INTRODUCTION TO

HYBRID SCANNING

Hybrid Scanning Uses Multiple

Sensors Like
• Terrestrial Scanners
• SLAM Devices
• Mobile Mapping
• Drones
In an project and Merges all of them
to create a single Data source
INTRODUCTION TO
HYBRID SCANNING

Hybrid Scanning are used in the

applications that requires
• Blend of Speed, Precision, and
Flexibility
• Level of Details & Accuracy in the
Scans
• Monitoring and Progress Reports
• Limited Access and Short time for scan
• Complex Geometry and difficult
Terrains
• Type of Deliverable
• After use of deliverables
INTRODUCTION TO
HYBRID SCANNING

PRE-BID REQUIREMENTS
● What are the demands of the
project?

○ Time span of the project

○ Time and space for scanning
○ Available survey setup Controls
○ Any Exiting Drawings and Models
○ Budgeting
○ Crew members
○ Cash flow requirements
○ Terms of delivery
PLANNING FOR
HYBRID SCANNING

PLANNING
o Create your Zones of Work
o Demarcate areas for Static and Mobile Scans
o Get plans Marked in to the site drawings
o Create Overlapping areas between scan
Zones
o Create Team for Static and Mobile Scans
o Identify Resources
o Communicate your plans to the all the Teams

PLANNING FOR
HYBRID SCANNING

ESTIMATE
o Define your maximum capacity of point clouds
database depending on the Processing power
of your Computers
o Define Number of Scans / Workspace and
use proper nomenclature for file naming
o Estimate the number of static / Mobile scans
per defined area and create time line
schedules
o The timeline estimates are important for pre
and post bid

TOTAL AREA 10000 SQ M

EFFECTIVE Single Scan Area 25 SQ.M
Total Scans 400 SCANS
No Of Scans / Day 40 SCANS
Total Days 10 DAYS
Targets & Control Surveys 2 DAYS
TOTAL PROJECT DAYS 12 DAYS
PLANNING FOR
HYBRID SCANNING

Project Logs
● STATIC LASER SCANNING (Project Log)
○ Documentation Of Survey Is An Essential Part
Of Surveying Work
3D data not properly documented is susceptible to
embedded mistakes and is difficult to adjust or modify to
reflect changes in control

○ The SURVEY NARRATIVE Report Should

Contain
• Project name and identification:
• County, route, postal codes, and project Identification
• Survey date, limits, and purpose
• Problems encountered

o The SURVEY TECHNICAL Report Should

Contain
• Datum, epoch, and units
• Control points
● Found, held, used, and set for the survey
• Personnel, equipment, and surveying methods used
• Field notes including
● Scan diagrams
● Control geometry
● Instrument setups and target heights
● Any Mobile scan adjacent to the Scan locations
PLANNING FOR
HYBRID SCANNING

Project Logs
● MOBILE(SLAM) LASER SCANNING (Project Log)
○ The SURVEY NARRATIVE Report Should
Contain
• Project name and identification:
• Area with Mobile scans
• Number of scan and duration of each scan
• Additional accessories list used in the scan (like
camera GPS)
• Mounting Details (Handheld, Car, Drone Mounts)

o The SURVEY TECHNICAL Report Should

Contain
• Date time and Durations of each scans
• Camera file (if used)
• GPS Trajectory files (if used)
• GCP locations and list to be used in processing
• Field notes including
• Scan diagrams
• GCP geometry marked for each scan separately
• Scan Name / Numbers
• If used on any Mounts keep a separate log
• Nearest Static Scan stations
PLANNING FOR
HYBRID SCANNING

Post - Processing

● Compile all Static and Mobile Scan data

● Group theme base on the proximity (Always
Refer Logs)
● Segregate Folders containing (as per scan
regions)
• GCP List
• Camera Files
• SLAM scan Files
• Static scan Files
● Create separate workspaces (as per scan
regions)
● Register and Geo-Reference scan
● Merge the Scans from different Regions and
create the final Database
● Classify scans in to different Regions
● Create Scan database for production
