Ser vs.

Estar
Raymond Alejandro Rojas Peralta

Subject: Intro to Spanish Lesson Overview: At this point in the course, students are already
familiar, with the verb “Ser”, as well as greetings, numbers, and the
Grade: 9 verbs gustar/encantar. The lesson will focus on the main differences
between the verbs Ser vs Estar which are a couple of the most used
verbs in the Spanish language. Another reason as to why I am
focusing on these verbs is the fact that this pair of verbs can be
particularly tricky for those who speak English as their first
language, because they are both encompassed by the verb “to be”.
Time: 65 minutes

Big Idea:
- With basic language skills, we can communicate with others.
- Listening and viewing with intent supports our understanding and acquisition of a new
language.
Objectives: SWBATs [aim for a maximum of 3 content, and relevant others specific to each
category
- Students will learn to utilize ser and estar in their respective contexts.
- Students will be exposed to a wide variety of vocabulary that will enhance their language
acquisition.

- PowerPoint Presentation
- YouTube video about the uses of Ser and Estar
- Compare and contrast hand out – for note taking purposes.

Assessment Plan:
- Most of today’s assessment will be done as the activities unfold in the classroom. Most of
the assessments will be comprehension checks. This is to ensure that the main ideas are
getting across. Some of the possible assessments could be:
● Observation during activities.

● Completion of the worksheets.

● Participation

Lesson Components
Hook Activity (12 - 13 minutes)
- Introduction:
- Prior to beginning class I will introduce myself briefly. I will also ask the students to
create makeshift name tags, in order for me to know how to address them (5 minutes)
- Brain storming – activitating background information
- In order to introduce today’s class we will first review the verb “ser” which was
previously taught in class. They will do this by brainstorming the conjugation of the verb,
and by working through some sample questions. These sample questions will be corrected
orally in front of the class. (7 – 8 minutes)
Development (47 minutes)
● Main Activity

● Having introduced the topic for today’s lesson, the class is going to proceed to
learn how to conjugate “estar”, and then will work through some simple sample
questions. After finishing with Estar, students will be given the compare and
contrast handout in order to being our analysis of both verbs. We will work
through the different uses in a powerpoint presentation. The students will be
required to fill out their handout with the information provided. (25 minutes)
● Video Intermission

● The students will view a video that explains the usage of this verbs in a more
visual manner. The video also proposes certain scenarios, where the students need
to figure out which verb to use. (7 minutes)
● Worksheet

● The students will have to fill out a worksheet, that seeks to reinforce what was
learned during the lesson. The worksheet will consist of excercises where both
verbs are mixed together. By mixing both verbs, students will have to figure out
the appropriate context for each verb. This is a great way to test what they learned
during the lesson. Some of the excercises will be taken up in class. (15 minutes)
Closing ( 5 minutes):
- Self reflection time: prior to leaving the class, the students will have to write a quick
reflection of what they learned in the lesson. This reflection could also include the
questions they may still have about the topic, or new questions that arose during this
particular lesson. They are also welcome to write about the aspects of the class that they
thought were helpful to them, as well as those that were not very helpful. ( 5 minutes)
