abstraction and abstract art in Bulgaria have never been subject to a comprehensive study
or presentation. The fragmentary theoretical interpretation on the subject reveals unusually
controversial attitude towards abstraction as an artistic phenomenon in the history of Bulgarian
art. at the same time the work of a large number of Bulgarian artists from different generations
testifies to the presence of a constant interest and commitment to the ideas of abstract art.
‘The Untold Bulgarian abstraction’ is a book that takes this situation as its starting point.
The book contains two parts. The first part addresses the issue of abstraction in the context of
the history of Bulgarian art and Bulgarian art theory trying to outline specific development of
ideas and interpretations, relating to abstraction in different historical periods. The second part
of the book is a catalogue of artworks included in the curatorial project ‘The Untold abstraction‘
– an exhibition held at the national exhibition centre of the Union of Bulgarian artists in sofia
from 12 until 31 May 2014. The catalogue offers numerous documented thoughts and texts
by the artists themselves and various texts about them and their works from a large number
of art historians and art critics.
‘The Untold abstraction‘ is the largest exposition on the subject, realized in Bulgaria until now,
so the book is trying to convey all the rhetoric of the curatorial project and the results of the
complex and important discussion accompaning this artistic event.
The focus of examination is mostly on painting and sculpture and the expanded parameters
and transformations of these two main art mediums. outside the scope of the book remains the
impact of abstraction on the development of photography, new electronic media, architecture,
design and decorative arts in Bulgaria.

real world. (1) in 1940 in his famous article ‘Towards a newer laocoon‘ clement greenberg
declares:
‘The dogmatism and intransigence of the ‘non-objective‘ or ‘abstract‘ purists of painting
today cannot be dismissed as symptoms merely of a cultist attitude towards art. Purists make
extravagant claims for art, because usually they value it much more than anyone else does.
For the same reason they are much more solicitous about it. a great deal of purism is the
translation of an extreme solicitude, an anxiousness as to the fate of art, a concern for its
identity.‘ (2)
The challenge of the pure abstraction is a category, which pulsates as a center, around
which gravitate all possible forms of the abstract art, whether they proceed from the reality,
or have no connection with it. There are different stories of the abstraction, as well as there
are different geographies of the abstraction, but there aren’t different spiritual aspects of the
abstraction. Therefore sometimes the challenge of the pure abstraction contains doubt, that
under the term ‘purity‘ is hidden a moral imperative, which is ready to invade inside the field
of the aesthetic.
The challenge of the pure abstraction contains a will for achieving an art, which with its
purity offers ‘spiritual awakening‘ of the modern man. The role of the pure abstraction as a

spiritual means and language of the spirituality reflects the connection of the abstract art
with the endless utopian humanism of the modernism. Meanwhile the challenge of the pure
abstraction is a symbol of the faith, that art always can be separated from the past and to
construct an entirely new beginning.
The abstraction in Bulgaria has its own specific historical and geographical destiny, but its
spiritual destiny is not more different from the challenges of the pure abstraction in any point
in the world. it is remarkable in this sense, that the earliest manifestation of abstract art in the
work of a Bulgarian artist becomes famous in Bulgaria almost 100 years after its creation,
when unknown abstract graphics and watercolours of Bistra Vinarova, kept by the artist’s
family, are shown for the first time in the national art gallery in sofia in 2013. (3)
12

quence. The published works and critical articles doesn’t lead to new attempts and seem to
be forgotten.' (6)
according to svilen stefanov – researcher of the influence of the vanguards and neo-
vanguards over the development of the Bulgarian art – it is difficult to talk about a presence of
a real abstraction in Bulgarian art during the first half of XX century:
'as for the Bulgarian avant-garde the key word is more likely expressionism. it is a little
overstated to talk about abstraction in this period. Bulgarian intellectual in general and Bulgarian
artist are quite cautious then. as for the first half of the XX century not everything that looks
like abstraction is abstraction. For example, when we talk about sirak skitnik and when we
connect him to the visit of Marinetti in Bulgaria, this is exactly thus. although remember, that
the Futurism itself doesn’t develop and suggest abstraction, because unfortunately it is a social
orientated tendency and namely because it is ultra-vanguard, because its aim is to create a
new nature man. here it is a matter of a certain type of a social engineering, which excludes
the abstraction. and this, which looks like abstraction, purely formal shouldn’t be considered
as such. secondly, this is not only about sirak siktnik - when we talk about expressionism,
Futurism and in general about things, which are close and a kind of one family with the
abstract, have in mind that the abstraction is a pretention for going to another world, for the
world of ideas, for the spiritual. Whilst in the Futurism we have something different. even these
works of sirak skitnik look like more the rayonism in russia and the Futurism, than i would
say they are abstraction.' (7)
For the place of the abstraction in Bulgaria during the second half of the XX century svilen
stefanov writes:
'in the central european countries during the 1950s and 1960s the abstraction acquires
additional social function. informel, the geometrical abstraction and the op art are considered
14
15
not only as formal and metaphysical constructs – their social indifference is an opposition
of the socialistic realism narrative. Thus, they receive status of a contra-cultural instrument,
existing invisibly in the compositional decisions of the non-figural picture. in Bulgaria it’s not
like this at all, because the penetration of the idea of abstract art is not a conscious, but rather
an intuitive process, nevertheless it appears later – at the end of the 80s years. But not for
long – the short duration of this phenomenon is fated by the logic of the local values, which
up to this moment, in not even one period of the XX century, hasn’t allowed the existence of
an abstract tendency.' (8)
even more ultimate in his opinion is the art critic ruen ruenov, who besides the objective
political and ideological reasons for the absence of the abstract tendency in the Bulgarian art,
also notices as a specific factor for this absence the anti-intellectual and non-reflexive mentality
of the Bulgarian artist:
'We have to admit that the theory of the avant-garde as a significantly important share
of the XX century culture almost entirely absents from the existence of the Bulgarian artist
(ivan nenov was called 'hyper-cubist' and preached his own 'theory of the line', which
remained unrecorded; rare exception are the fragments of Kiril Petrov, which in their depth
are not second to Braque’s. The non-objective image is mostly intellectual project – cartesian,
futuristic, scientist, mystic or else - and only after this a picture in material. Which Bulgarian
artist had for his starting point a theory? We have several artists, who, as a result of a little
more information, intelligence or ethics, have complied with, adapted to or transformed in the
process of aspiration for the absolute, without achieving it.' (9)
May be this bitter and ultimate position is not entirely groundless, considering that in its
pure form the abstraction appears in Bulgaria for the first time at the end of the 1950s in
the apocryphal in its nature work of nikola daskalov – probably the first Bulgarian artist with
a philosophical and not artistically education, and in the 1960s the artist Kiril Petrov as if
apologizingly calls his pictorial abstractions before the art critic dimitar avramov with the
name 'theoretical pictures'.
The intellectual biography of the Bulgarian abstraction turns in a peculiar way to be
crucified on one side between the tensions of the formal and social, and on the other side
between the world of the personal and the public space. interesting episode of this biography
is the moment, when during the 1960s the artist stoyan sotirov – at this time a chairman of
the Union of the Bulgarian artists (the organization that personifies in highest level the official
state politics towards art) – meets nikola daskalov, who shows him his abstract art works.
stoyan sotirov is impressed by the pictures, which he sees, but without hesitation he gives to
daskalov the following advice: 'don’t show these, because i can’t save you'. (10) This story
illustrates clearly enough 'the impossible publicity of the abstraction in Bulgaria during the
totalitarian socialist regime. The abstract art, which during the cold War dominates in the
western art scene, is presented by the propaganda and critic in Bulgaria as an art which is:
'historically doomed', retrogressive', 'formalistic', 'detached from reality', 'ideological product
of the hostile capitalistic system'.
16

it is a peculiar fact, that in 1975 the art historian dimitar avramov publishes a monograph
for the work of Kiril Petrov, in which notions as ‘abstraction’ or ‘abstract art’ are not mentioned
anywhere. in the monograph the abstract works of Kiril Petrov from the 1960s are defined
as ’experimenting with plastic elements of the work’. These plastic experiments are showed
as a kind of stage and part of the multi planned and rich work of the artist, oriented to the
nature and life of the Bulgarian peasant. nevertheless the most dangerous ideologically, purely
abstract compositions of Kiril Petrov, in which there isn’t any formal or thematic reference to
specific object matter, are not included in the book, dimitar avramov feels obliged to note:
’… these pictures reveal many similar points to the aesthetics of such modern directions
in the painting as cubism, rayonism: in both cases the analytical creative act resolves the
impenetrable substance of the material objects and turns the composition into a dynamic
unity of interpenetrating forms, constructed into one almost autonomous structural order.
however unlike the mentioned directions, Kiril Petrov considers that these experiments have
mostly and eventually one main ’educational’ function’. (11)
in 1969, only six years before the monograph for Kiril Petrov, dimitar avramov publishes
the book ’aesthetics of the Modern art’, which influences a lot the idea for the western art

among the Bulgarian artists and critics during the following decades. it is indicative, that
in dimitar avramov’s book, the abstract paintings of Malevich and Mondrian are subject to
utmost criticism:
‘... the consecutive, brought to an end abstractionism as a final expression of the theory for
pure art, realized in practice, destroys not only the figurative image, but also the basics of the
painting itself…The idea for the ‘purity‘ had progressive meaning at its emergence …ended with
an unexampled catastrophe: with black and white squares‘. (12)
nikolay Petkov – artist and theoretician, engaged with research over the historical
development of Bulgarian painting, during the second half of the XXth century – comments
on the way, in which the ‘aesthetics‘ of avramov dominates over the interpretation of the
western art experience on the Bulgarian scene and shapes the conceptions for the modern art
in Bulgaria. according to Petkov, the point of view of avramov helps for confirmation of a wider
understanding of the realism, connected with the representation of the ‘spiritual truth about
the man‘, which can be expressed in ‘infinitely in its nuances variety‘. Petkov writes:
‘This allows, by defining the stylistic approach as ‘itself‘ empty of ideological meaning,
to legitimate the interpretation and the visual reference to imagery and plastic techniques,
developed in Western art (including in newer or dominating tendencies in the West) in Bulgarian
practice, as far as the influences ‘are localized‘ in the sphere of the means of expression without
touching ‘the artistic credo‘ and ‘attitude towards reality‘. (13)
Petkov claims that these ideas give opportunities for interpretation and referring to western
artistic tendencies in the frames of the plastic expression, which allows:
‘…since the end of the 1970s, (though rarely), in the official exhibitions begin to be allowed
apparently abstract images, as well as works, following some directions of the abstract
painting ‘refusing to break up all connections with the nature‘ (after avramov), mainly of the
lyrical abstraction and partially (during the 80s) of the plastic methods, applied in ‘the material
painting‘ of art informel‘. (14)
admission into official art exhibitions during the 1970s and 1980s of works, comprising
separate ‘abstract‘ approaches as a language and means of expression, is due to many
circumstances of the art life of the country. The art historian dimitar grozdanov defines
the 1970s as the romantic period of the socialistic art in Bulgaria and a period of creating a
situation, in which the art is declared to be almost a parallel reality. according to grozdanov:
‘…1970s create a model of organization in art, which is quite idealistic. The encouragements,
the contacts and the purchases are so many, that can’t be placed in today’s ideas for stimulating
art… The Union of Bulgarian artists becomes decisive economic unit in the state politics, having
independency with its plants, workshops, factories and stores. general, collective, international
and individual expositions are secured with budgets of union, state and regions.‘ (15)
Meanwhile the changed social position of the artist and his relative cultural independence
and financial security doesn’t abrogate his ideological role and connection to the collective
socialist understandings for individual and creative freedom. The apparent reduction of the
ideological control is expressed in individual seeking, which can’t leave the aesthetic norms

and categories, which are already defined, but allows increasingly experimenting with the
formal characteristics of the art work. despite all these there aren’t any grounds to talk about
‘association‘ of the abstraction to the official art canon, because the abstract is permitted as a
possible kind of expressiveness and ‘a plastic experiment‘, but not as a view of art.
The explicitness of the prohibitions and the quietness about the abstraction, which
dominate in the 1950s and 1960s are replaced during the next decade by a very narrowed
idea of abstraction. Thus the theoretical ‘denial‘ of the abstract art is followed by theoretical
‘disregard‘ towards the abstraction, which gradually leads to theoretical ‘exclusion‘ of the
abstraction as a fundamental category for development of modern art. in this connection a
very precise analysis of the period for the development of the Bulgarian art makes the art
historian Boris danailov:
‘in the 1970s an iconology of the existence of art is built, which is very peculiar. on
the one hand, the main ideological norms remain, and on the other – certain positions are
defended which, in their broadness in terms of building a visual image, seem to undermine
exactly this normative base. The peculiarities of this controversial lifestyle lead to changing old
mythologemes and devising new ones, trying to arrange and fill these situations with logical
plausibility. The protection of diversity as a fundamental core value of the 1970s substitutes the
militant intolerance to ‘the foreign‘ with the idea of ‘superiority.‘ as a result of the changes in this
period Bulgarian art captures and encloses its own perimeter, protecting the numerous forms
of personal expression, and builds up its own system of values. it has its specific conquests
and peaks, but moving in rhythm and solving problems other than the ongoing global trends
going in parallel.‘ (16)
The displacement of the abstraction of the zone of a political conflict decreases the interest
to its purest forms. By weakening the negative weight of the abstraction, weakens its role as a
cultural location, capable to generate forbidden meanings as well. The cliche, which gradually
imposes about the interpretation of the abstraction is, that it is obsolete and overcome period
of the development of the art.
Meanwhile during this period there is big number of artists and art practices, which develop
themselves on the boarder of one or another aspect of the abstract. it is well enough to be
mentioned authors as dechko Uzunov and Petar dochev, in whoose works the interaction
between the figurative and the abstraction keeps for many years original balance and specific
enigmatic quality.
it is hard to figure out which is the strongest reason, that withholds and obstructs the
development of the abstraction in Bulgarian art during the 1970s and the 1980s. Whether the
action of the ideological restrictions and prohibitions or the idea for the abstraction, which is
formed and affirmed by the Bulgarian theoreticians and artists.
in this direction are outlined two very strong lines of pressure, which additionally influence
the attitude towards the abstraction. The first line of pressure derives from the cross point
of the abstraction with decorative arts, and the other one is connected to the development
of the sculpture, which after the end of the 1950s on the international scene is the most

dynamic changing art media with a contribution to the development of the abstraction, but
unfortunately in Bulgaria during this period the sculpture stays centered on the figure only.
decorative arts pass through their dynamic differentiation and emancipation during the
60s 70s and 80s years as they enjoy significantly weaker ideological control and restrictions.
Many painters and sculptures feel more freely to experiment with the abstract in the field
of decorative art. Meanwhile the invasion of the modern abstract aesthetics through the
decorative arts and their 'easel tendency' also to the decorativeness as an immutable problem
in the heart of the pure abstraction.
We shouldn’t forget that almost from its beginning the abstract painting is criticized, that it
represents a simple decoration. accusation, which the abstract art tries to overcome by looking
for additional psychological and philosophical rhetoric and avoids any opportunity to become
a decoration.
a kind of alliance of the abstraction with decorative arts can be found in multilateral artists
like ivan nenov and ivan Kirkov, who experiment with abstract elements simultaneously in
different kinds of arts. Meanwhile in the 1960s and the 1970s in the decorative work of textile
artists as Mara Yosifova, dimitar stankov, Marin Varbanov, Vladimir ovtcharov and dimitar
Balev enter compositional models, which originate from the modern abstract painting and
sculpture.
We must note that in the work of many painters during the 1970s and the 1980s presents
strongly expressed abstract tendency. We can find different kinds of interaction, relationships
and attitudes, connected with the abstract in the paintings of Vera nedkova, Vesa Vassileva,

29
Parushev, but with a few exceptions we can hardly define most of these authors as abstract
artists.
Most of the Bulgarian authors, who in their paintings rely on the experience of the abstract
art, use approaches which are characterized with a high level of eclecticism, as well as with
a lack of a clear explicitness and consistency. This gives grounds to some theoreticians to
comment the existence of the abstraction in Bulgarian art as an unconscious phenomenon. The
art historian svilen stefanov formulates this peculiarity as a phenomenon of 'the unresolved
abstract' and notes, that:
'… this abstraction has never happened for real – it is mixed with expressionistic tinge…
sometimes folklore, lyric and… with figurative allusions, or stated as non-figurative 'informal'
diversity, based on reduction of the forms and increasing of the significance of the material
surface of the painting.' (17)
The absence of radical reductionist and 'self-reflexive' practices and approaches towards
the abstract until the middle of the 1990s seems to prove the thesis of stefanov. The contra-
dictory attitude towards the abstract art in its interpretation and evaluation are very clearly vis-
ible in the critical reactions to the organized in 1994 by the Union of the Bulgarian artists large
exhibition, titled 'orientations in abstraction'. This is the first collective exhibition, which tries
to put to open dispute the question about the abstract in Bulgarian art. When nikolay Petkov
analyzes the debate about the exhibition, he affirms, that the understanding and the attitude
towards the abstract art of many authors and influential art critics of different generations, re-
produces views and positions from the 'aesthetics' of dimitar avramov, in which “the modern

art' is considered to be with 'exhausted' abilities for development 'around the 30s', and the
abstract seems to be stopped 'in a dead point' – a comprehension, which Petkov defines as
an 'optical illusion', marking more likely 'the position and the moment, in which for a very long
time the Bulgarian history of art stops at a 'dead point' the absorption and the development
of relevant for the abstract art in the second half of the XX century theoretical approaches'.
With regard to the critical text of the art historian elena Popova, published on the occasion of
the exhibition 'orientations in the abstraction' during the same year in 'Kultura' (newspaper),
Petkov writes:
'in the work of dimitar avramov, as well in the text of elena Popova, a very important role
plays defining the abstract as 'abstractionism', whilst in the significant texts, interpreting the
theory and history of the art during XX century, the names, indicating this phenomenon, are
'abstract art' and 'abstraction', which testifies for its understanding not so much as a historical
style, relatively homogeneous in the common features of the visual parameters of the works
and of the ideology of its own 'postulates', but rather as a genre, dynamically developing since
the second decade of the century in different art movements and approaches'. (18)

disclosure of every new contents niche, is the way, in which during the 1960s the genre of
the cosmic landscape begins to be perceived as abstraction. in this sense as an example can
be given the cosmic drawings of Vasil ivanov and his forbidden exhibition in sofia in 1964.
during the following decade a similar situation will be repeated about the ‘pariorealism‘ of hristo
simeonov and his painting, perceived as abstraction, shown in his solo exhibition in 1978. an
exhibition, about which the legendary Bulgarian futurist and theoretician Kiril Krastev, will write,
that it is ‘the most unexpected and surprising exhibition ever done by a Bulgarian artist‘. (20)
it is interesting that despite of similar expectations and attitudes the most radical and
consequent statement of the abstraction in the Bulgarian art happens not through the image
(for example the reductions of the figure or the imagination of new worlds), but through the
choice of the material as a border with inexhaustible potential. The real eruption of the abstract
happens in the middle and in the end of the 1990s – a roaring decade of transformations and
political transition to a new democratic system of state government, which is accompanied
by a strong invasion of conceptual and post-conceptual strategies in the Bulgarian art. The
powerful rediscovery of the abstraction’s power is realized by the substantial characteristics of
the matter. The critics, which during this time are engaged mainly to welcome the ‘new‘ (for
Bulgaria) forms of Performance art, installation art and Video art, are inclined to look to the
interest for the spiritual dimensions and the art informel, and the monochrome with a certain
disregard, interpreting them as a final phase of a long process of ‘cleaning‘ the multilateral
plastic language, which has developed during the last years of the totalitarian period.
dramatization of the abstraction through the materiality of the sand, clay, soil, asphalt,
graphite, ash, rust and wax, together with the metaphysics and the achromatic can be
interpreted also as a specific quittance to the ‘appropriation‘ and ‘materialization‘ of the
abstraction by the decorative arts during the previous decades.
early interest to the art informel comprise separate works of grigor Boyadjiev-Boyadjana,
dimitar grozdanov and nikola nikolov during the 1970s and the 1980s, but the consistent
and decisive imposing of this abstract tendency in the Bulgarian art is done with series of solo
and group exhibitions during the last decade of the XX century. in this connection there have
to be noted the exhibitions: ‘sand spaces‘ of Milko Pavlov in 1994 in sapio gallery, the solo
exhibition of Boris serginov in 1996 in Vitosha gallery and the exhibition ‘ashes, graphite, rust‘
of Petar dochev, stanislav Pamukchiev and Kolio Karamfilov in 1996 in ata art center. The big
collective exhibitions ‘informal\informel‘ with curators dimitar grozdanov and Boris clementiev
in 2001 in ‘rayko aleksiev‘ gallery, as well as the organized by stanislav Pamukchiev exhibition
‘ahroma‘, during 2002 in the gallery of the Union of the Bulgarian artists, ‘shipka 6‘, affirm
the presentation of this abstract tendency as a completed phenomenon in the Bulgarian art.
according to the american art historian Pepe Karmel the most useful way to be understood
the abstraction isn’t from the point of view of its formal evolution, but from the point of view of
its thematic contents. carmel considers that the abstract art can be put in six main categories.
Three categories, referring to the nature: cosmologies, landscapes and anatomy. and three
categories, which are culture’s answers: decorative models, architecture and signs. (21) When

we use this methodology in a Bulgarian context, we’ll find out, that the painting abstraction
in Bulgaria seems to be more dependent in a contents plan by the nature categories, while
the sculpture abstraction refers more to the experimenting with different architecture and sign
structures. in this sense indicative example are the appearance of the abstract in the sculpture
work of authors as angel stanev, emil Popov, ivan rusev and Konstantin denev.

‘But what is new in the ‘new abstraction‘, different from the historical one, which in Bul-
garia, at least for me, is with the pretentions of gorgon Medusa… it is not an end of the art
history, but is part of its second history – by the space of the new media as its basic. Mean-
while it realizes that its biggest quality is the relativeness of the nonobjective, the visualization
of ideas, which exist in the consciousness. in entirely definite plan, it is a ‘good visualization‘
in meditation, which fills our mind with ‘good images‘, specifically today – in the epoch of the
global being of the universal flood of every kind of images. and meanwhile it looks at itself as
a game, but significantly precise game of glass pearls, which defines itself by quality. having
in mind the big responsibility to create objectless theatre of existing ideas, the modern abstrac-
tion has ethic motivation in human plan. in a precisely definite sense the real abstract artists
are monks – they see, imagine and generate images, which very few people reach. This is the
essence; this is the guarantee for value.‘ (22)
The primordial ‘non-translation‘ character of the abstraction is not only a critic to the
existing languages, but also a faith – with the whole depth of the doubt – for existing of a
more perfect language. The freedom to representation shouldn’t be thought as an escape
from the world, because the art of abstraction is art of the pure mentality. This is why the
modern abstraction increasingly realizes, that it can’t save itself of the existing forms of a
cultural codification by following only the way of the intellectual reduction. after the lessons
of the Pop art, Minimalism and conceptual art, the new abstraction, called as well Post-
abstract abstraction or neo-geo (i.e. new geometry), begins according to the words of eugene
schwartz “to use figurative and other kinds of images, detached from their initial meaning and
embedded in extremely deep, complex and irrational space‘. (23) in 1991 this tendency will
receive the name ‘conceptual abstraction‘ (24) and in 2009 it’ll be launched under the name
‘ambiguous abstraction‘. (25)
The end of the XX century in Bulgaria is characterized with antagonistic tension between
the conceptual strategies, focused on the dynamics of the innovative forms and the abstraction,
which defends the elitism of the classical means of expression. gradually during the first
decade of the XXi century this situation changes with the appearance of many original art
projects, which combine these two opposite tendencies. artists like iiyan lalev, stoyan Kutsev,
nikolay Petkov, nikolay naydenov, simeon stoilov, samuil stoyanov and stanimir genov use
the apparent detachment and clarity of the abstraction as a phenomenon, capable to activate
mechanisms of mutually excluding themselves statements and interpretations.
in conceptual abstraction colours can be read either as pure colours and forms, or as literal
notions and objects from the everyday life, but the existing distance between the two kinds
of reading makes impossible their simultaneous accepting as united objects or notions. Thus,
actually the conceptual abstraction confronts us with works, which doesn’t reduce the reality
and doesn’t create new reality, but rather creates create new kind of communicative space of
internally separated ideas and perceptions.
The autonomy of the abstraction, understood as a place for a direct and intensive asser-
tion of the internal space, is replaced by depersonalized approaches and preferences. involving

monochrome and readymade in the strategy of the conceptual abstraction finds new potentials
of indistinguishability between the serious and ironical, as well as between the generic and
specific. Thus, the figures of the thought turn themselves into a subject matter, and the formal
characteristics of the work simultaneously try and crypt every possible status of the audience.
Besides interest to the conceptual abstraction the first decade of the XXi century shows a
very strong interest to the abstract in direction to the post minimalistic abstraction, self-reflexive
painting and concrete art. in this connection we should mark the names of Maria chakarova,
lora Parmakova and georgi dimitrov. in 2010 georgi dimitrov establishes the platform 'non-
objective sofia', which in 2012 is registered as the first of its kind organization with the aim
to offer institutional support for the development of the non-objective art in Bulgaria, to make
popular the aesthetics of the non-objective art in Bulgarian social context, as well as to put
Bulgaria on the world map of the non-objective art.
at the end of the first decade of the XXi century two interesting curatorial projects try
to dispute the abstraction in its institutional borders. in 2009 in sofia city art gallery the
curator Maria Vassileva presents her project 'illusions For the Mind and the eyes. Between the
hyperrealism and abstraction'. The exhibition includes a number of Bulgarian authors with
works from the gallery’s fund, united by two opposite at first sight views – on one side the
hyperrealism with its obsession with the objecthood, and on the other, the abstraction with its
maximum distance from the objects and subjects in the visible world. The result is extremely
interesting as a confirmation of that, how in the Bulgarian context more art methods sacrifice
their extremeness and sharpness, irresistibly attracted by different poetical causes. in the
curatorial text for the exhibition, Maria Vassileva writes:

‘The tracking of two historical styles on the principle of the contrast gives opportunity for
a categorically formulating the differences. Facing each other ‘eyes to eyes‘, they clearly show
two directions of the thought. one follows objectifying of reality, gazing in people and objects,
as if torn out of the concrete place and historical time. The other tears the connections with the
familiar and builds parallel reality. in this diametrical matter however, are lined some similarities
as well. More of the abstract artists start from the knowledge for a known for a certain object
in the surrounding world and develop their art in direction to its own independent aesthetical
unity. The representatives of the hyperrealism can reach strange energy- the effect of attention
to the detail, paradoxically creates strong feeling for unreality. Thus the two styles give ground
for illusory walks in a different world.‘ (26)
in 2010 nikolay Petkov and the young artists Zornitsa halacheva, stanislava Markova,
elena Kaludova and Zoran georgiev participate in Peter Tzanev’s curatorial project ‘Painting
Machines: antagonisms of The abstract Production‘. (27) The project contains ‘biomechani-
cal negation‘ and literal prohibition for including the hand of the artist as a mean and part of
the painting abstraction (the curator has asked the artists not to use any form of painting with
hands or using of painting instruments). The project tries to find the sense of the abstraction
not as a renewed repression over the language or visual, but by opposition between the body
and hand, which, reduced to the status of progressive machines, manufacture the painting trail
nowadays. The final result turns out to be surprising for the author of the project and for the
participants in it as well. The derived works show how the idea for freedom turns the mecha-
nism of the body into a center, to which all technologies return.
it is hardy possible to make conclusion of a story, which is without a clear start, without
its own unequivocal culmination and without predictable final. at the end there are grounds
to claim that the abstraction has never been part of the official history of art, as well as that
it has never been thought as alternative center of this history. in the same time it is not late
the idea for the abstract to become catalyst of all unassigned questions for the Bulgarian art,
which are yet to come.

in the complex process of its development and self-defining, Bulgarian culture has always
existed in the contradictory dynamics between assimilating somebody else’s experience and
preserving of the acknowledged as its unique own.
in our lands, due to the peculiar historical and spiritual development, time passes in a
different way. We live with the trauma for something, which didn’t happen, but also with the
expectation of something, which is coming.
When the West excitedly radiated the emissions of the modernism, its energies flooded
and fertilized the unploughed stubbled-fields of our young culture after the liberation. later,
when the explosions of the abstract expressionism and the paradox ‘iconology‘ of Pop art
dominated in the world, we spelled the soviet primer books. When the West exercised its
clever rhetoric for ‘end of the history‘, ‘end of the ideologies‘ (hegel, Fukuyama), ‘end of art‘
(hegel, danto, Belting), we began to build our new historical time, with new illusions and
hopes – i.e. we started to fulfill the ‘end‘.
‘Bulgarian Transformism‘, as it was called by Pierre restany (1996, jury of the international
Painting Triennial, sofia), in its contradictory movement, has always turned its face to the West
up to now, to those models, beginning to give the actual order in art’s world. This, which comes
from outside as an ‘obligatory‘ example from the world platform, shape the unstable ideas for
art in the cultural peripheries. in these specific cultural topology, the created production is
often in half and hybrid, unrealized and unarticulated. here we don’t have to belittle the efforts
and the high result of bright talents, with their unique, personal breach and presence.
The tension in the relation ‘here‘ and ‘there‘, in the relativeness and non-relativeness ac-
cording ‘there‘, seeks the lines, the visibility and the value of a specific, local cultural move. The
abstract art, the adapting of its plastic and spiritual discoveries, in our sociocultural context,
evidence in a particularly expressive way the cultural relations between center and periphery.
When the theoreticians of the abstract art talk about the autonomous expressive abilities of the
color, line, shape, structure- brought to their internal aim and contents – Kiril Petrov in staliyska
mahala village, near the city of lom – in a solitude and internal concentration shall write down
in his pad ‘Practices‘: ‘The question what is entirely comprised in the question ‘how‘. in 1913
Malevich drew with a pencil black square, 1973 robert Mangold drew series of circles in a
square. Thirty years later, Petar dochev excavated his series of circles in black graphite and at
the end he covered them with gold leafs as an orthodox icon. in this comparison we find the
strange fate of the Bulgarian modern art, of the specific evolution in the understanding of an
abstract – the plastic idiom in a different cultural tradition and social-political climate.

defining and lining the boarders of this art is theoretically unfinished conversation and the
positions are hesitated from exaltation to deny, even putting under question, whether the
project for the abstraction ever happened in our practice. This critical position finds its grounds
in absence of collective platforms, declared programs, lined spiritual horizon, theoretical
reasoned artistic behavior.
The emerge of the abstract art in our socio-cultural context has its own different historical
and spiritual trajectory. it is often born in hybrid forms, modeled on one side in the spiritual
dimensions of the inherited cultural tradition, and on the other side in the restricted frames
of ideological normative aesthetic register. The question is not so much for the external
repressiveness, but for closed aesthetic horizon, restricting the imagination, disinformation,
auto censorship and the traps of the local conjunctures. The attempts for abstract art during
the socialism often happen unconscious and in the closed spaces of the personal formal
experiments. in the official professional conversation from this time, the abstraction is synonym
of the stigmatized formalism of the ‘waste western culture‘.
in the common process of ‘liberation‘ in Bulgarian art, which began from the end of the 50s
and the begging of the 60s years, language forms of the abstract art are being assimilated on
formal level and are included in the construction of widened convention for a figural painting
(as example – Plovdiv artists). remainder figurativeness serves as exculpatory argument for
abstract passions. ‘semi-abstraction‘ is characteristic and widely applied artistic behavior. in
this period many authors who experimented on the border between figurative and abstract,
had created their own unique plastic and poetic worlds.

since the end of the 60s years, in the official professional rhetoric are introduced the terms
‘plastic‘, ‘plasticity‘, ‘plastic art‘, which in a big level express the new quality characteristic
of Bulgarian art. The plastic becomes main category and its assimilation gives push to the
subjectivation and abstracted reading of the reality and the concepts for art. accumulation of
creative score in this area, brought out logically the abstract-plastic idiom as liberated freedom
and unlocked huge creative energy. The term ‘plastic art‘, on work and theoretical level, replaced
“visual art”, with which it moved the accent from representation of the visible reality, to the
value of subjective expression and the purity of the emotional-psychic and spiritual suggestion.
Thus the Bulgarian art walked its second, peculiar modern walk in order to bring out as a main
quality of the (60s, 70s, 80s years) officially proclaimed ‘creative variety‘ of artistic worlds and
individual handwritings.
art history from this time can be understood as evolution in the understanding and
assimilation of the plastic idiom. Prove for this specific characteristic are the international
triennials for realistic painting and competitions for young artists in sofia. in this process of
development, in the years of the socialism, somewhere in the end, borders, marginal spaces,
appear intuitively and unconscious attempts for abstract art. The aesthetical intuitions, cultural
reflections and inspirations, social and idea motivations, tradition and cultural memory influence
in the emerge and development of Bulgarian art can be searched and tracked.
Basically, the motivations for entry and experimentation with abstract articulations, can be
united in several basic lines:
– development of the ideas for freedom and personal breakthrough in art itself, free of
commitment to a plot, theme and external descriptiveness of the image plasticity, of pure
relationships and understanding of abstract art as an independent absolute value (by Kant’s
definition for the wonderful as that we like without the notion of objective);
– social-political reaction against freedom, escape from the political dependency, from the
norm of the ideological, incorporation to the moving liberal values of the West, concealed dis-
sident exaltation, often paid with the price of chosen self-isolation;
– spiritual openness – searched expression of the pure spiritual denaturalization of the world,
penetration in the enigmatic closed zones of the metaphysical, universal categories and absolut.
in the socialism, experimenting with conditional color and shape, with extremely abstracted
contents, it was expression of freedom, escape from the banal stories of fake, camouflage
historical optimism, escape from the coerciveness of the social-political relativeness. The
idea for the abstract emerges as a peculiar experimental field for personal strategies, out of
the markers of the official narratives. an expression for intuitive or half-conscious attempt for
personal and artistic self-defining has been sought.
in this process the contents of the cultural heritage with prehistorically and folklore
character and decorative element, medieval religious painting, productively interlace with the
conditional plastic language and spiritual contents of the abstract art. With the hired from
the icon conditional shape and color, flat picture bottom and reverse perspective, as if the
Bulgarian abstraction easily overcomes the illusory three-dimensional space of ‘mimetic‘

онова, което ни се харесва без представата за цел);
цената на избрана самоизолация;

painting. symbolic-semantically and formal-plastic references of the tradition define one of
the specific, productive lines with authentic plastic active and spiritual meaningful value.
in these developments have been caught tide of energy to the cyclic repeated impulses for
identification. Formal discoveries, experiments with non-conventional materials and their
conceptual awareness, created specific informal version, ‘arte povera‘ and ‘material painting‘,
saturated with their own meaning.
conditions for new articulating of the painting and the picture, (the 90s years), have
motivated actual searches for new language shapes and conceptual approaches for penetrating
in the aesthetic, psychological and spiritual universalities. it has activated a process in the
practice, of awareness, that abstract art has its own independent, untied value, that it creates
its own pure reality and generates by the ‘internal necessity‘ (Kandinsky), that art is one of the
meanings, through which someone ‘acquires reality‘ (Konrad Fiedler).
on working level rise and rethink ‘the three mystical necessities‘ formulated by Kandinsky
in creating abstract images: an element of personality – an expression of the inner self; element
of style – an expression of the properties of the era; element of the pure and eternal art – an
expression of what is generally inherently art.
in the last twenty years the plastic tradition found development, new vitality with
rethinking and reformulation of picture, expanding the boundaries of its specific existence,
conceptualisation of formal and meaningful relationships in its new structural determination.
There was neo- abstract and neo- minimalistic painting and sculpture, plastic installation with
new interpretations of the phenomenological and universal. Widespread experimentation with
unconventional materials was a natural way out of a different from the previous regime of
making painting and sculpture – a logical continuation and qualitative leap in the search for
author identification in modern times.
in the development of the ideas of abstract art in Bulgarian art, the articulation of the
phenomenological, subconscious, gestures expressive, receives precedence over the other
direction – of rationalism and logic control. aesthetics founded by John dewey argued that ‘art
is an experience arising from the experience of living. This experience is built on stereotypical
reactions, biological impulses rooted in the subconscious realms.‘
Pragmatism as philosophy and aesthetic, brings out theoretically the pure intuitive,
biologically attitude to art. These characteristics refer to the serious psychological, existential
– philosophical and socio – political analysis of the prevailing energies in Bulgarian abstract
art. here emerge central categories of Jung’s theory of the role of ‘creative impulses‘ and
anthropology of herbert reed with an analysis of the three types of consciousness: ‘i –
conscious‘; ‘super – i‘ – the act of introspection, conscience, ideals; ‘it‘ – the dark, inaccessible
part of the psyche, the source of energy, irrationality, a mysterious force, a source of inspiration.
Theoretically, it is assumed that in the deeper layers of the unconscious exists and functions
shaping principle of another kind of image – non-suggestive, with indeterminate form, which
comes from the deeper layers of the unconscious, not accompanied by immediate, conscious
associations of external, knowable world (by herbert reed).

Much of Bulgarian artists, with their inherited intuition for naturalness, nature and
authenticity, hardly dispose of empathy in human, natural, organic. an affinity for empathy is
‘attitude of pantheistic trust between man and the outside world.‘ (Worringer). such mental
and spiritual energies, determine prevailing articulations of biomorphic and anthropomorphic
intuitively felt contents. This explains partially the absence of explicit rational and theoretical
constructs and relatively little experiences in the direction of geometric and minimalist
abstraction.
after the pathos of the expanding boundaries of painting and sculpture, after proof of
vitality in this area at the intersections between the plastic and conceptual, naturally occurred
development of new problems and production, which comments with postmodern and
hypermodern mistrust and ironic version of high modernism and abstractionism. There were
created conceptual works that intellectually speculate on the topic of the abstract, but also are
testimony to the process of realization of this art, its new life and character – cultural value in
contemporary socio-cultural context.
The exhibition ‘The Untold abstraction‘ and the book-catalogue direct the look to the
genealogy of the abstract art in Bulgaria. They show the efforts of strange loners, experimented
on the border between the permitted and forbidden during the socialism, to the specific of
their discoveries and the quality of the creative result. They follow the development of the
ideas of abstractionism in the dynamic of overcoming the conventions, inherited from the past.
They tour the expanding boundaries in the understanding for painting and sculpture from the
last 20 years, the process of conceptualization and new articulating of abstraction’s high text.

CONCEPT Of THE ExHiBiTiON
THE UNTOLD ABSTrACTiON
Thematic Lines and Points of intersection of the Abstract in the
Bulgarian fine Arts from the Late 1950s till Nowadays
curators:
stanislav Pamukchiev and Peter Tzanev
‘The Untold abstraction‘ is an endeavour to trace the ways, in which concepts of the ab-
stract grow into their tangible embodiment within the realm of Bulgarian fine arts. The exhibi-
tion is a look on art consciousness and experience in forms that do not draw direct analogies
to (nor contain correlations with) the art space firmly set in the frame of officialised historical
tales of totalitarianism and the following transition period. it is – ‘yet untold‘ in the sense of
being unanalysed to death theoretically, free-floating historically, unappraised critically and not
occupying its rightful place within the aesthetic communication.
‘The Untold abstraction‘ is a project dedicated to a peculiar trajectory in Bulgarian art,
which defies all terms inherent to the monopolistic history of novel forms and innovation per
se. The exhibition studies the autonomous position of abstraction as a visual strategy and an
aesthetic category and spans across generations of Bulgarian artists who demonstrate imma-
nent interest in the radical experiencing of form and the borderline approaches to organizing
the sensorial, thus rendering it absolute and, ultimately, overcoming it.
While it does not pretend to be exhaustive, the selection focuses on problematic areas
charged with tension and critical rhetoric. The exhibition follows the chronological develop-
ment from the late 1950s up to present day and aims to unveil the universal thematic catego-
ries of fundamental significance for the development of abstract art:
i. Abstract cosmologies – a thematic category where the abstract is a medium used to
grasp the infinite essence of nature, the Universe, the absolute;
ii. Abstraction of empty structures and spaces – a thematic sphere of extreme reduction-
ism, work within the realm of ‘emptiness’ and ‘void’, with the ideas of nothing and intuitions of
the absent;
iii. Organic abstraction – a category, which objectivity and distinct sensorial plasticity trig-
ger and bolster the viability of the tangible/substantial in the sphere of painting and sculpture,
thus presenting a counterpoint to the virtual;
iV. Anthropological abstraction – a category, which treats the invisible anatomy of the
subject in absentia, the other-worldly traits of the ideal anthropos, the archetypal and atavistic
shadows;

V. Conceptual abstraction – pulls together conceptual and polymorphic situations domi-
nated by thought allegories and by the intricate postmodern discrepancy of cultural symbols;
Vi. Technological abstraction – embodies the triumph of the inorganic, reality ‘annulled’,
the futuristic cleansing of consciousness and imagination, anti-psychologism, the geometry of
utopias and alienation.
These thematic lines are somewhat blurred to the viewer’s eye; in the majority of authors’
strategies, they are tangled in a complex syncretic multidimensionality of subtle connotations
and aesthetic implications.
‘The Untold abstraction‘ takes a careful look at the peculiar destiny of Bulgarian fine art, at
its birth and realization as a complex relation to the grand tale of abstraction, at its motivation,
positioning and identification within the ‘local tradition vs. global cultural experience’ context.
one is able to trace the aesthetic hunches, cultural reflections and linguistic inspirations and
their embodiment into authentic substance.
The exhibition presents authors who boldly place their innate emphasis on distinct tenden-
cies; at that, they have steadfastly joined, by force of reasoning or sheer intuition, their creative
destiny with the credo of abstraction as the experimental field of the solitary individuals striv-
ing to escape from the ravaging symbols of collective identity.
66
iV.
архетипните и атавистични сенки;
контексти;
Vi.

(1932–2010)
if we need to explain in some way the diverse style of Kirkov,
we should consider the fact that he works in many other genres
of art – monumental, scenography, poster and illustration. This
practice teaches him of qualities that a 'pure' painter can not
develop. naturally, when he creates paintings in his subconscious,
in his habit, these factors continue to work – requirements for
brevity, decorative attractiveness, according to the decision of
the theme, communication, symbolism in the expression of the
idea. This gives his easel paintings that semantic organization,
which is characteristic for other more decorative genres.

The artist understands fully the need to oppose the landscape
to its rituals and chimeras, linking the delicate figurative (present

wide range: from cubism to lyricism). The impulse carried by
stoyan Tsanev’s creativity is constantly renewed by this internal
and underground movement, passing from the base to the top,
in lines, shapes and colors that makes the reality fly to 'deaf' or
in light flashes. (Joseph Paul schneider)

For a long time and consistently rumen Jekov moves towards
an enlightened laconism and the connection with the real
impulse becomes more fragile and elusive. Visual gestures of
rumen Jekov resonate in our souls because they are organic,
spontaneous and immediate, and his plastic culture, accumulated
over the years, makes any movement of the arm capable of
unlocking grace and harmony. These purely artistic attitudes are
typical for the generation – perhaps the last one, over which
extends the influence of classical european modernism. But
these gestures of rumen Jekov are personally motivated by his
own psychological nature. his works are musical and lyrical. and
in recent years, touching children’s world, feeds him with new
patterns. as in the children’s drawings, the line often hovers on

in the paintings of stoyan Kutsev after 2000, increasingly in
the plastic and semantic structure, are weaved numbers, letters,
numbers, bar codes, signatures, marks of a date or time – signs
of rationalism, pragmatism and digitalization. These markings,
imposed on the abstract canvas of the picture, displaced its high
transcendent horizon, and pushed it closer to the banality and
concreteness of today. so the pictures are rather 'inventoried'
exhibits, witnesses of something we vaguely remember,
something lost its initial meaning and depersonalized.

analysis of Krassimir roussev’s painting is based on three
concepts – abstraction, expression and plasticity... due to the
specific nature of color and textures, these concepts lead us,
mainly emotionally to some prehistoric layers, to the roots of
what is very difficult to describe in words, but can be felt, sensed
through ancestral memory. (Maria Vasileva)

Before acquiring the tangibility of painting flesh, these paintings
have been worn and experienced as a thrill and excitement, as an
emotional and spiritual movement. Painting achievement is with
a liberated intuition and self-control in a process, in which the
movement of the plastic modules, color intensity and its mastering,
painting and tonal oscillation, are projection of cultivated/
uncultivated reaction – experience. (stanislav Pamukchiev)
The mind seeks and gives explanations, but the driving force
of life as a whole is far more than mind... Many times lightly
and confidently i say: 'art does not make sense.' drilling in the
sense eliminates sensitivity. Meaning is measurable, and art is
limitless. (lyuben genov)

it is subjectively perceived. While employing some of the most
simple forms or excluding form at all, in favour of the autonomous
role of colour, i reach a certain level of impact. By cooling high
emotional experiences or feelings and transforming them into
a rational pictorial language i come to a kind of synthesis.
By using the square format i achieve a level of concentration
which corresponds to the geometric accuracy of the shape.
