems as they
gain skills and information.

l Verbal is a learning style where students learn well through the use of words in writing
and speech.

l Social is a learning style where students are inclined to learn with other people or in
groups.

Understanding the learning styles should not be confined in the four corners of the
classroom. By knowing which style is suited to which learner can surprisingly impact how
lessons are comprehended and how teaching is ascertained.

The term learning style speaks to the understanding that every student learns
differently. Technically, an individual’s learning style refers to the preferential way in which the
student absorbs, processes, comprehends, and retains information.

Your learning style should fit or match your study habit so that you can continue to
create an effective learning environment for yourself, mainly since you will be learning from
home for now. If you know your preferred learning style, then you can be particular on the
strategies to incorporate in your study habits. However, bear in mind that learners possess
multiple learning styles or a combination of different learning styles. With this, there is no
single type of learning strategy that you can use to learn effectively because everyone has
multiple learning styles.

Additionally, here are good study habits for students that you can use, especially at
this time of pandemic, to enhance your study habit practices.

l Know what learning method best works for you

All learners gain knowledge differently from one another. You may learn better when
visual images are presented to you but your classmate may learn more comfortably when he
or she is made to listen to music or the other way round. There are many types of learner:
visual, auditory, logical, verbal, social, and solitary learners. Your study periods will be more
manageable and enjoyable, especially at this time of crisis situation, if you can figure out the
style of learning that best suits you.

l Be reasonable with your study goals

As a learner who still has countless of things to learn, do not be too hard on yourself
and remember to set practical, realistic goals for yourself. While there is nothing wrong to be
determined, understand that all dreams take time to achieve. For instance, social learners
have to understand that they cannot continue to learn vigorously with other people for now
because of the threat of a health crisis. If you already know your learning style, it will be easy
for you to conduct a self-assessment about your current study habits and your current grades.
You can utilize the SMART method when setting up your study goals: set Specific,
Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound goals.

l Create a routine and stick to it

Some learners may find cramming useful but reviewing your lessons ahead of time is
a sure way to make your study time less stressful and more effective and pleasant. When

9
people ask for the opinion of expert basketball players or car drivers how to be better, do not
be surprised to hear them say, “consistency is the key.” Once you start getting into good study
habits, it will become a routine and you will be able to maintain it throughout the school year,
whether you have classes that are face-to-face, online, and modular or a combination of the
different available learning modes.

l Balance study routine with leisure time

Structure is an important building block of a successful study routine. Make sure that
you set aside appropriate hours for study and for leisure. If you suddenly find an array of
audio-visual lectures and printed modules that you need to watch, listen to or read as a result
of the learn-from-home directive of school authorities, try to devote time to each learning
resource without distraction. If you find that you are getting exhausted, take a 5-minute break
in between lessons to give your eyes and mind a much needed rest. You may utilize the short
break to drink a glass of water or simply stretch your tired back or arms.

l Assign a space for studying

Create a study space that complements your learning style. Envision about the place
and mood that you want to be in while you study or write about your lessons. Make sure that
you have access to the necessary items that you need when you learn from home, such as
printed modules. For those who have online classes because of the pandemic, make sure
that you have the digital tool and you have good internet connection. Feel free to establish
rules when you are in your study zone. Do not let phone calls or texts or notifications from
social media distract you. Do not choose a place where you will be tempted to watch TV or
browse your smartphone, or a busy area in your house.

l Read what you have studied and learned

Going through your lessons before and after your study sessions is a great way to
improve your academic life. Giving yourself time to review your notes before you go to bed
may help you to retain the knowledge in your brain. If you combine enough sleep and constant
review of your lessons, you will have significant improvement of your brain functions useful
for your studies.

l Learn how to properly take notes

Note-taking is a skill that all learners must take seriously. In this age and time of
technology wherein a learner can take a screenshot of a teacher’s lecture or download files
with ease, it is still important that you develop your note-taking skills if you want to remember
important information better. Imagine being asked by your mother to buy groceries and you
forgot to take notes about it? You will end up buying things that your mother does not need.
Taking notes helps you to remember vital information with efficiency, simplicity and ease.

l Use gadgets appropriately during class hours

If you are using a gadget for note-taking in your offline or online class, then make
sure you are still able to focus and pay attention to your lessons. You do not want to get
used to surfing the web or using your smartphone while learning from home. If you are
always on the internet, texting, or checking your email during your break or free time,
chances are, you will probably be tempted to do the same when you are studying.

l Join an online study group if possible

If you are a social learner, then you should consider asking help from your family
members or friends and participate in study groups. Crisis situations such as public health

10
emergencies are not reasons to allow our social relationships to disintegrate but health and
safety protocols must be observed at all times. Studying with the help of your family
members or groups can help you remember class material better. You can ask questions
to clarify difficult points, and respond or react to questions. In this way, meaningful
exchange of information is still possible even if there are no face-to-face classes for now.

10. Get enough sleep and eat healthy food

Studying when you are sleepy is ineffective. If your body is telling you that you are
tired, then have a nap or go to bed early. A good night’s sleep will help you understand and
remember information better. It is also much less stressful to study or complete your class
requirements when you feel well-rested and alert. Choosing the right food for your nutrition
will make a difference in terms of brain functions. So eat only what is healthy for the body.

l Create a schedule and a daily to-do list

Do not forget to do a regular self-assessment about your grades, study hours and
lesson notes so that you will know what studying techniques work for you. Now that you
are learning from home, engage the help of your parents or guardians and teachers to help
you evaluate yourself. What is considered effective for one learner may not necessarily
work for another. Do not be afraid to learn and re-learn as learning is a life-long process.
When your heart and mind are in the right place, you will find that challenging tasks create
fulfilling results in the end.

You Can Do It!

Suggested Time Allotment: 20 minutes
To gain a better understanding of yourself as a learner, it is helpful to identify the study
skills that you can use. Determine carefully if you have study skills that need a boost but bear
in mind that it is always beneficial to constantly improve your study skills. This informal
inventory is a short and quick tool for assessing your study skills. This is not a test, so please
feel free to ask for assistance from your teacher/parent/guardian when or where you feel you
need it. Answer each question as honestly as you can.

1. Read each statement and think about it.

2. Copy the table on a clean sheet of paper/bond paper and place a check (/) in the column
that best describes your current level as it relates to the study statement.

Suggested Time Allotment: 1 Minute
From your past module, you learned about the different learning styles and how
these can affect your study habits. In addition, you were able to assess your study
skills and identify those that are needed for the effective facilitation of learning. You
were also able to gain insights about the different ways on how you can strengthen
effective study habits.

Introduction

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to
add color to my sunset sky.” – Rabindranath Tagore

5
Understanding your limitations inside and outside the school is just as important
as looking into other aspects, like life experiences, social economic status, lifestyle,
values, and beliefs. All of these can influence your achievement of life goals. These
life goals are great motivational factors for you to keep going and be inspired in being
the best, especially when unexpected life setbacks happen, such as the current Covid-
19 pandemic.

Indeed, continuing to focus on your studies is one of the best foundations that
you can build. Specifically, consider the advantages and disadvantages of using
effective study habits as your guide to develop routines—things that you can do on a
regular basis which can help you achieve academic success. As a learner, you
constantly face several things that demand your time for school or family. But knowing
your priorities or what is important in life will guide you to do what is best.

In this module, you can learn how to be a strong-minded individual who knows
how to manage activities and time well and who can share effective study habits which
will be helpful to lifelong learning.

Processing Questions:
1. What do you feel when you recall those challenges?
2. How different or similar are the study habits in various challenges?
3. How do you look at these challenges in relation to your academic success?

Keep in Mind
Suggested Time Allotment: 10 Minutes

Challenges are normal occurrences in life. No single person can say that he or
she has never encountered a challenge. From the time you were born as a baby, you
struggled to crawl, to walk and to talk. As a toddler, you struggled to contain your

8
tantrums when you did not get what you wanted. As you added years in your life, you
began to notice that the challenges you experienced became more varied, complex
and difficult than before.
This health crisis situation that we are experiencing is a challenge in itself. We
sometimes struggle to remember and apply all the necessary health and safety
protocols from authorities. We struggle to avoid going to places if it is not necessary.
We struggle to find safe ways to keep in touch with family, friends and loved ones
while observing physical distancing. Even the learning setup is a challenge not only
for you but for your classmates, parents, family members, teachers, and friends, as
well.

Thus, everyone experiences challenges even before COVID-19. Could you

imagine a life without challenges? A life where you don’t have to overcome any
challenge at all? Regardless of its kind, we must constantly equip ourselves with ways
on how we can rise above these challenges and deal with it positively. We have to
develop effective study habits for the attainment of exemplary performance not only in
school but in life later on.

Below are the suggested strategies or ways to help you achieve academic
success:
S - Set your academic goal for this school year.
T - Track your development through daily and weekly study plan.
R - Recognize the need for help or assistance from your parents, teachers
and other adults in relation to your academic needs.
A - Accomplish your learning tasks ahead of time.
T - Thoroughly check the quality, quantity and presentation of your outputs
before submission.
E - Exercise efficiency in the use of time, materials and efforts in achieving
academic goal.
G - Gather all possible resources from books and other resources in order to
have better understanding of the topic in your classes.
Y - Yearn to perform better and remember your motivation, study skills and
study habits.

Likewise, as much as possible learn to avoid the following:

W - Wasting time or doing irrelevant activities while having classes like
playing online games, chatting, watching movies or TV series and
daydreaming
A - Allowing peers to dictate your plans and actions
S – Stressing yourself to the point that you cannot function well
T – Thoughts that are negative like difficulty of the subject, chance of failure
and inability to learn new lessons
E – Exhibiting unhealthy behavior (e.g. poor sleeping habits, excessive use
of gadgets, not taking time to relax)

9
Keep in mind that the strategies discussed above cannot be mastered
overnight. All study habits which are proven effective and efficient take time, hard work
and practice. Whenever you take it upon yourself to apply the strategies seriously, you
will begin to see that the challenges you encounter within and outside the school
setting are not as overwhelming or discouraging as before. Navigating life, with or
without the presence of a crisis situation such as the Covid-19, becomes more
manageable if you are familiar with the strategies or ways that will lead you towards
academic success.

For adolescent learners like you, some of the most needed study habits in your
age group are time management, note-taking, managing distractions, doing advance
readings and of course listening attentively, even if face-to-face classes for now are
temporarily not being conducted. While it is ideal to practice every single effective
study habit, all learners have preferential study habits depending on their learning
styles and personal circumstances.

Similarly, avoiding unhelpful routines that hinder a learner from academic

success also takes practice. It takes a lot of determination, focus and self-control to
nurture your ability to say “no” to distractions and unnecessary activities, especially
now that you do a lot of studying by yourself because of the pandemic.

You Can Do It!

8
Processing Questions
1.) What are the child’s rights that you think you enjoy most?
2.) What are the other child’s rights that you hope to experience more? And
how?

Keep in Mind

Suggested Time Allotment: 10 minutes

Though you already had taken up child’s rights in your previous grade levels
and lessons, let’s try to revisit The Rights of a Filipino Child which is under the
Presidential Decree No. 603 or the Child and Youth Welfare Code. It states that the
child is one of the most important assets of the nation. Likewise, the UNICEF
Convention on the Rights of the Children has also identified the following child rights:

1. Every child has the right to life, survival and development.

2. Every child has the right to name and nationality.
3. Every child has the right to keeping families together.
4. Every child has the right to be educated.
5. Every child has the right to play and enjoy whenever they have the
opportunity.
6. Every child has the right to be protected from abuse of adults.
7. Every child has the right to live peacefully away from bad influences.
8. Every child has the right to be cared whenever their parents are not
available or cannot sustain their needs.
9. Every child has the right to express their views and opinions and to
their privacy.
10. Every child has the right to grow up peacefully and getting what they
want for the good of their lives.

All child rights are human rights, which were especially created for children’s
protection and for them to become better individuals. According to UNICEF Committee
on the Rights of the Child, there are 4 main areas or “baskets” (groups) of Children’s
Rights; these are the right to protection from discrimination, abuse, neglect,
exploitation, torture; the right to survival, comprising the elements of life, nutrition,
water, health, air; the right to participation, including expression of views, decision-
making, access to information, freedom of association; and right to development which
includes education, standard of living, adequate for the child’s physical, mental,
spiritual, moral and social development.

9
Aside from rights, children also have roles such as being a son or daughter,
sibling, grandchild, student and a person among others. The roles of children
nowadays are also no longer based on sex since we are now embracing gender equity,
wherein a girl can do the tasks previously intended for a boy, and vice versa. Both
sexes can do home repairs, laundry, cooking, sewing and many more.

Children have rights and roles. However, there are also responsibilities that go
along with them. These make up the three Rs of a child.

Based on the Child and Youth Welfare Code, the following are the identified
responsibilities of a child:

1. Strive to lead an upright and virtuous life in accordance to one’s religion, the
teachings of his elders and mentors, and his clean conscience;

2. Love, respect, and obey his parents, and cooperate with them in the
strengthening of the family; this includes following the health and safety
protocols in this time of pandemic such as observing physical distancing,
frequent handwashing, wearing of face masks and face shields, sanitize objects
and items, and consult medical attention when there are symptoms.

3. Extend to his brothers and sisters his love, thoughtfulness, and helpfulness,
and endeavor with them to keep the family harmonious and united;

4. Exert his utmost to develop his potentialities for service, particularly by

undergoing a formal education suited to his abilities, in order that he may
become an asset to himself and the society; This includes studying well for your
future.

5. Respect not only his elders but also the customs and traditions of people, the
memory of heroes, the authorities, the laws of our country and the principles
and institutions of democracy;

6. Participate actively in civic affairs and in the promotion of the general welfare.

7. Help in the observance of individual human rights.

Your three Rs will make you appreciate yourself better. Know your basic rights;
perform your roles well; and act on your responsibilities. Your three Rs will make you
a vital part of the community.

Homeroom Guidance Grade 9
Quarter 1 – Module 4:
Becoming Better with Self-Discipline

damdamin at pananaw.

kanyang gurong-tagapayo.

BECOMING BETTER
4 WITH SELF-DISCIPLINE

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. explain the role of self-discipline in maintaining positive self-concept;
2. analyze how self-discipline reflects one’s action; and
3. narrate insights on applying self-discipline in facing personal changes.

Period: Week 4 of 1st Quarter

Suggested Total Time Allotment: 60 Minutes

Materials Needed:

• Clean sheets of paper/bond papers

• Pen/pencil
• Any coloring materials

Introduction
This module is intended to instill in you the importance of practicing self-discipline
in everyday life. This is important as you stay strong and motivated in the midst
of the pandemic and as you begin to adapt to a new way of seeing things in this so-called new
normal. Self-discipline is the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses.
Self-discipline is also necessary for distance learning. Since the traditional ways of
learning are temporarily suspended, you are committed to learn from home for now as
effectively as possible, sometimes relying on the assistance that we get from our teachers,
parents and the community in general. If you are the type of learner who normally needs to
hear what you have to do, it is about time that you strengthen your self-discipline and become
focused and independent in no time.

In this module, you will exercise and test the discipline you have in yourself by not
allowing external factors affect your focus and goal to complete your school tasks. You will
also relate personal changes, problems, and situations that you encounter which require self-
control in order to overcome the said challenges.

5
Let’s Review

In Module 3, you were able to know the different child rights, discussed how
to exercise those rights responsibly, and realized your value as a member of your
family and community.

Let’s Try This

Suggested Time Allotment: 10 minutes
Recall an experience when you were thankful for having controlled yourself from being
impulsive. For example, when you avoided saying hurting words to a good friend or when you
were able to save money by ignoring unnecessary things. After that moment, what were your
thoughts and realizations about the incident? Capture your answers to the questions by
making a simple poster. Use short bond paper, pencil and any coloring materials.

Processing Questions:
1. Did the experience change anything in you? Why or why not?
2. What could have happened if you were impulsive during that time?
3. What do you think will happen if you master to control your impulsive actions or
behavior?

Let’s Explore This

Suggested Time Allotment: 10 minutes

Processing Questions:
1. How do you feel about yourself upon seeing all your answers?
2. Are those actions helpful for you to have a positive image of yourself? How?
3. How should your self-discipline improve the way you see yourself?

Keep in Mind
Suggested Time Allotment: 15 minutes
Self-improvement does not only manifest in your physical look as it can also be seen
in your behavior or command of emotions. Hence, when you develop self-discipline, you can
see yourself regulating your emotions well and deciding carefully before taking actions.
There’s nothing wrong if you feel different emotions such as being happy, angry, excited, sad,
inspired, or disappointed, as those are normal reaction of any human being but the timing and
the manner of expression make a difference. For instance, if you are angry, it is not an excuse
to hurt other or break the things at home; or if you are happy, it is not enough reason to forget
about your important and immediate tasks. There are proper ways and time to express those
things and learning them means having self-discipline.

The following are just seven ways to increase self-discipline, as you can learn other
things from other respected sources:

7 Ways to Improve Self-Discipline

Commit to your goal. Whether it’s getting over your emotions or getting enough sleep at night,
it is important to go back to your goals; remind yourself why you need to do it and stick to it.
Objectivity is the key. Don’t be too hard on yourself but don’t be too easy as well. Put yourself
in another perspective aside from yours so that you can look at a bigger picture of the situation.
Never underestimate willpower. Use your inner strength to resist temptations that will set you
back from your goals.
Think of your motivation. People have attested that constantly being presented with the
reasons why they set their goals has an immense effect in helping them achieve what they
want.
Rest and reset. You don’t have to always outrun your goals. There are days when you walk
on much slower pace and feel less motivated but use those days to help you power through
and reach your goals.
Overwhelming yourself may not be okay. Don’t set too many unrealistic goals that you’ll have
trouble finishing. It’s better to set one at a time than be overwhelmed with too many that you
can no longer handle.
Live a life with a can-do attitude. Believe in yourself and in your ability to attain whatever goal
you want.

Self-discipline has been regarded as a staple key in achieving balance in one’s life.
Now that we have been ushered into a new normal brought by the pandemic, the importance
of having control in ourselves should be highlighted.

Introductory Message

For the learner:

As part of establishing a healthy relationship with others, certain ways have to

be practiced, such as respect. In Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, respect is being taught
as part of your values system but in Homeroom Guidance, you can look at it as an
important part of your social skills. We respect each other because we do recognize
and accept each others’ existence. We are all connected to one another, hence, let’s
make our similarities and difference of good use to strengthen our connections.

Work on the tasks seriously; seek help if you believe you need to. Remember,
in life there are things that you cannot control just like the people around you. There
will be negative events that will challenge practices of respect. However, do not be
disheartened: you have the means on how to overcome it; you have that in you!
Embark on this journey of valuing respect as an important part of building harmonious
relationship.

This self-learning module has six indicative tasks, which are as follows:

Let’s Try This – which will help you to get ready to learn;

Let’s Explore This – which will guide you towards what you need to learn;

Keep in Mind – which will give you the lessons that you need to learn and
understand;

You Can Do It – which will help you apply the lessons learned in daily
activities;

What I Have learned – which will test and evaluate your learning;

Share Your Thoughts and Feelings – which will help you express your
thoughts, opinions and feelings.

Make sure to read, think, follow, and enjoy every task that you are asked to do.
Have fun! Stay safe and healthy!

RESPECT TO CONNECT

Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. determine the situations or conditions that promote respect for others;
2. examine your practices of respect for others; and
3. value the impact of respect in maintaining positive relationship with others.

Period: Week 5 of 1st Quarter

Suggested Total Time Allotment: 60 Minutes

Materials Needed:

• Clean sheets of paper/bond papers

• Pen or pencil
• Coloring materials, if available

Introduction

We always
hear the statement “Respect is
not given, but earned”. This
module is designed to help you
establish meaningful social
connections by respecting the
differences and similarities of the
people in the society. Recognizing
the unique beliefs, cultures, and values of different individuals, groups, and
communities is an effective way to deal with the diversity of people. Respect means

5
honoring a person’s existence, and accepting his/her characteristics without any
judgment regardless if they are similar or different from us.
The lessons in this module will help you recognize the different ways and
situations on how to show respect to other people. Aptly, this module will let you value
the impact of respect, especially in maintaining good relationship and connection with
the people around you.

When you are able to show respect on the diversities and rights of the people
around you, you will then have a harmonious relationship with them. Doing things that
promote respect will have a significant effect on your personality and personal growth.

Let’s Review

In Module 4, you were able to know the significance of practicing self-

discipline in your everyday life and its importance in facing personal changes and
growth.

Let’s Try This

Suggested Time Allotment: 5 minutes
If you are going to give a grade on your practices of respect, what would it be?
What about to your family members at home? Why?
Write your answer on a sheet of paper.

Processing Questions:
1. Why did you give those grades?
2. What do those grades mean to you? to your family?

Let’s Explore This

Suggested Time Allotment: 15 minutes
Recommend ways on how to show respect in the given situations:
1. No matter how you try to be nice with your older cousing Alleck, he always
tries to pick on you. He humiliates you publicly by making you a laughing
stock on almost about everything.

6
2. You visited a relative named Agay who belongs to an indigenous group. He
happily prepared an exotic food for lunch. However, you are not comfortable
eating such food and it is your first time to be in their house.
3. Your friend’s mother Chia who happened to be your neighbor creates gossip
about your family. One morning, you overheard her talking about you with
your other neighbors in front of your house.

Processing Questions:
1. What have you observed with your answers?
2. Was it easy or hard to apply your recommended ways? Why?
3. Do you really need to be respectful always? Why?

Keep in Mind

Suggested Time Allotment: 15 minutes

You discover new things

about yourself every day. As you
become aware of the similarities
and differences you have with other
people, you might ask many why’s,
such as why you are different and
you are similar from others.
This is understandable
because you and other people come from various places, have different family
backgrounds, family histories and orientation. You might have countless, different
experiences from others. Add the fact that there are factors that might affect the way
you relate yourself to other people. Take note though that you can always improve the
way you relate to other people, through effective communication and by genuinely
respecting their beliefs, cultures, and values. There are numerous ways to respect
others effectively. It is a social skill that we must enhance at all times.

Being a Grade 9 learner, it is normal to be conscious about expressing yourself

without disrespecting others. You must be mindful on how you treat other people as
they might misinterpret your actions or words. As you go along with the journey of life,
you must also have a wider respect and acceptance for others. Respect and
acceptance are lifelong processes that you must always take on a positive note.

7
Respect for others is an essential way to maintain good relationships with the
people around you. It is the foundation of your connection to others, the same way
that other people’s foundation in having an effective connection with you, too.

Now that the entire world is facing a pandemic, respect is even more essential
and powerful. We respect by practicing physical distancing and wearing facemask in
public. We show our respect by being a good citizen and following the prescribed rules
and regulations set by our government to stop the transmission of the virus. We have
learned to respect other people’s personal spaces even more. To add, we show
respect nowadays by not only being considerate to others but by taking care of
ourselves so that in our own way, we become valuable warriors against this virus.

Another form of timely respect that we can manifest now is the non-
discrimination of people who were afflicted by the virus. When we do not stigmatize
the people affected by this virus or their families, we show not only respect but
compassion to others.

With all of these, may we not forget that showing respect means:
R egarding and treating
E verybody with kindness,
S howing good manners and
P oliteness to all,
E xhibiting equal courtesy as well as
C ivility and consideration, and
T hriving with tact and a thoughtful attitude.

You Can Do It

Be a Singer or a Poet for R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Suggested Time Allotment: 15 minutes
With what you have learned from our activities and discussion, we will further
enhance your ideas. For your next activity, you are going to make a short poem or
song that will showcase respect for others and its importance in having good
relationships with other people. Write it on a clean sheet of paper or bond paper.

WE ARE DIFFERENT, BUT ONE

Learning Objectives
At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. identify actions or behaviors that promote respect for individual differences

in the family;
2. analyze situations involving family duties that promote good relationship;
and
3. appreciate the importance of responsibility in establishing good relationship
despite individual differences.
Period: Week 6 of 1st Quarter

Suggested Total Time Allotment: 60 Minutes

Introduction

We are all unique, but we also have similarities. It is important that we are aware of
our personal characteristics most especially those that can help us establish good
relationships. Individual differences are already a given fact and the best way to deal with it is
acceptance and respect.
As we live in this new normal, it is necessary to gain insights about our behaviors that
promote respect for individual differences especially within our family. Such insight will
promote healthy relationships and responsible family members.

5
Let’s Try This
Suggested Time Allotment: 10 minutes
Worked as One
Think of a situation about your family where you needed to work together or at least
helped one another to accomplish something. How did it affect your relationship as family
members? Try to come up with a representation or symbol of that experience. Draw it on a
short bond paper. Feel free to color it if you want. Answer the following questions afterwards.
Processing Questions:
1. How did you feel upon seeing the symbol?
2. Can you really set aside your individual differences for a greater purpose? How?

Let’s Explore This

Suggested Time Allotment: 15 minutes

Copy the table on a clean sheet of paper. Answer the questions in each column.

Learners like you tend to become interested in an activity if you see yourself
competent in performing it and if you see the positive outcome. Interests are unlikely
to develop in activities in which you see yourself as not performing well and you most
likely expect negative outcomes. Interest may also flourish if you already possess the
talent and you have an enabling environment that can support to achieve positive
outcomes. This may not also develop if you are deprived of the chances to nurture
your efficiency and positive beliefs about yourself.

You Can Do It!
