Introduction and Focus Questions


You've learned from the previous lesson that Southeast Asia is home to eleven countries namely
Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, East Timor, Laos, Brunei, Vietnam, and the
Philippines. You've learned about how rich their culture is as well as their musical ensembles, musical
instruments, and their different vocal forms of music.

Art and music are believed to share common elements as they both express creativity and evoke deep
emotions.
The arts of Southeast Asian countries are diverse and rich in cultural aspects. They often feature intricate
designs, vibrant colors, and a focus on nature and spirituality (https://www.quora.com ).

So how does the culture of Southeast Asia describe its arts and crafts? What is the relationship of the
development of crafts in specific countries in Southeast Asia, according to functionality, traditional specialized
expertise, and availability of resources?

In this module, you will learn about the rich culture, history, and arts of Southeast Asian nature. You will
appreciate how their people are intertwined and united by faith, love, and respect.

EXPLORE:

Arts and crafts of specific Southeast Asian countries are vibrant and one of a kind. Every stroke,
color, size, and form has a touch of history that foretells a story of how people in these countries
survived battles we knew nothing about. These arts and crafts present their uniqueness in terms of
customs and beliefs from other countries.

In this lesson, we are going to identify the different arts and crafts of Thailand, Malaysia,
Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Brunei. We will also discuss the different types of attire
each country represents to keep their identities different from their neighboring country as well as their
accessories.
Activity 01: Lo and Order
Description: Arrange the following paragraphs orderly. Read, comprehend, and identify which comes
first.

1. Thailand (Answer: 1 – 3 – 2 – 4)

Like what its name suggests, Loy Krathong makes use of floating banana leaves
baskets with lighted candles, incense, and flowers. Believed to honor the water
goddess Mae Kongkha, it originated in Sukhothai in the 13th century.

Celebrated at the same time, Thais have two enchanting festivals namely: Loy
Krathong Festival of Light and Yi Peng Lantern Festival. Lighted candles float down the
river during Loy Krathong while lanterns fly during the Yi Peng Lantern Festival.

With the celebration focuses on the Chao Phraya River, people who want to
float krathongs should include small clipping of fingernails or hair and light the candle
and incense so their wish will come true.

Chiang Mai is the most popular place in northern Thailand where the Yi Peng
festival is being observed. Here, colorful lanterns are displayed. The Thais believe that
the releasing of the lanterns to sky honors Buddha, removes bad memories and
signifies good future.

2. Singapore (Answer: 3 – 2 – 1 – 4)

According to the legends, a Malay prince named Sang Nila Utama saw a half-
fish and half lion creature in the waters of Temasek.

Lim Nang Seng sculpted the massive 8.6-meter high symbol which was also the
symbol of the Singapore Tourism Board.

Singapore’s iconic emblem is the Merlion. Located in One Fullerton, this statue
designed by Fraser Brunner in 1964 has a lion head and fish tail

This inspired the sanskrit name Singapura which means Lion City. It was also
said that the creature protects the country and its inhabitants from potential danger.
