I Objective and request

MFPA Leipzig GmbH was ordered by Hilti Corporation to assess the load
bearing behaviour of bonded fasteners with injection system Hilti
HIT-RE 500 V4 under one-sided fire loading according to the standard-
time-temperature-curve according to [N1]. The assessment and associated
determination of the characteristic tensile load bearing capacities includes
the failure modes ”steel failure”, ”pull-out failure” and ”concrete cone
failure”.
The document at hand summarizes the design concept in case of fire and
the corresponding characteristic load bearing capacities. For the detailed
derivation of the values, please see [G1].

1 Description of the construction

The injection system Hilti HIT-RE 500 V4 is a bonded fastener consist-
ing of a foil pack with injection mortar Hilti HIT-RE 500 V4 and a steel
element. The steel element is placed in a drilled hole filled with injection
mortar and anchored by the bond between the mortar, metal part and
concrete. With [P1] a European Technical Assessment is available for the
injection system Hilti HIT-RE 500 V4.
For the steel element, according to [P1]

• threaded rods Hilti HAS-U, Hilti HIT-V, Hilti meter rod AM 8.8 or
commercial threaded rods with washer and hexagon nut in the range
of M8 to M30,

• rebars in the range of ∅ 8 to ∅ 32,

• Hilti Tension Anchors HZA in the range of M12 to M27 or HZA-R

in the range of M12 to M24,

• internal threaded sleeves HIS-(R)N in the range M8 to M20

may be utilized. The use of the injection system Hilti HIT-RE 500 V4 is
permitted under static, quasi-static and seismic loading in reinforced and
unreinforced, cracked and non-cracked normal weight concrete of strength
class of at least C20/25 and at most C50/60 according to [N2].
The required diameter of the drilled hole as well as the required drilled hole
depth and the minimum component thickness are given for each anchor
type in [P1]. The geometry of the bonded fasteners is shown in Figure 1.

III Assessment of the performance

1 Design concept
The characteristic load bearing capacity of a bonded fastener in case of
fire under tension load has to be determined as the minimum value of the
load bearing capacities for the failure modes pull-out failure, steel failure
and concrete cone failure

NRk,f i (t) = mi n NRk,p,f i (t), NRk,s,f i (t), NRk,c,f i (t) . (1)

2 Steel failure
The temperature-dependent load bearing capacity of the steel elements is
limited by the load bearing capacity of the anchor cross-section and the
load bearing capacity of the connection between the anchor and the nut.
Steel failure under fire exposure consequently occurs either in the form of
a breakage of the anchor or in the form of shearing off of the nut.
The characteristic load bearing capacities NRk,s,f i (t) for the injection sys-
tem Hilti HIT-RE 500 V4 under fire loading according to the standard-
time-temperature-curve are summarized in Table 1 for galvanized carbon
steel and in Table 2 for stainless steel. The values given are to be limited
by the load bearing capacity in ambient climate according to the manu-
facturers’ specifications.

to fire according to the standard-time-temperature-curve

3 Pull-out failure
If the tensile loading of a bonded fastener exceeds the load bearing capac-
ity of the interface between concrete, injection mortar and anchor, pull-out
failure occurs. In this context, a distinction must be made between un-
cracked and cracked concrete structures.
The characteristic load bearing capacities NRk,p,uncr,f i (t) for pull-out from
uncracked concrete under fire loading according to the standard-time-
temperature-curve are shown for galvanized carbon steel in Tables 3 to
5 and for stainless steel in Tables 6 to 8. Linear interpolation is permitted
between the individual values. Extrapolation is not permitted.
For the characteristic load bearing capacities NRk,p,cr,f i (t) for pull-out
from cracked concrete under fire loading according to the standard-time-
temperature-curve, the following applies in all cases

NRk,p,cr,f i = 0,75 · NRk,p,uncr,f i . (2)

4 Concrete cone failure

Concrete cone failure in conjunction with tension loaded bonded fasteners
occurs, when the tensile strength of the concrete is locally exceeded.
0
The characteristic tensile load bearing capacity NRk,c,f i (t) for concrete
cone failure is calculated in accordance with [N4], Chapter 2.2.1.3 (Sim-
plified design method for the determination of the duration of the fire
resistance of anchorages) and [N3], Appendix D.4.2.2 for a fire duration
up to 90 minutes

NRk,c,f i(90) = · NRk,c ≤ NRk,c (3)

and for a fire duration between 90 minutes and 120 minutes

NRk,c,f i(120) = 0,8 · · NRk,c ≤ NRk,c (4)

gle bonded fastener in cracked concrete C20/25 under ambient climate

according to [P1], hef : effective embedment depth. The characteristic

load bearing capacity NRk,c,f i to be considered in the framework of the
design has to be determined for each specific construction capturing the
influences of neighbouring anchors and the edge distance. In this context,
reference is given to [N3], Chapter 7.2.1.4 and Appendix D.4.2.2.
The given equations are applicable provided that the characteristic spacing
scr,f i and characteristic edge distance ccr,f i according to [N3], Appendix
D.4.2.2 are met

scr,f i = 4 · hef , (5)

ccr,f i = 2 · hef . (6)

IV Special notes/Limits of application

The advisory opinion at hand applies to bonded fasteners with injection sys-
tem Hilti HIT-RE 500 V4 manufactured by Hilti Corporation with threaded
rods M8 to M30, which are installed in compliance with the installation
instructions described in [P1]. The mechanical loading must not exceed
the load bearing capacity under ambient climate specified in [P1].

The load bearing capacities specified in the framework of the document at

hand were determined for one-sided fire loading according to the standard-
time-temperature-curve according to [N1]. Following [N4], , Chapter 2.1
and [N3], Appendix D.1(5) the values may also be applied to multi-sided
fire loading, provided that c ≥ 300mm and c ≥ 2 · hef apply to the edge
distance of the anchor.

The load bearing capacities specified in the framework of the document at

hand apply to threaded rods made of galvanized carbon steel of strength
class ≥ 5.8 and to threaded rods made of stainless steel A4.

The load bearing capacities for steel failure specified in the framework
of the document at hand were determined for centric tensile loading in the
longitudinal direction of the anchor. According to [N3], Appendix D.4.3.1,
on the safe side a transfer to tensile loads without lever arm perpendicular
and diagonal to the anchor axis is possible.

The determination of the characteristic load bearing capacities for con-

crete pry-out failure and concrete edge failure may be performed in accor-
dance with [N3], Appendix D.4.3.2 and Appendix D.4.3.3.

The assessment at hand is valid for constructions of reinforced or un-

reinforced normal weight concrete of the strength class ≥ C20/25 and ≤
C50/60 according to [N2], which exhibit at least the same fire resistance
class as the utilized bonded fastener. The design of the concrete con-
struction has to be carried out according to [N6].

The load bearing capacities specified in the framework of the document at

hand are determined assuming that no explosive concrete spalling occurs
and are only valid under this condition. Evidence on the prevention of
explosive concrete spalling is given in [N6], Chapter 4.5.
